Smalling was fantastic at Roma, would 100% have him in our back 3 without JOC. Unfortunately, even if Man Utd paid half his wages we'd be paying 35k pw
I agree, would be a fantastic loan signing for us but Man Utd are trying to offload some players and our structured wage bill will be a stumbling block as I'm sure there's clubs out there who would pay the majority if not all his wages. Fulham for example have said they need cb's and obviously are willing to spend big on wages. I'm sure things would have been different if covid hadn't effected our budgetBut wages and a season loan fee totalling say £3.5m is small change for a player of Smallings ability.......other option would be £5m plus (probably) on the lad from Huddersfield......I know which one I would go for.
On the face of it that's right, but if we have someone come in on larger wages than much of the rest of the team, won't that cause some inbalance in the changing room? I'm not advocating a flat-rate for all players like some kind of Hammer And Sickle FC, but the uplift in wages surely has to be a gradual thing? But wages and a season loan fee totalling say £3.5m is small change for a player of Smallings ability.......other option would be £5m plus (probably) on the lad from Huddersfield......I know which one I would go for.

Covid in Sheffield or London or Rome, decisions, decisions mmmmmmmm?I agree, would be a fantastic loan signing for us but Man Utd are trying to offload some players and our structured wage bill will be a stumbling block as I'm sure there's clubs out there who would pay the majority if not all his wages. Agree to an extent but we have to accept that if we want to stay in the big boys league then difficult decisions will have to be made and yes, some players who have served us so well on our journey will have to accept at some point that things move on.
Harsh but realistic, I'm sure the owners will want to do all they can to extend our stay rather than worry about hurt feelings.
Fair enough but is Smalling on loan the person we want to be the figurehead of this new wage structure?
I don’t disagree that eventually we’re going to have to up our transfer fees and wage structure if we want to compete, but I don’t agree that we should do so to get a defender whose career can most kindly be described as average, on a season-long loan.
