Sander Berge

I don't get why fans are so angry and surprised by Wilder's quotes. When we were linked with Berge, many thought he was beyond our reach. He'd previously been linked with Spurs and Man United, after all. He was signed when the club appeared to be in the ascendency, unfortunately this didn't last. He's at an age where he'll want to prove he's an elite level player and we won't want such a large proportion of resources tied up in one player.

He'll move on when we go down, but I wish him ever success and hope he goes on to play at the very highest level. Despite what others have said, he's been nothing but professional since he signed. Just hasn't quite worked out how we hoped.

After his serious injury, surely he has to play several games before anyone will pay top price for him.
I know that detailed medical will take place but they don’t show how he has recovered for matches.

I don't know if you listen to Bladespod, but in their 1/4 season review, interestingly both Beans and Roygbiv gave Sander player of the season so far. At that time I though he was the obvious standout. A couple of neutrals I'm friends with also said that Berge looked at standout, in a poor team.

I think we've seen some much better team performances since then, but he started the season well, I think he suits RM better than dm. But what what I would say in both Berge and Norwood's defence, is that playing as a deep lying playmaker is much harder this season, as our movement is nowhere near what we've seen before. JOC plays a big part in that, he's consistently shown for the ball.

That's as may be, but every single win this season has been without Berge in the team. He might be the 'best player' but he's not the best for this team.

Berge is the only player to get worse whilst not in the team!

I completely disagree. His reputation seems to have grown since he's been injured, proving nothing except the fallibility of memory as far as I'm concerned.

There's been nothing about any of his performances that have ever been more than beige. You wouldn't have looked at him and thought he's out of his depth, like so many of our signings have been.

The idea, though, that he could play for one of the top six in England or Spain is risible.

He was also way ahead on the player ratings on here

I do listen, and I do remember that. I also remember them telling us all not to overreact after our poor start. I think it's fair to say their view of our players was rosier at the time than the reality.

He's not suited to us at all. Put him in a team who dominate the ball and he will look a far better player. He's come into a truly dreadful side and struggled. People talk about Lingaard after his performance yesterday but does anybody think we'd give him the opportunity to perform like he did yesterday? He'd have been stifled and very soon his confidence levels would mean he'd be unable to impact a game.

Reading those comments from Wilder Berge is as good as gone. What an absolutely awful state we have ended up in.

Best chance we have ever had to establish ourselves in the prem and we have totally self combusted. We didn't even get to celebrate in person our best season in 40 odd years. Feel sick to the stomach about how the dream has turned into a nightmare.

hes definetly going to go but i would put a minimum 25m for him and see if theres any takers

The stepping stone comment from Wilder is a fkin disgrace. I hoped we’d left the tinpot mentality behind when McCabe went. It seems not. Welcome back to the wilderness years.

Why are people angry? Of course we're a stepping stone. We were never staying in this division long-term and even if we did it would be on a Burnley level. Top players don't sign for Burnley.

Sander is a highly talented and technically superb footballer. He could easily go on to play for the likes of a top 6 Premier League team. He was never suited to the way we play or the type of player who fits into the system.

Been there for most of 60 + years, it's not too bad in the Championship but a bit too demeaning below that..... :tumbleweed:

Fuck it sell anyone with any ability if thats the case. Little Ol Stepping Stone FC.

But if we stayed up then there's a very good chance Sander would stay with us, alas we're going down and he's most likely got a relegation clause in his contract, something which, if we didn't agree to, he wouldn't sign in the first place.

Until we're an established PL club then yes, we're a stepping stone. God forbid the kid wants to further his career.

I agree so lets sell Bogle now as well.

If selling Berge meant we aren’t under pressure to sell O’Connell, Egan or Bogle then I’m not too fussed. Don’t think Berge is quite the right fit for us and think we desperately lack a set piece specialist or a creative attacking midfielder

No he didn’t

At no point has anybody at Sheffield United FC gone on record to say Berge wants to leave.

I know you're obviously a bit of a Sander Berge fanboy (going off the username), you laughed at my suggestion that he would be trying to get his agent to engineer a move away from us - well Wilder has more or less now gone on record and said he wants out.

"He wants to play for a top team." Which we're clearly not & we're about to be relegated.
"Hopefully he still has some games left with the club." This will be based on him returning to fitness this season.
"If he goes it will be with our blessing." Conversations will already have taken place.

Read between the lines pal.
He's more or less said Berge wants to go if / when we're relegated. This was obvious anyway, he didn't want to join us until we'd proven ourselves to him as a midtable Prem club. We're now nowhere near it and he wants out. No hard feelings.

I know you want to believe otherwise, but he's not sticking around for trips to Barnsley & Luton.

Whether or not you think he’s taken his chance here is irrelevant (he’s certainly not been as amazing as some make out). But he had next to no influence on the way we played from my point of view. When he leaves I’ll not be losing any sleep over it, it never felt as though we signed a wonder kid in the first place, but he’ll most likely thrive in a different system with better players. Nothing wrong with this place being a stepping stone for him, it’s just too bad it didn’t work out as we all hoped.

Klopp is an admirer of his. Maybe we can skank Liverpool like they did us for Brewster.

It's a pity a very good point got ruined by that second paragraph.

I think he will be with us until the end of August at least, I think anyone interested will want to see how he does after his injury in the first few games in the championship. We will then probably sell him for less than we bought him 1 minute before the transfer deadline passes and have no replacement or ageing loanee. Nice day out at Palace last season, which will stick in my mind but that's about it.

berges ideal formation would be 4231 dont think he ever fitted in to our flat 3 midfield system
He'd have been good in the Norwood role given time. But he didn't hit the ground running and Norwood was playing above his current league 2 form.

As he improved he'd have done well there in my opinion, but poor team form and injury have ballsed that up.

I can see why the 'stepping stone' comment has riled a few, probably another case of Wilder not choosing his words too wisely.
But honestly, we shouldn't be getting our knickers into too much of a twist about 1 or 2 player having a relegation clause, especially when 1 of them is an international player with the world at his feet.
Other, much richer and without wanting to sound Tinpot, much bigger clubs will have numerous players with similar clauses. It is what it is, and doesn't remotely suggest that we are heading for another period of stagnation.

Recover the injury over the summer show what he can do until January then if all looks good clubs will come after him with a good fee.
