diminishing interest

Completely agree. The sanitised, lockdown-football, plus our awful form means I have not watched MOTD at all so far this season.
I’ve not watched it because we haven’t won yet. I watch it about 3 times when we’ve won. Not watched a set of highlights apart from the games we’ve scored in either 😂

derekacorah isn't bollocks, since project restart it's been the same...and we were challenging European spots back then. Not watched any none blades related game, motd, any podcast, Soccer saturday since the restart last season.

It's shit.
General football has always been shit. As the OP was in Blades Chat I’m commenting on football involving the Blades. It’s worse but would be less moaning if we had more than 1 point from 9 games.

Nah I enjoy football of all levels, if it's on, I watch it generally.

Until this shitty virus turned up.

We all agree that not being allowed to attend the game is wank. We also know that our form is wank.

Add them up and people have had enough, personally even though we are shit right now I look forward to every game. Something is better than nothing.

When the Champions League started allowing more than one team from a country in, 97?98? football became bullshit theatre. For all those saying it's lost its shine, become boring, prima donnas, too many rule changes, VAR, crowds, no crowds, all-seater, whatever, I think I agree entirely.

That said, I'll be opening up a deposit account, where if anyone has any loyalty points they want to drop off, just pop them in there for me will you. Thanks a lot. UTB

Sounds way more exciting than watching the Blades at the mo, but how do you carry all those clubs whilst cycling? And are you allowed to stop before hitting the ball or is it more like bike polo?
You just need one of those little trailor attachments you sarky git 🤣

Plus it saves renting a buggy.

I’ll throw my two penneth in as well; agree with most points on here. My streams have packed in early in both the last two games (dont have BT- pay enough for Sky already) and have ended up listening to Radio Sheff. They do a decent job, but its just not the same. The Man City game was the first home game I havent seen either in person or on TV/stream during lockdown in about 15 years. In fact, due to the fact we never play at 3pm on Saturdays anymore, I’ve been watching a film on Saturday afternoons. Thats my new ritual. And I’ve been enjoying it. Normally I’d have stuck Jeff Stelling on, but they've ruined that by putting Tim Sherwood on it, and mainly I don't give two fucks about any other games (I have enjoyed a chuckle at a few recent Championship results, mind). All together, I’ve actually watched about an hours worth of non Blades games all season. I just don't care. The only non United game I’ve watched fully all season was the Stocksbridge Park Steels game they put on the red button.... was quite good actually.

The big worry football will have is that while people are being locked out of grounds and priced out of telly viewing, they’ll find other, cheaper things to do; new hobbies, new habits and rituals, etc. A lot will go straight back, but I bet a lot wont either.

Football died after euro 96 ....Birds started going and it just became popular, this is when it was taken away from your working class male .
I will apologise for being a bit of a sexist pig ,but I like my dinner in the microwave when I roll in at all hours of a sat night/ Sunday morning

I was priced out of football when we were promoted to the PL. I don't really miss it, even if I saved up for a ticket I doubt I would actually go. It could go on something else which I deem more important or which will give me a better value for money.

I now live overseas and have done for some time.

Despite living in London for a decade I took in around 30 matches a season.

Even living overseas, the whole time United were playing, I listened or watched when possible and always followed on the net.

Since we got promoted I pretty much haven't missed a minute of any game.

I must confess though once we got locked down, I went from missing football to just doing other things. Then when it came back without the fans, especially that first game, it felt so watered down. Like something that was an obligation for the teams rather than the enjoyment and thrill of entertaining.

I still watch the matches, and I'm immediately disappointed if we lose, but it doesn't dominate my weekend like it used to. I'd adapted to doing other things.

I'm finding it difficult to adapt back a little as the thing we so loved isn't the thing that has returned.

Then those cocksuckers in charge of Man U and Liverpool with their greed at all cost, showing their true colours, regardless of the environment, went and put another nail in it. Is this what the top division is? 14 clubs meant to be eternally grateful to the so called Big 6? Not that most of the Arrogant 6 can even hold a candle to someone like Clough's Forest.

I think someone said the journey to the PL was better than the destination. They are probably right. Certainly the promotion season will live far longer in the memory than any of the lockdown football we have seen.

I hope the fans can come back soon because at the moment it is a real turn off.

Increasingly treating PL like I do/did with champion's league - quick check on Livescore (regardless of if on tv) at most. Altho I genuinely have zero interest in that these days and couldn't tell you who's playing unless Rashford is involved and have 5live on in the morning.

Without being able to actually support the Blades, stick me in the column: wake me up til this shit is over. Snooze.

Totally get you. Post lockdown I've become so detached from the game. I used to live for football almost, watched most games, played sundays. Now I don't play anymore, can't attend the matches, the games are soulless and I find myself not interested anymore.

I haven't watched Soccer Saturday, MOTD or any other games not involving us. No european ones, cup finals, nothing. I just really can't be bothered with it anymore, it's no longer entertaining.

My vastly diminishing love of football is probably parallelled with my complete disinterest in life at the moment. It's a horrible world we're currently living in and at times I don't even want to be part of it anymore.

This is exactly where I am in my outlook on life, not watched one minute of MOTD this season, nor have I watched the EFL on Quest to have a laugh at the latest state of the pigs. I haven't watched a European game for years either. Away from football everything you do is such a faff about for ever diminishing returns of enjoyment. The wife wanted a few days in New York for her 60th but can't do that now, got a holiday booked for Lanzarote I doubt we will get there either, I cant even take her for a meal without booking a table first, there are no little surprises in life anymore you just cant do anything on the spur of the moment everything has to be planned with military precision and I hate it. Went online yesterday to buy her a pressie for Xmas what a fuck about that was payment does not go through get an error message try again no problem, check emails for confirmation nothing check again 5 mins later to find out they have charged me for two items grrrrr. Anyone tried cancelling an order from Curry's? try the web chat after 10mins it is "I'm not qualified to deal with this" go to this page which turns out to be the one I started on, try web chat again sent to a different page, told to go to another page and fill a form out ................ yay my order has been cancelled but it could take 14days to get my money back FFS. This is the levels of incompetence whoever you deal with now, does not matter where you go or who you deal with the world is fucked. So no it is not just football, I just can't be arsed with anything just now.

Wow what a miserable thread. Don't deny that watching non Blades matches is a lot more yawn inducing. Watching Blades is still my highlight of the week. All my lights go on and I am totally absorbed yelling at the screen. Some brilliant moments against Liverpool like when Ossie nearly scored with a flying volley. I can't just give up on this team I've supported all my life. Also watching motd2 interesting to see that 2 of the 7 candidates for October goal of the month were against United... makes you think. Up the fucking Blades.

Im sure Im not alone in saying the draw of behind closed doors football diminishes every week
not because we only have 1 point , all football has lost its punch
not just football, tv shows with no audiences are just as drab
But my only concern is the dearth of passion in the game
All the cream of football are playing in an atmosphere similar to a game on pitch 7 of concord park on a foggy sunday morning
my first recollection of going to Bramall Lane was the noise , the tangible atmosphere of hope and expectation oozing out of every fan
We are getting pasteurized football devoid of flavour
The longer it goes on the more sterile it becomes

I truly worry interest will wane and effect football for years to come
You've just about called it right there BTL what we all have got to accept and quickly, is life will not be the same dare I say, for some years to come.
Our grandparents / parents had to endure WW2, six years that changed their lives for years, similar is happening now. I'm over 70, going to the Lane, having a pint with my ever finishing circle of friends, going to the shops, holiday, any event in the future will not be the same for any of us. There's not a lot any of us on here can do about the current situation except keep the faith, the Bladesmen will always be there, might be a while but we'll recover.
And by the way, in Wilder we trust.
Sorry about the doom and gloom

Certainly a lack of empathy on here in pursuit of self proclaimed Bladey status

Whats just happened with them cheating dirty fuckers across the city doesn`t help with your faith in the football authorities or football in general. FFS they were talking about relegating the fuckers at first now its a 6 point penalty instead of 12, games bent.

Agree totally - just WOW - there are some really sad people around.

Anyway...............Shit happens - this just happens to be massive shit.

To put things in perspective a little.

My 90 year old mother (she's extremely well for her age) has been out of the house TWICE since the original lockdown in March.

I am going over this afternoon to take her two weekly shop from Aldi and at the same time to take her out of the house for the third time because the on call nurse is so busy that she can't come to my mums house and give her the flu jab.

NOW THAT IS REAL SHIT.- three times since last March. It won't be just my mum, I'm sure many others on here have similar stories.

Whilst we have a major problem created by the fucking Chinese (who appear to be doing very well out of all this btw) my mum thinks she will DIE if she goes out of the house by the general noise and (some) nonsense created by the increasing doom mongers that is the BBC and other media outlets........what was it the other day - 4,000 deaths if we aren't careful...........which proved to be outdated data!

As for football - As some of us have written before - we won't be going to a ground this season - so just get used to it.

The world will get back to normal - so will football, but it will be a long haul with changes that some of us will see for years to come - some will die before the whole "problem" gets back to something like normal - although COVID is here to stay apparently so we'll just have to hope "the world" finds a pill, a jab, or anything that in effect allows us to get it and then (hopefully) get rid of it just as quick.

As for diminishing interest - not all all - if watching United on the tele box or an internet feed is the only way, then so be it.

born a Blade, live a Blade, die a Blade - there's zero diminished interest here - fucking grow a pair for what the real problems are.

UTB - 100%

Very, very well said indeed. Keep the faith.

I had a season ticket for 21 years at the "Lane" which ended when i found out that when i was watching United (and sometimes away) play at home - she was playing away! the ensuing divorce, court cases, wrongful arrest but mostly lack of money (she cleaned me out),
I just stopped going, I lived in the countryside and began to appreciate the stuff around me, sat on the riverbank of the Trent with a beer in my hand on a glorious summers day jus felt better than spending all my Saturday getting to the match and then back home again just seemed a waste of my weekend, that was in the days of "Warnock" the football was dire and i was losing interest, (some comparisons to the stuff being served up at the moment under CW) so yes i was one of those that found better things to do.
Having said that, I now live in in sunny Spain and haven't missed a minute of every game "The mighty Blades" have played in the last two years, and i get it in glorious HD on my 42" TV thanks to the Saudis (or whoever) who do all the streaming, also Sky/BBC when we are on every other week like last year, (of course we are on every week currently thanks to Covid).

The most relevant thing i suppose is that I have retained a love of the game, and importantly my love of "the mighty Blades" that will never diminish, no matter how much the football authorities continue to destroy the game, (unless they bring Warnock/Bassett back!

I do love it when i mange to get back to "the Lane" stay at the Copthorne (when it was open), revisit my roots in "Pitsmoor" or what's left of it! and catch up with what's left of my family.

While we are on that subject i think CW is talking to Bassett to often, taking a leaf out out of his book of how to play durgid football.

99.9% of my passion for SUFC has been formed from purely going to the game.

I'm similar. I rarely watch a game now unless we are playing. VAR, many players falling over when an opposition player is near them and overpaid "superstars " are just some of the reasons. And is the product worth the money ?

Same for me on both counts.

At least these last few seasons it hasn't been a case of (30 minutes before ko), "Right, lads. Stay in pub or go to match?) ;)

I'm sorry to hear that, I hope that is just a momentary notion.

I do understand as I feel very similarly at times but I do believe we are past the halfway mark.

Come March/April, we'll be nearing the end of the tunnel, IMHO.

🤞🤞🤞

I know precisely what you mean

I wouldn't say my interest in Sheffield United has diminished as much as I feel disconnected from the club and football in general.

Watching on the Television is absolute and utter shite. I've also learned just how much being a supporter going to the games enriches the whole experience, and watching a match on the Television without supporters just shows you can't have one without the other.
