I cannot believe he had the audacity to blame everyone else for him losing his job. That alone says to me not only is he thick enough to genuinely believe the bile he spouts but he doesn’t understand why what he’s said is so wrong.

The second point is interesting I’d imagine for many to come off it would feel like a defeat. If we accept that all of them will have had it as kids coming up then to give that up in the face of abuse would feel like quitting. How easily would any of us give something we enjoy up because there were a bunch of blokes there shouting abuse? Not easily is my guess and certainly not without at least some form of verbal altercation. Eventually many too either quit it or hand it over to a brand manager but that’s a decision which takes a lot of emotional maturity to make.

I think it was Ramsdale who mentioned it and said it's how they all (friends from football and other mates) communicate with each other. I don't really understand why they don't limit accounts so only their friends can see it. It's not like they're in a profession where they're going to gain fans from their social media presence!

I understand some people saying ignore it, don't give them any attention, and I think there's some merit to that idea. In practice though it's not that easy for the individual affected, and by censoring that kind of behaviour we're not only letting people know that it's not socially acceptable but also showing our support for those targeted.

There's a reason people don't behave certain ways in public and it's not just the physical threat of getting a smack, it's also that people would think you were genuinely insane. Especially when it comes to racial abuse.

The internet and social media are still fairly new. We're still figuring out how it fits in culturally and how things should be treated. But that also means we get to have a say in how it develops, and I don't see why we should say "just shrug it off" when we could be saying as a group that this isn't normal and it isn't okay.

Some of the things that gets said to people on the internet is just way beyond what would ever be acceptable face-to-face. A lot of it goes far past shouting "the referee's a wanker" or calling a player shite and beyond what you'd hear even in a stadium.

Maybe I’m naive but I’d like to think that based on my interactions in real life, the vast majority of people in the world are decent human beings, or at the very least they are tolerable. If I apply that logic to the internet, I’d be likely to think that the world was full of cunts (and I suppose it is to some extent, but not the vast majority of the world).

The one thing the internet does is that it gives people a voice to a much larger audience than people have ever had before. It also allows people to create a completely different persona that absolves the actual person behind it of all responsibility. Only in the most extreme cases are there any repercussions for a lot of what is said online.

I don’t necessarily think that social media has to be a bad thing but we certainly have to review its place in society.

It's tough, because we all know there are trolls out there just desperate to get a rise out of people, and giving them attention doesn't always make it better. But ignoring the problem also doesn't make it go away.

When we look at the major changes in attitudes over time then I can't think of a time it was triggered by ignoring the issue. Racism, LGBT issues, even things like smoking or drink driving, we didn't just ignore people and wait for them to catch up, it took a lot of people to stand up and say "This isn't good".

Some of these idiots online might be sociopaths that we can't change. What we can do though is make it clear that we, as a society, don't think it's okay. We don't think it's funny, we don't think it's cool, we don't think you're saying or doing anything clever, you're just being abusive and you need to stop. That combined with pressuring sites to better moderate that behaviour, it can go a long way to minimising the problem.

The sticks and stones bollocks doesn't wash anywhere and never has. It's a retort to help victims of bullying and abuse stand a little taller and not have to just stand there and take it, but it isn't true and for some people has become a reason to tolerate or even accept verbal abuse.
