Outgoing? John Lunsdtram

Friendly reminder if you're reading John. I hope you're looking forward to locking horns with such titans as Hibernian and the likes :)

Lundstram isn't getting any younger, having played the majority of his career at a relatively low level he won’t have a huge pot of cash to see him through to old age.

His stock has never been higher and I don't blame him one bit for trying to eek out every last penny from his football career. Let’s face it, no one is going to leave Sheffield United as a multi millionaire and I’m 90% certain that he knows exactly where he will be playing next season and how much he’ll be getting paid.

Why else would he turn down an improved contract, just to ‘gamble’ on possibly getting a better deal as a free agent?

The latest article from Rangers suggests that he could go there in the summer and be their top earner on around £40k per week:

I mean, the figures cited could be utter bullshit, but imagine swapping the PL for the SPL. The SPL on the whole is lower Champ, L1 standard. It smacks of a lack of ambition and dedication from the lad. If he thinks he deserves more than we offer him, fair enough, but to leave and not even for another PL side?!

He's far from established here, had one purple patch for a few months last season, nothing before and no form or commitment since. It's almost as though a brief stint as a Fantasy Football legend went to his head.

My only regret would be not getting even a small fee for him, but for me, he gets nowhere near the squad again. We're low on depth, but we only want those committed to the cause.

If he’s moving for the money then fair enough I can’t knock him a footballers career is short and can end in a split second.

He’s not good enough to start week in week out for most prem sides and it’s unlikely many champ clubs would pay him that much. So he gets to go and play for a man he idolises and win a few trophies for more money. Fair enough best of luck and we’ll move on if we want to establish ourselves at around this level over the next 5 years he’d have only been a depth piece.

It’s a complete no-brainer from Lunny’s point of view. More money, a manager he loves, European football guaranteed, and playing at a lower level so he should do quite well.

Sadly, on recent showings, a half arsed Lunny would still be our best midfielder. And I don't even think it would be close.

Can definitely see him as the type of player who'd rather be a big fish in a small pond.

REPORT IN ATHLETIC CLAIMS RANGERS ADMIRERS OF PREMIER LEAGUE MIDFIELDER, £4M POSSIBLE COST

However, according to the report, Rangers will face competition from clubs in the Premier League if they are to make a move for the midfielder in the January transfer window. The report has added that the 26-year-old midfielder, who is out of contract at the Blades at the end of the season, could cost £4 million this month.

No club would pay £4m when they can get him for free in 6months time. Possibly staying to end of season

I suppose if Gers see him as someone to strengthen the squad to get them over the line for the title they wouldn't object.

Also who is to say they are favorites? Maybe they sign him in Jan or someone else takes him in June.

It's all a game of cards from now on...

If that's the case then we should snap their hands off.

I was mortified when his name was on the teamsheet against Bournemouth at the start of last season but to be fair he made some good contributions, scored some important goals and defied his critics.
In the grand scheme of things though, besides the first half of last season, he has hardly pulled any trees up since we signed him and was surprised to see him still here based on him barely seeing any game time in the Championship.

Nothing against the lad, but I want to see him gone now. He knows he isn't going to be at the Lane next season so he's not going to put himself in harms way for the cause (and why should he tbh).

Let's get him out of the door ASAP, and bring in another couple in the middle of the park. Time for all parties to move on with no hard feelings.

Us letting John go:

Crystal Palace are keen to sign Sheffield United midfielder John Lundstram but are likely to wait until his contract expires next summer, as reported by the Sun

Scott Airfield out for a good while.

They can risk it but would a million or two for Lunny be decent insurance to being down a key player in a crucial run in?

I've no issue with him wanting more for his contract. If I could earn enough to ensure my kids and grandkids and possibly great grandkids would never need to struggle to live, like myself, I'd be selfish and look to how I could maximise everything possible. What I can't accept is that with, the talent he has, he seems to be getting worse every week. If I wanted a decent contract I'd be busting my arse off to prove I deserved one, whether at United or elsewhere. He just doesn't seem to be doing that. Look at all those talented kids, with shit attitudes, that think they're made it and now are at a level that for their skill is embarrassing. Sestanovic, Jordan Slew, Carruthers (hemel Hempstead ffs), etc ( sure you could add many more). Its not the wanting to move to maximise my earnings but the half arsed efforts being made. Who is going to give him what he wants? I'm sure he's hoping Rangers but if I was Gerard I'd stay well clear based on current efforts and performance. The only Rangers hed be looking at is QPR if he's lucky of Concord Rangers.

What 'Run in'?

If he isn't going to stay, then get rid.

But personally I can't see many sides being in for him anyway, maybe Rangers, but none at PL level.

Has anybody thought that Lunny might not enjoy playing the style of football that CW is promoting?

It is the same style that he excelled in
Well for six weeks before he became bored with it again 🙃

Agree. Don’t understand why this has happened yet.

It may just have something to do with Utd not having started a game with full backs and wide midfielders for four years. Also recruitment and development down to the Academy teams are all based on 3-5-2.

I also can't think of a CB partnership (i.e. Egan + ANother) that wouldn't get ripped apart by every Prem attack.
