He has to go

I think the players need to take some more responsibility for this. We’ve paid big fees for these players and they have not performed in the big moments. If we had taken our chances in previous games and not made stupid mistakes like Egan’s red card or missed penalty’s or Mcburnies poor efforts on goal...then at least we could sit on 4 or 5 points at this point and think, well, at least we’ve got those out of the way

We can accept that we’re going to struggle and be a team that will be in a relegation battle, but at the moment we’re not even putting up a fight.

1 point from 8 matches is beyond bad. It’s Derby County recording breaking form at the moment. If we were on say 5 or 6 points from 8 matches, we wouldn’t be having this conversation.
True I agree that things have got to improve & really hope that they do soon, but I’m sure that it wouldn’t have been as bad on here if this sort have start had happened last season.

That’s not what I’m saying. I’m saying you can get proven PL goal scorers for 20m
You may well do if you are incredibly lucky and the club is a good pull for the player. It’s what this proven goal scorer then costs you in wages and if you are lucky enough to get a bargain you won’t be lucky enough to be paying him peanuts.

I never mentioned sacking Wilder on an earlier thread just if people would start asking the question and got a crazy reaction. To save time scrolling through the thread the following informed responses will not agree with you....

Best of luck with the reasoned debate coming your way ;)🤣

For what it’s worth I think Wilder should and will stay. We will stay up top of a religation division of 5 teams
Glad you agree that Wilder will keep us up and will still be around. 😉

Didn’t watch tonight’s game so can’t comment on it. Better run of games coming up, we should win our next couple of games, get our confidence back. Still a lot of games and point to play for.

Like who? And they may be unknown to us but how do you know what wages these players are on? How much do you think the likes of Danny Ings are on? Leicester have spent a lot of money since winning the prem. the simple fact is even half decent championship players are going for stupid money. Every player we sign is a gamble simple as that.
The obvious ones are

Mahrez bought for 500k sold to City for $67 mill

Kante bought for $9 mill sold to Chelsea for $35 mill

Fair enough.

In answer to your other question, I think it's clear Wilder had made his mind up that he wanted to sign players from the Championship with something to prove. Not only is that a big gamble but it's an expensive gamble. It can also pay off if you get it right.

My main point is that, I dont think we have been savvy enough in terms of which market we're shopping in. It isn't for me to pinpoint which players we should have signed but there is clear evidence that there is better value for money in markets outside of the UK. I'll again use Berge as an example. If he's English, you can double his price tag straight away but he's by far the best player I've seen in a United shirt....(I'm not an old twat you see ;) )

I would agree with you our signings have been a gamble in the PL, but thats where we are atm
McBurnie according to his goal tally in the Championship was the next best bet to Maupay who I would have preferred. Brewster again (I know only half a season) was probably the best bet considering his goal tally and his pedigree at Liverpool. To sign a proven PL goalscorer is going to cost you in excess of £30m plus mega wages I know Wilson who signed for Newcastle was around £20m but hes apparently on £100k per week and Watkins from Brentford was over £30m and would have still been somewhat of a gamble

I do think we should have explored the foreign market but our rapid rise from L1 to the PL means we didnt really have a foreign scouting network we should have just followed the Brentford guys around
Probably Wilder has been somewhat out of his depth in the Transfer Market since we have been in the PL but this sort of money we are spending is very new experience to him, hes dealing with multi million pound footballers not the likes of Chris Hussey and Samir Carruthers who hes was able to bomb aout of the club when he realised they werent good enough

And you could say the same for Fleck signed for nothing touted for Arsenal last season and the same for JOC.

I'm pretty sure you dont sign an unknown player for 9m, unproven yes but not unknown.

I think it’s a combination of things, spending a large amount of money, the results being terrible (1 point from 33 is going to worry even the most optimistic Blade) and a lack of fight/poor attacking performances.

We all want Wilder to turn it round, but I’ll admit my faith is being tested massively. We’re Sheffield United and I don’t care who we’re playing, we should give 100% and fight for the points.

It just feels like 3 defeats against Liverpool, Man City and Chelsea were accepted before a ball was kicked because we expect to lose and have a ready made excuse, that is very hard to take.

How are comparisons groundless? You questioned the Prince's ability to back the manager. Wilder has persuaded him to overspend on his budget already. I agree we have some catching up to do in terms of other teams in the division, which is exactly the reason it was such a gamble to pay a premium on players from the Championship who are unproven at this level.

You've suggested numerous times that Wilder has been backed. By Premier League standards he clearly hasn't. We're where we should be: a relegation battle. Sorry, scratch that, we should be back in the Championship or relegated last season. Comparisons to previous Blades boards are pointless as the world of football finances is completely different. If we're only going to spend a proportion of our TV income the choice is:

1) Spend almost all of it on wages ala Burnley. Problematic if you go down as you'll likely carry these wages (or a higher percentage) as you've signed established performers at the level. These players will likely have a higher age profile which may limit resale value.

2) Invest a large proportion of the budget on young players on relatively low wages with the scope to improve and be sold on (See United). This is a risky strategy but should somewhat insulate you from the consequences of relegation. This will limit the markets you can shop in as wages talk very loudly in football. Lower leagues and unfashionable leagues e.g. Belgium may have to be explored. People rave about Berge now, but most of this board thought he was shit last season (not moi btw;)). Trying to integrate 5-6 players from the minor European leagues every season would be extremely difficult.

3) Bank the money and accept relegation ala Norwich. Pay off debts and invest in infrastructure etc.

4) Find a sugar daddy that will make you competitive on wages and fees. This requires between 50-100 million of sugar daddy investment per season. See Bournemouth, Everton, Wolves etc.

Lunacy to even consider getting rid of him. It has taken a perfect storm of shit to put us in trouble. We're ahead of our curve under him; it was always likely to be undone by a few injuries as we simply haven't been able to make up for three years of no investment with two years of minimal investment at Premier League level. Go again next season with the parachute payments and the younger group we've accumulated. The club is in an infinitely stronger position regardless of league status due to one man: Chris Wilder. He's probably the best manager you will ever see at United.
P.S. anybody noticed the volume of accounts with a few posts in many years suddenly surfacing and calling for his head? Anybody would think it's pigs come from under their rocks after a four years.
There's at least one Fowl on the wind up amongst that lot.

If he goes who do we honestly get? I think we will go down but would you want anyone other than wilder next season in the championship?

It's hard as if we dont improve and struggle and keep losing...a lot would say still keep him and he's the best man to take us up and he has a lot if credit etc. I think like that and the notion of sacking him is bonkers.

However us and him would hate for him to end up being really disliked and the relationship turned really sour. It's his club and city. Imagine if we were still in this position in 2 months. It would turn really toxic. People say it wouldn't but It would.

I think if we were still in this position and barely got another point or won by January he'd just jack it in or they'd mutually part ways with a financial severance. Seriously. I might be wrong.

I can't see us losing week after week and going down with so few points and him just hanging round and coming back in the Championship. Might be me.

Billy as a player/manager like they did it in the good old days. 😂

It is seriously concerning to me that, illness aside, McB & Brew would have been our front pairing today.

Wilder obviously believes this is both the way forward in the “now” and a look at what our future holds to boot.

If that is the answer gaffer, than I have to genuinely challenge your understanding of the question !!.

Apologies.

I know that’s tongue in cheek but the people who are being genuine would not be able to give an answer that anyone would agree is better than wilder.

I agree with you there, if we go down with a very low points total e.g. less than 20, it’s going to be very difficult to just flip a switch and turn a losing team into a winning one.

Who do we get in then?

We're done if Wilder goes. Our squad isn't good, that's the issue. Bring someone else in and they're not going to make our players good enough.
If he gets sacked I'll definitely put money on us going down.
