This myth regarding the premier league being the best in the world
Leeds united hammered by Crawley, Brighton struggled against Newport,Liverpool struggled against Aston Villa kids first half we scrapped through against Bristol Rovers,Everton v Rotherham Blackpool through against West Brom
The Manchester United team of Giggs,Scholes,Cantona,and the rest,the Liverpool, Leeds teams of the 70s,Arsenal invincibles would hammer today's premier league teams
How many of today's England players would get into the 1966 World Cup team NON
Football has gone backwards watching today's football sends you to sleep

Pick the best players out of today's premier league and make the best team the Leeds,Liverpool, Chelsea teams of the 70s,Manchester United,Arsenal of the 90s would hammer them that cannot be right when we are told that this is the best league in the world

more so now as the top clubs play on pristine bowling green quality surfaces
and have to overcome playing on cabbage patches

we didnt struggle v bristol we were always in front and had 22 attempts compared with some it was comfortable

burnley made it hard for themselves v mk dons, that was in doubt throughout we werent
 
The elite teams of today are so far ahead of what professional football was like back in the 60s, 70s and even the 90s. Players are much better athletes now and I’d even argue the gap between the top level, (not necessarily elite level) and third tier isn’t anywhere near as pronounced nowadays due to improved knowledge of fitness and advancements when it comes to coaching.

I’m not trying to belittle the success of teams from the past, or argue that certain individuals didn’t possess a great deal of talent, obviously there are some players who were very good. Football as a sport has evolved considerably though, and even championship teams are now massively ahead of where second division teams from 30-40 years ago.

Based on athleticism, and footballing ability, I’d argue that a substantial number of the current England squad would quite easily walk into the 1966 team. Again, that’s not me suggesting that winning the World Cup wasn’t a huge achievement, but that it’s incredibly biased to imply that football hasn’t evolved over the past 55 years, and you should probably take off your nostalgia goggles once in a while.

The FA cup isn't a leveller, teams and players can't be arsed with it, weaker sides, pampered players having to slum it at lower league grounds knocks the fight out of the poor little lambs,
 
Personally I find it nigh in impossible to compare teams and players from different eras.
Diet, fitness, training and attitude to the game for players along with pitches and rules to name but a few.
Messi and Ronaldo transported in to mid 70's football would find it a lot more difficult than today whereas Best, Cruyff and Pele would thrive on the surfaces they'd play on every match and the protection they'd get from the ref.

You tell me to take off my nostalgic goggles off I think that sky have done a brilliant job in brainwashing the general public football today as a spectacle is at best average remember when channel 5 had Italian football on that's the kind of football we are watching now how long did that last until people started to turn off you said regarding fitness do me a favour Liverpool won the league, UEFA cup got to FA Cup finals with 16 outfield players playing 65 plus games on muddy pitches and in the UEFA Cup final both fullbacks scored if you think today's players are fit watch the 1966 World Cup final then come back after watching how much Ground Alan Ball covers and tell me that today's footballers cover more ground

All of today's England players would get into the 66 world Cup team in reality as their pace and fitness is on another planet.

Eric Dier,Jorden Henderson or Alan Ball,Bobby Charlton two have no pace two have you choose

Was having this discussion recently about Harry Kane. Commentators were putting him in the same bracket has Jimmy Greaves and Bobby Charlton. My argument is that he's better, by far. You have touched on the athleticism of the players these days and their condition and diet etc. but look even further...

Bobby Charlton scored 16 of his goals against the home nations, 5 against the powerhouse that is Luxembourg and 3 against USA (1950s USA!!) Charlton scored 4 goals in World Cups.

Kane will break Rooneys record easily. He's on 32 goals now and coming up to his prime at the age of 27.

If you're really going to go down this route, check out yearly copa del rey results, which are far greater surprises than the ones you see in England.

Kane for England 51 games 32 goals

Greaves 57 games 44 goals.
 
Back when reaching an F A Cup final at Wembley was regarded as the pinnacle of a player's career, clubs used 13 or 14 players each season.

For several years now the early rounds are just opportunities to give fringe players a game, even Championship clubs do that, so "upsets" today are diluted.

Let's take that Colchester v Leeds game in 1971. The Dirties side was: Sprake, Reaney, Cooper, Bates, Charlton, Hunter, Lorimer, Clarke, Jones, Giles, Madeley. So apart from Bremner it was completely full strength. That was a proper giant killing. Did that make the 1st Division in 1971 shite?

For the ones comparing todays players being much fitter than the players of yesteryear, it's incomparable.

Players from yesteryear also played on quagmire pitches when there were no subs. So how would todays players fare in those circumstances?

Also they played with a ball that weight a tonne....and against defenders that could literally kick the shit out of you.... again how would todays players fare in those circumstances?
 
Sheffield United v Newcastle United would be a real spectacle Bobby Moncur,Tommy Cassidy,Malcolm Macdonald against Tony Currie,Alan Woodward,Len Badger But what I have to look forward to is Joelinton,the Longstaff brothers v Boyle,Bryan,Mousset,I'm not blaming the players but come on or shall I take off my nostalgic goggles off
 
Who says it's the best in the world, and who defines what "best" actually means?
I've only ever heard it in relation to being the most entertaining, or competitive rather than best in terms of quality.
