Anybody Know The Story Behind This? - player threats

You expect it off the other teams fans. Cant imagine its as easy to ignore when its your own fans.

Maybe youre right though, I'd find it inspiring if i worked in an underperforming office, gave 100% to it, turned up sick and just got called shit, repeatedly by the customers (or whatever us fans are). Even better if they made me cute nicknames. Wouldnt affect me mentally at all.

If your salary was the equivalent of a lottery win every year for being shit at your job and putting no effort in I really don't think it would bother you one bit

Remember both mcburnie and moose have been caught drink driving before matches... They could not give a toss about their form as long as they get paid

Maybe allow Internet providers to pass on IP addresses of abusers to police (or is that too easy to avoid?)
Apart from the difficulties with VPN, as Yogi mentioned, I think that they do if the police turn up with a warrant. On VPNs, I'm not sure how completely they hide your identity - someone must be issuing the IP address, even if it's the VPN provider. The IT bods on here must know.
I think VPN is a bit of a red herring, though, would all these trolls make sure all their activities went through a VPN all the time? Often you can work out who they are just be studying their feed.

Will always admit I’ve probably gone a bit too far at times saying a player has been wank or shit, which in the bigger picture achieves nothing but showing me up if anything. There are some (one poster in particular comes to mind straight away) who go beyond that, wishing injury for example, and plenty more that do get very personal with some players. Don’t understand it myself, and for things to go even further beyond that, like race, sexuality etc, is just plain evil.

I think it would be outright ridiculous to ban social media outlets, but something more should be done to monitor this type of thing. Like how many Twitter accounts hiding behind a random footballer as their profile picture can simply use the platform to spout evil things with no repercussions? They’re standing by and allowing it to happen.

I can't see where I blame anyone, trying to look at it from a differing perspective and a alternate remedy.
Life has taught me stupid, moronic people are not worth listening too, so on social media switch them off or bar.
The alternative you offer seems naive to me, unfortunatly the behavior we are speaking of is part of being human, human nature, difficult to ledgislate against.
As regards punishment, don't listen, switch off, then the perpetrators waste there own time and energy, listening and picking up the baton fuels there egos.
If you believe I condone such behavior you are mistaken, I also dislike a blame culture which seems prevalent today.
I believe in your heart you do not condone these stupid ignorant people. But ignoring it is not the answer in fact that is part of the problem, by not challenging it you are as guilty as someone who condones it.

This type of discussion and media coverage provides oxygen to these racist cowards. We should follow Jacinda Ardern's response to the Christchurch terror attack and just not give them the publicity. The matter should be dealt with privately, between victim, police and (if only) social media platforms. That way there would be justice and no glorification for these disgusting no marks.

Putting no effort in? See hes taken injections to play for us so i just dont buy that at all.

But whatever gives you a reason to carry on as you are mate. First it was hed find it a laugh. Now its because hes a drink driver who doesnt give a monkeys. I think youll keep finding a reason, no point arguing with you.

One thing that seems obvious concerning all this abuse is that "taking the knee" is not working.
Could it be that we have reached the point where it is doing more harm than good?

I repeat, 4 pages in and no one knows fuck all about it yet there's still so much mightier than thou speech in here, nowt changes.

I’ve a right good idea, something which i know won’t catch on, why not wait until we find out what’s gone off then debate and spout hyperbole bollocks then.

I don't personally use daft names for the player don't see the point but the point I'm making is I can see why people are pissed off with them

You can see that Billy Sharp despite his age and lack of physical attributes is giving his all in the games... Brewster, Moose and McBurnie sadly aren't despite them all taking millions from the club.

The drink driving only highlights the lack of commitment and fact that they are not making serious efforts to get fit imo

Dont get your point. All its done is highlight a growing trend amongst blades fans which probably does need addressing. Does it really matter what the exact instance is?

Some sites have VPN blockers on them don’t they? I know Netflix have now stopped you from being able to access Australian, US Netflix etc from the UK?

I’m sure for some people though whatever they do, it can be bypassed but it would be a start at least. It would be good to just see that they are actually making an effort to stop it happening rather than washing their hands of everything that happens on their platforms.
Yeah I think Disney are really trying to crack down on it too. Thing is it’s just gonna turn into an arms race as the major selling point of commercial VPN’s is that they allow you to circumvent region blocking in terms of content so they’ll continually be looking for work arounds. On the none commercial side for people who are tech savvy and want to remain anonymous then they’ll do it and it’s just not financially worth it for any large sites to try and stop them.

Wishing any footballer from any team physical harm in any group or forum is out of order (We all get carried away sometimes and I probably have before).
Going on to their social media and tweeting that at them or their family is downright wrong and should be stopped, even if that means criminal action.

I do wonder why players use social media. I mean, they say they use it to communicate with friends, but then why don't they restrict their accounts? It's madness. Anyone in the public eye gets abuse. Sad fact of life. Footballers are going to get shit from their fans when they're doing badly and abuse from opposition fans.

If players are reading this board they better start reading the Tom Dip thread.

Yeah i understand. There are definitely better professionals than others and losing your rag is something we all do, as is getting fucked off with players.

The problem ive got is its getting to a point where its more than that. It doesnt even seem reactionary, its all the time, no matter what, scapegoating and abuse at certain players. Thats where it goes too far for me, and we're bang at it on here and the socials in recent times. I dont think its reasonable to expect it to not affect players reading it. At best they'll act not bothered, which we've all done before.

So Wilder saying the police need to be involved because some Blades fans have called some players shit in different ways is what he’s highlighting? No, it isn’t.

No one knows what’s gone off, people are presuming it’s Blades fans doing whatever they’ve done for Wilder to say police are needed, it could be any fan or human being behind a persona?

No one knows fuck all about it because they like to highlight an issue but then never say what the issue is. It needs outing, if it isn’t outed then how can any fucker do owt about it?

They say they don’t like to discuss the issue because it gives the wanker airtime, well they’ve already given the wanker airtime by highlighting there is an issue, just get it out there then everybody can help every nice human being out to put these stupid issues and wankers away for good, that’s my point!

I understand what you're saying, but I also think that when you have widespread condemnation that is a good antidote to it, probably helps those being abused to see it and generally makes it clear to others that it's not acceptable.

The second point is interesting I’d imagine for many to come off it would feel like a defeat. If we accept that all of them will have had it as kids coming up then to give that up in the face of abuse would feel like quitting. How easily would any of us give something we enjoy up because there were a bunch of blokes there shouting abuse? Not easily is my guess and certainly not without at least some form of verbal altercation. Eventually many too either quit it or hand it over to a brand manager but that’s a decision which takes a lot of emotional maturity to make.

I don't do Social Media at all this is the only chat site I come on & don't class this as SM, from what I can gather people have been slagging players off on SM. This is detestable it matters not what their colour or creed is you don't go on and threaten them or their families. The truth behind the abuse is yet to be established as I understand, so it is assumptions at the moment.

I am appalled to think that fellow Blades can go on these platforms and direct this kind of tirade at anyone let alone a footballer, so we're bottom, we're crap welcome to life as a Blade it's not new we've always built the fans up then brought them down to earth. If anything it has made me love them even more over the last almost 60 years, being a Blade is not easy yes, say so & so had a poor game on here but don't single folk out on SM.

I think almost everyone has walked out of BDTBL at some point in life and said either X,Y or Z had a bad game, that has always been part of the football experience. It changes totally when someone with a brain the size of an amoeba goes on SM and threatens people or their families.

And I mean threatens them harm and such or references their ethnicity that is despicable, Mike Dean and his family have received death threats FGS he's a referee. I hope this is sorted as soon as can be as it's not something I like being associated with my club, and I really thought our fans were better than this.

But these companies are to blame. They're living in the last century. Internet is global and they are still trying to parcel everything up along geographical boundaries. All they have to do is change the way broadcasting rights work based on viewers/downloads/subscribers rather than country. In some cases there are advertising issues, but nothing that is insurmountable.
It's like the old days of DVDs, where they released a film in the US several weeks before Europe and then moaned like crazy about pirates costing them billions. Well just release it on the same date everywhere then, idiots. Living abroad you realise how stupid it is. Netflix will offer the same film in the UK and in Germany, and to their credit they offer most films in its original language, but I might have to have German titles on it, or it's not in 5.1 surround, or a series available in the UK isn't available in Germany. Why? What benefit do they get out of restricting everything?

Unfortunately no fan base is better than this football has a real problem and I don’t know how it can be tackled. All we as fans can do is have conversations like this so that it doesn’t just become an accepted part of being a fan.

That Yogi is a brilliant statement short, succinct and to the point well done mate Pete.

If they could turn up with a warrant saying "we need to find the author of this message...................................." it would be workable, but I don't think it works like that ☹️

I agree it’s none sensical and invites the us of VPN’s or pirating. For example Disney’s latest big release was the mandalorian which was a timed exclusive to the US version of the service resulting in a loss of revenue due to everyone else pirating it. I can only imagine they think by creating a false sense of scarcity they’re bumping up demand but like you say it’s daft and self defeating.

Generally the law differentiates between messages posted on a forum like this and messages sent directly to an individual on Twitter etc. The Malicious Communications Act is the one you want.

Merely stating on here that someone is "shit" is not an entirely pleasant or particularly helpful, but is not illegal. Sending threatening or abusive letters, emails or tweets to an individual could prosecuted as an offence under the Act.

A person commits an offence if he or she sends to another person, a letter, electronic communication or article of any description which is:-

  • Indecent or grossly offensive; or
  • A threat; or
  • False and known or believed to be false by the sender.

In reality, the bar for what is "grossly offensive" is really quite high , offset against Article 10 of the ECHR and is often not seen within the public interest to try and prosecute. I'd guess that, unless the messages were appallingly shocking, the perpetrators would receive a ticking off from the investigating officers and nothing more.

As for the forum, we are well aware of our legal responsibilities but if anyone has a particular issue with anything posted, I suggest they report the post via the forum or, if not a member, email postbag @ s24su.com and we'll have a look into it.

I think it does. They can find out the IP address from the platform, i.e. Twitter, and the home address from the internet service provider.

The Police can legally "request" (read: demand) all identifiable information held by a platform provider (such as us). This will include:

  • Any IP addresses used to access the platform.
  • Email address
  • In the instances of Facebook/Twitter - any telephone numbers or location data linked to the account.

If it's someone particularly thick (and let's face it, there's not too many braincells on show on Twitter these days), you can find their names, workplaces and narrow down where they live most of the time based on the information they themselves have posted.

The issue is where people set up "burner" accounts solely for the purposes of trolling.

Bloody hell, it's a good job I wear my Zorro mask when posting.

Sad times indeed.. Casual racism seems everywhere..

There's a video (hopefully a sick joke) doing the rounds, it's a story from CNN allegedly, about a woman who's still driving at 103 years old..

They exit the story with a gangster rap song which is disgraceful and the presenter issues an apology, if this is real we're in a bad place..

Note, this may not be real this could be some arseholes idea of a sick joke, but on both counts its very wrong and symptomatic of the current situation.

And no I won't be forwarding it.
