Premier league myth

If you're really going to go down this route, check out yearly copa del rey results, which are far greater surprises than the ones you see in England.
Yes I know one of Barcelona, Real Madid, or Atletico Madrid don't win the league every year

The quality of the pitches makes a huge difference. It can be a great leveller.

Today, Premier league players perform on pitches that are like carpets. These players would struggle to play their tippy-tappy high speed football on pitches that represented a farmers field.

Last week on the BBC there were clips of Colin Bell. Top flight match at the Lane 3-3 draw when Bell scored their second goal. The pitch was a ploughed up field.

Lower league clubs at home have a chance against Premier league clubs if they press them. These top flight players don't have the experience of playing on these surfaces.

In addition the protection today's players get is completely different.

A great example is the George Best goal against Chelsea at Old Trafford. He skipped a challenge from Ron Harris and went on to round Bonnetti and score. I can't think of a curent player that wouldn't have gone down.

The likes of Grealish would have gone over if Ron Harris had breathed on him.

Teams used to take the FA Cup seriously. It’s crap now*, a run out for the bit part players in the PL during the early stages.

It’s been devalued and will go the way of whatever the fuck the League Cup is called now.

*unless we progress through the rounds, obviously.

OP makes me laugh belittles the Premier League then quotes FA Cup matches.
It was the same before the Premier League you know. FA Cup is always an exception.
Go look at the German league and there cup and you will find the same thing through their history little teams beating the bigger ones.

OP must be bored. :)

Just a quick google

Sunderland 1 Leeds 0

Bob Stokoe's Division Two side stunned mighty Leeds, with Ian Porterfield's first-half goal and Jim Montgomery's second-half save the highlights of the contest in the 1973 final at Wembley.

The FA Cup used to be the most prestigious competition in the country.
Now it's barely considered above the League cup.

Today teams will sacrifice both cups in the belief it will help them to stay up/to qualify for europe/to progress further in europe/to challenge for the title.

Plus you're missing the greatest point when comparing different countries league systems.
We have the most money flowing throwing our professional leagues than anywhere else.

There are clubs in our second division with better finances than sides in the top league of Spain/Germany/Italy etc.

Very difficult to compare eras. But players like Greaves who were so far ahead of their peers would likely be just as far ahead of their peers now as well.

They'd have the same advantages available to them as current players and while I believe in hard work and improving yourself over natural ability there has to be a certain level of athletic and mental skill/strength in any era to be the best.

Jimmy Greaves:
20 goals in friendlies.
19 goals against home nations.
1 goal in World Cup finals.
3 goals in World Cup Qualifiers
0 goals in European qualifiers.

Harry Kane:
5 goals in friendlies
1 goal against home nations.
6 goals in World Cup Finals
5 goals in World Cup Qualifiers
15 goals in European Qualifiers

Sorry Bianca, with the protection and pitches that Kane has Greaves would be double that. On the mud heaps with the tackling allowed back then Kane would be at least 30% less.

It's like comparing apples and pears, but Greaves would be up there with Ronaldo and Messi in goals scored in the modern game. Skill, balance, speed, positional sense, finishing are nothing to do with athleticism and can't be found in the gym however long you spend in there.

Just think how good Greaves would have been if he hadn't smoked and got pissed regularly.

This discussion has been done on here so many times and although it's interesting, like SouthEssexBlade says, it's like comparing Apples and Oranges given the many differences in the game.

I don't think you can compare Kane to Bobby Charlton either as they were completely different types of players. Kane is a poacher goalscorer, whereas Bobby was more of an attacking midfielder, but could do everything. Can you imagine telling Kane to mark Beckenbauer?

On the big stage, Charlton scored two quality goals that beat Portugal in the World Cup semi final. Kane scored 2 against Tunisia and 3 against Panama, of which 2 were penalties (still got to score them though) and 1 which was basically a deflection off his heel that he knew nothing about.

yes
Maybe one a season not 75 percent
Pick the best players out of today's premier league and make the best team the Leeds,Liverpool, Chelsea teams of the 70s,Manchester United,Arsenal of the 90s would hammer them that cannot be right when we are told that this is the best league in the world
3 years ago the BBC replayed the United v Manchester United game from Aug 1992 in full as part of 25 years of the Premier League. I watched it and it was utter dogshit. Both sides could hardly string 3 passes together before losing possession.

The idea that the athletes of today wouldn't be able to keep up with the players of the 60's and 70's is just misty-eyed nonsense.

And if Moore, Banks, Charlton etc were playing today they wouldn't get picked for England?
You wouldn't get movement out of Moore, Banks, and Charlton is 83 and has dementia so I doubt any would get picked for England, no.

Just think how good Greaves would have been if he hadn't smoked and got pissed regularly.

As I said, what Greaves had is what makes exceptional players whatever the age. With current training, diet, conditioning, analytics etc. he would be a modern great. With current methods Jimmy could be 20% quicker than he was, sorry but fuck me that is scary and I was never a defender.

That game was barely recognisable as football.

If we had a time machine and you pitted todays England side against the side that won the world cup, this side would wipe the floor with them.

If the '66 side had the same level of training, fitness etc that today's players have, who knows?

But they wouldn't be athletes of today, they'd be 1960's players playing against 60's players on 60's pitches.

I remember the furore in the media in the mid 90's around Rio Ferdinand coming through at West Ham because... he could pass the ball! 😂 😂

Seriously, just imagine a player being heralded now because they could do a basic skill required in the game.

It depends which way the time machine is travelling!

Take the current players back to 66 and half would leave the field with sore feet due to the weight of the ball, the other half would leave due to the tackles that were allowed by a 66 ref.

Indeed, the 66 team were World champions. We've never been close since.

They'd need to catch up to them in order to tackle them

People are always "bigging-up" things*** e.g. the Premier League, making out that it is far better than anything else, any competitor, etc., etc.
I, and I am sure I am not alone in this, do not and have never believed it is the "best".
From the point of view of the fans, it certainly is not the "best" league in the world.
Before covid, you only had to look at the cost, access, TV scheduling, treatment of fans, etc.
From what I have read and heard the Bundesliga is far better on all those counts. It certainly shows more interest in its fans.
Whatever else football is about the premier concern should be the fans not money.

(*** Obviously, not wishing to upset anyone or anyfink, isn't that what brexit was all about? What a very British, apologies English trait. Ooops! ;)🤣😊😇😭🤫)
