Well we're just back from the lane where we were kindly allowed to attend and take part in this afternoons press conference....
Micky Adams has been confirmed as the new manager of Sheffield United with a two-and-a-half year contract. Alan Cork, the last Blades player to score at Wembley, has come in as his number two and the pair take charge with immediate effect. As confirmed by Trevor Birch, Sam Ellis and John Carver will be leaving the club.
It was a bit of a last minute thing that we were called down to the Lane. Chris Steer, the Football Club Chairman confirmed that the decision to appoint Adams had been reached within the last 48 hours.
A few key quotes:
Micky Adams on Alan Cork: "He's the best centre-forward coach around".
Alan Cork: "It's great to be back. Once you're a Blade, you're always a Blade. I've been working with Gary Megson so I was on the phone to him this morning to say the best club in town is on its way back."
Chris Steer: "Teamwork, from the top of the football club to the bottom, is the answer to United's problems. Micky Adams is passionate, with clear goals and is the man for the job."
Chris Steer, when asked for a message for the fans - "Back him". His overall message was that of teamwork and that includes the fans, he understands sometimes we might not have much to shout about, but that we need to be together to drive the club forward.
Micky Adams on style of play: "We want a winning style. We want to get the ball in the box as soon as we can without taking that extra touch. I want passion from the players and a pride in wearing the shirt."
Micky Adams on a message to the players: "I haven't met them yet, but my message to them will be 'let's have a go'."
We also had a quick chat with Alan Cork following the press conference, to summarise, here's what he said:
"It's great to be back, once you've been here before, you are then forever a Blade, there's also still a few around I know and recognise".
He can't wait to sample the atmosphere again, says that when the Kop is in voice there is nothing like it and thats what we want back.
He's mentioned to his lad before his visits to the lane to make sure he gives a listen before kick off, to listen to the song, that's special.
Says it will of course be hard work, but then it's never any different anywhere else.
He said we've got games coming up thick and fast and need to start work straight away at a difficult time.
Overall, just seemed happy to be back and chomping at the bit to get out there and get started.
Oh, and the beard, the first question I asked him... It depends how we get on against Villa and he'll see... but he's not sure his Mrs will agree to it - though as I recall, he said that last time
