My take ...

Decided to read the whole thread before writing anything (not a lot else to do on a non-football, non-pub, non-owt Friday). I also took the advantage of watching Barnsley v Chelsea.
Firstly, we won, and are in the quarter finals. This is good news which was not inevitable. I thought Bogle was great, and we appear to have stumbled on a player with real potential. Ramsdale did ok, and because Bristol City seem to present far less of a challenge than their neighbours (who I thought were great, and "managed" us far better than Plymouth, who had more skill but less "oomph"), the defence was ok.
Now for the less good bit. If we agree that Chelsea's second string would make a decent PL side, rather better than we are now, it's likely that we'll make less of a game against them than Barnsley did. Barnsley had (and have) something we've shown little of this season - a plan, and reasonably effective tactics and skills. They were solid, passed well, and had a go at keeping possession. But what really struck me was that they had some urgency and purpose, they defended in numbers, and got the ball forward relatively quickly. They didn't spend forever tapping it around and seemed to recognise that the aim of the game was to put the ball in Chelsea's net. They didn't succeed, but their "having a go " wasn't short of skill and some effectiveness. They weren't bad to watch either- I didn't nod off!
I spoke to Esteemed Forgeblade during the game and said "Is it me or do we play in a really ponderous and sluggish way?". Sadly, I have to say it wasn't my tactical ineptitude, but he confirmed that compared to Barnsley, we look slow and ponderous.

So, this is actually the embarrassing part. Despite the 4 great years, the double promotions, the £100 million plus spent, we're likely in a few short months to end up where we've spent many years - in the same division as little old Barnsley.
It does make you think, "what was all that about then?"
The other embarrassing part is that if Barnsley had won, the way we have been "performing", we would perhaps have no better chance of winning than we have at Chelsea.
It's obvious I'm no Clapper, but I'm not a doom merchant either. However, I do think that after watching two fairly average Championship sides on consecutive nights, that those who think we'll storm that league next year are a bit deluded.

I don't think we'll struggle, but I don't think we'll run away with it like some people think.

It’s obviously difficult to say we will walk it and not many do walk the championship but I think it’s a really poor league at the minute and is only going to get poorer. No teams are going to be spending money and we have players that have all proved themselves at championship level. I firmly believe if we keep the manager and he is given the opportunity to freshen a few things up we will get promoted again next season.

I really hope so, and hope that if we do, we're not in for another "repeat performance ". Sadly, experiences of similar sized clubs do indicate a yoyo carry on. Still better than League 1 though!!

Think a few might be a bit defensive as it was a win at a time when wins are like rocking horse shit.

We did look poor, but playing badly and winning is a tonne better than playing badly and losing.

Also Bristol were bad and made for a dull game, it was a bit like Jos Luhukay's (spelling?) brief stay at Wednesday when we played them - at least we managed a decent enough spell to force the pen!

I dunno about that. I'd say we played a bit more than 'half pace'. The sticking point is the failure to penetrate even when facing ten men. I did expect us to over-run them after the penalty, but we still seemed to get stuck in the mud, and when we went back to 5-3-2, it just went all Wilderball again and BCFC just mopped it up. Don't get me wrong. They looked crap throughout the game. They offered us no real threat bar a few sparks (testimony to our defence) but elsewhere we looked fragile and desperate at times.

It's good to debate the game and the team with you Chris. After a worrying start with mentions of learning difficulties, we've moved on and like many in what you term 'pommpey's manor' (I don't see it that way, but it is a thread I started) you wanna talk football and don't seem too rattled by my method of looking at the match, nor want to mark my scorecard on worthiness as a Blades supporter.

I don't believe any of the players or playing staff would lower themselves to get involved in activities on S24SU, let alone exchange fire with someone like me, a football supporter and footballing layman. They will have had extensive briefs within the club about what is said online and what they should avoid, and for all the right reasons. The way they deal with critics such as me is to let their game do the talking, which I think is absolutely right. Like the Man U game where we definitely upped it and deservedly beat them, we were much beyond criticism across the park, and showed what we are capable of. I don't think anyone had anything really bad to say about SUFC that night. How can you?

One concerning element of the game for me was the sub of Sharp for Norwood ,nothing to do with those 2 ,I think it was solely for the purpose of Brewster and he didnt respond. He obviously has some attributes but we will have to put a lot of work into him.

To be honest Pommpey I have tried to talk about football with you have given my points looking back through our last few discussions shall I say. To my discredit i have been dragged into something which to be honest from an outside looks pretty pathetic. I think you would agreed it doesn’t make either of us looking particularly good.
Tell you what I will try to keep it to football and apologise if I have gotten personal I don’t think I have overstepped the mark but clearly you do and for that I apologise.
One thing I will ask you is you said in an earlier post the club is “fucking fucked” now if you mean us getting relegated this season then yes it is however I’d you mean in general I can’t think why you would believe this. We have not been in a better financial position in our history. Yea we are going down yes it’s disappointing but I think even you can see that we have some great foundations?
I am passionate about this club and passionate about the manager it doesn’t come across in the right way sometimes I admit. But no way are we a bad team and have bad players, as bad as some have been at times there are a lot of mitigating circumstances why this is. It seems that certain people like to disregard this and get off on criticising the club, players and management.

My take on McB is that he is performing pretty much how we could have realistically expected him to. He looks decent some games and poor in others, i.e. he is inconsistent. Could we have expected any more? £20m is not a lot of money for a striker in the premier league, as Joelinton, Haller, Wesley, etc, etc have shown.

People will have their own opinion but I don’t think he’s been that bad, it’s not his fault we lump the ball up to him when he plays. I thought he was a decent signing when he arrived, and was probably as good as we could have reasonably expected to sign at the time, being young with potential to improve and having just had a stellar season in the championship.

One concerning element of the game for me was the sub of Sharp for Norwood ,nothing to do with those 2 ,I think it was solely for the purpose of Brewster and he didnt respond. He obviously has some attributes but we will have to put a lot of work into him.

True. It's evident that our ship is taking on water and Wilder is doing all he can to stem the flow. Knowing what I know about this, there comes a point when the vessel reaches what we call the 'point of vanishing stability' when you know it is going to either sink or capsize, but you keep your guns firing. Wilder is doing this, regardless of holes (our midfield) and our guns (our front line) which seem to be shooting blanks, or who are starved of rounds to fire.

I hope I`m wrong but I watched him in the England matches including before signing with us and he seemed to be more of a lone wolf. Marginally better but still firing blanks. He was always subbed off in the 2nd half or brought on late.

All I can say is he needs a goal and that will either make or break him. Unfortunately I said the same about McBurnie before he scored for us just hope Brewster turns into a goal machine.
