As my dad did a bit of work for Davy whilst he was at Firth Brown, he took this as his permission to park the car there for United home games Al through the 1970s, in that very car park.
That was in the days before parking extortion, now there would be a little sign hidden somewhere and you would come back to a demand for £60 🙁

As I understand it , as a Catholic you would have had to tell the priest about that when you went to confess your sins . I bet that was a bit embarrassing .

“ What sins do you have to confess , my son ?”

“ Well Father , when you were giving your sermon on Christmas Eve , I was finger fucking a lass from Notre Dame on the back row .” 😂

Well I didn't quite go as far as that.

Very hard to bend down that far with a long, thin, lit candle in your hand with a weak spot in the middle, especially when the lass in question was wearing a whalebone bra!:D :D :D

Wasn't Dennis Finnegan at one time the organist at St Marie's RC Cathedral Church at some point?

There were three Fenoughty brothers as far as I remember from my time at De La Salle,

Tom was the eldest I believe and there was Mick and I think the youngest was Nick, or it could be the other round - such a long time ago. They could definitely all play a bit!

Wasn't one of the others also on United's books at some point?

Talking of St Marie's I do remember one midnight mass, back in the late 60s, getting up to something, that was not at all holy, with a Notre Dame lass at the back of the assembled congregation.

If I remember correctly, Tom and Mick went on to manage Matlock Town, for a good number of years.
I played against De La Salle a number of times, in the South Yorkshire Amateur League. I always enjoyed it there, great bar afterwards. Originally De La Salle O B’s had a bar in Beauchief Hall, later the owner of the Hall, paid for a new stone built club house adjacent to the hall.
I think just to get them out of the main building.

Beauchief was where we had our weekly games days. I played rugby union for Salle on Saturdays and captained Clitheroe House 2ndXI at football on games days. We had some decent talent in rugby and football. Ian Holmes played for the Blades and my mate Dave Smith played for Huddersfield in the old 1st division. The last time I saw him was in the twilight of his career playing in the FA Cup at Maine Road for Altrincham. They lost 6-0

This might be the match you’re thinking. These are the photos I have from the Palace match:

I forgot to add a detail for the cricket enthusiasts. The first page has the picture of players throwing snowballs, with a caption referring to controversies going on at the time around bowlers being accused of throwing. By coincidence(?), the 2nd page has a photo of Hodgy and Joe Shaw with 2 young South African triallists, one of whom is Cyril Mitchley, later to be an international umpire. I add below an extract from an interview with him, recalling without fondness his time at the Lane:

Been going through a cupboard and found some memories..

Perhaps some of those with short memories turning on the club, should reflect on our history and some of the places we’ve been!!

3-2 down with a few minutes left and then two great headers by Mike Trusson !

These were issued at school to try and encourage kids to get involved with a free South stand ticket. I’d never been on South stand up til then, always on Kop or occasional John St.23DE92DF-7C46-4468-AA4A-C677EC59AB65.jpeg

50p increase over three years!

And a lower league.

Oh the glory years of Div 4. Great apprenticeship for a 14 year old!

I was in the John Street Stand for the Rochdale match.

Hatton was brilliant and promotion was virtually assured by the 3-1 win, albeit it wasn't officially confirmed until the following night when Peterborough failed to beat Hereford.

The memory that was seared into my mind from that night, however, was the announcement on the PA system as we were making our way out of the stand after the match, that HMS Sheffield had been hit in the Falklands. For a youngster, the fact that it was the Sheffield made it feel personal.

Remember walking up Woodhead Road after the match and a guy was running in the opposite direction telling everyone that the HMS Sheffield had been hit.
