Our system

Agree, first 5 minutes of second half we pressed and Basham got forward and we looked a different team...for 5 minutes

For our system to work:

  • We HAVE to have two attacking CBs
  • We HAVE to play with intensity
  • We HAVE to play for wins instead of draws

If any of those factors aren’t there, it doesn’t work.

He says the system is fine.

It's getting beyond annoying that he doesn't try 4 at the back

All this talk about systems... why? When the players have lost any sort of confidence and evidently thrown the towel in, any manager in this situation is fighting a losing battle.

I am sick of saying this but here goes again! We won't do anything if we keep punting the ball up in the hope of a flick on to nothing, we have to play it out from the back which yet again today created our only chances. Even when the 'target man' went off we persisted in this pathetic tactic. We have a non existent midfield because the ball always goes over their head, thought we had a chance to create something when we those three on for the last 20 mins, but no, lets keep playing the long ball. Utter shite!

We are living in fear and terrified of actually trying to play our normal game and for no reason (sounds familiar 🤔) we have given up before kick off

The system isn’t the problem...our inability to play the intended system with the current available personnel is.
Formation needs to change as our midfield is completely absent and overrun.

If you don’t have the personnel to play the system, then the system is the problem.

We must stop trying to play long ball football. This is not 1991 where going direct with a big strong lad up top can rattle the top teams and earn some scrappy points. Top Premier League defenders can deal with these tactics in their sleep. We don't even have a big strong lad up top ffs!

I'm not saying we try to emulate Norwich last season and play out from the back every time. But we need to get the ball on the deck and try to play at least some possession football. The players are fucked by half time because we've had 20-30% possession and are chasing chasing chasing all the time.

Wilder needs to show he's capable of changing it ASAP because I don't want to watch this style of football anymore, regardless of what division we're in.

hoorah!!! Lets go see him first thing Tomorrow!!!!

We’re both right really. We’re apparently committed to playing a system that our current crop of players aren’t capable of performing in. Personnel is the issue if we’re fully intent on persisting with the system - but there’s little we can do to address that issue, so the obvious thing would be to change the formation.
4-3-3, or 4-5-1 for me just to give us a fighting chance of gaining some control of midfield.

Our so called 'system' used to start with the ball at JOC feet at the edge of our area which allowed after a few passes for our overlapping centre backs to get into position, now it just goes over the top. You cant have overlapping anything if you don't have possession in the middle of the park!

We don't have the players for A.
Lockdown has fucked our fitness levels for B.
A + B mean it's increasingly difficult to attempt C.

We don't have the players to fundamentally change the system either.

Our problem is that concede 60-75% possession every game because our players aren't good enough to keep the ball when we have it.

It's not the system that's wrong because what ever system we played the result would be the same.

You can't set the tempo of any game, in any system, if you keep giving the ball to the opposition, and you can't compete for 90 minutes if you're forever chasing the ball and trying to get it back. Eventually you're always going to crack and concede a goal.

It amused me before the game when SKY showed a stat to say that we were working harder, in terms of yards covered, this season than we did last year when the reason is obvious. We can't get the bloody ball to play with it, and when we do we kick it straight back to the opposition.

The bottom line is that no matter what system we play the players we have aren't good enough and that's not aimed as a criticism, it is what it is.

I don't think that there is anyone not giving it their all but we just don't have the budget to buy players with the quality we need. Again, that's not a criticism of anyone it's just a fact of life.

If this had happened to us last season then nobody would have been surprised but because we performed so well pre covid expectations have been raised beyond the sensible.

After today I don't see a way back for us this season but I'm already looking forward to August and the prospect of 3.00pm Saturday kick offs and to quote raul the football being a two hour break in the day's drinking.

UTB.

Can you please elaborate on what our system is supposed to be
I can only assume that it’s the same system that we’ve used successfully for the past four years give or take the ‘flat three / quarterback / number 10’ tweaks to the midfield at various points.

There’s a reason that other teams have failed to replicate it: It’s really hard to do, and you need exactly the right type of players to do it - especially the centre backs. Ampadu, Berge, Jagielka (at LCB) and Robinson are not the right players for the system. Neither is having a target man up top (see Madine / McBurnie) as it just invites the players to hoof aimlessly. Get the wrong people in place and the system loses all of its value.

The midfielders need to move off the ball into positions the players on the ball can pass to for that to happen and this game they were statues

I’d try the midfield triangle again because clearly the flat 3’s not working if that’s isn’t more effective maybe try a Burnley style compact 442 back to basics hard to beat get crosses in use Moussett and Osborn as wingers Wilder used that system at Northampton just a suggestion

But my point is we never have the ball in the first place,

That's not true even when we try to play out from the back it ends up going to the wing and then going back or being hoofed to a striker because there's no one there to pass to because no one comes to give them self as an option lol

As it is now if the other team blocks passing lanes we just hoof it or go back rather than players moving off the ball to give the option to go through midfield

I don't want anyone injured but if McBurnie missed a couple with his shoulder then maybe we will be forced to be less direct and that might favour us.

Even in the games where McBurnie played a bit deeper, we just aimed it high above Burke's head instead. Half the time the long balls aren't even to anyone, just aimless punts

The key to our normal system isn't having two wide centre backs attacking, in League 1 you didn't see Ebanks-Landell bombing up the right wing like JOC on the other side, neither did Carter-Vickers the following year, it's only ever been Basham and O'Connell that do the consistent overlap on both sides.

The important part is having a midfield that contributes in moving the ball around and retaining possession to create overloads, whether that's with the old number ten or last year's flat 3, both worked to varying degrees, only really exposed by teams with wide players that pressed the wingbacks into a back 5.

4-3-3 or 4-5-1 still has the same problem that if the midfield fails to actually do anything worthwhile, we won't create anything and the fullbacks won't be able to get forward as much any time a team presses them deep, you're really just picking a different number of players to be isolated up front.
