The previous two times we have been in this division and been relegated seemed to correspond with the gap between the divisions widening. This was mainly due to TV money increasing substantially. And both times it took us more than a decade to get back.

The Project Big Picture fiasco has shown what the top table intends for the domestic game in this country and where the serious money currently sits & where they intend for it to sit in the future.

Rightly or wrongly the PL is the only place to be & our position in it needed to be protected at all costs. At all costs.

Let’s forget all this ‘running the club the right way’ & ‘spunking munneh’ nonsense, it makes us come across a plucky, flat capped northern amateurs in a professional competition, trying to do things on the cheap with a mindset from the 70’s.

Money needed finding and spending on strengthening the 16 with proven talent and it hasn’t. Penny wise, pound foolish.

And people are now saying ‘well if we go down we’ll be in a strong position & have the players to come back’.

No we won’t. The good players will go, just like they do at every other relegated team.

If we can’t seem to currently run the club with the expenditure of an ambitious championship level team on PL money, then we sure as hell aren’t going to do it on championship money.

If we go down this time, we aren’t coming back.

I don't think people are being overly critical it's just where we are as a club given how quickly we've come up.

We've spent more than I expected and brought in some good players (and the right kind of players)

I'm surprised we didn't use an additional loan and we were obviously trying to bring someone else in.

We're just an injury crisis short of guaranteed relegation. That's the worry. It might never happen but there's the possibility it could. Difficult to do anything quickly about that but suprised we didn't see another couple of faces here temporarily.

People need to be realistic though mate. We aren’t rich and even if we spend more there’s a risk of relegation. I’d rather spend within our means and risk relegation, safe in the knowledge we will not go bust, than grossly overspend. Every season there are a good 10 clubs which I wouldn’t be surprised to see any of them go down.

Why is it assumed that players better than the ones we have would choose to come to us rather than other teams ?
It is not always possible to buy everything that you want, even if the money is available.

Fair point but a loan of two is not going to bust the bank and if it's the difference between staying up and going down....

I would have just liked a bit more in midfield. We don't really have a plan b.

Some people on here just beggar belief! We’ve not sold anyone, so our net outlay over two seasons is £120m. Let me repeat that, £120m! We could never have even dreamed of that sort of outlay a few seasons ago. The squad is stronger. Replacing JOC like for like is never going to happen and the same goes for Henderson! Some people need to give their head a wobble.

My issue is that we knew about what we needed for months and yet addressed it hear what wilder said we missed the boat he said we didn't expect teams to spend

Its not really a different perspective, its telling us what we are acutely aware of 'we overperfromed LAST season'.

The big question is what happens if we perform in line with expectations this season where does that leave us? Hopefully still in this division and with the likes of Berge and Brewster having joined along with promising youngsters Lowe, Bigle and Burke too we should be OK.

But.make no mistake to survive in this league you have to strengthen every season.
