Buy back clauses

There is one other thing to note re these clauses which isn’t mentioned in the thread as far as I can see: you cannot force the player who is subject to the clause to move back if he doesn’t want to. That may give one or other club a damages claim, but they cannot compel the player to move.

Shows how crazy football has become. Can you imagine this happening in any other situation - eg you buy a house for the asking price but the seller is allowed to buy it back if it appreciates, without having to give you a refund if it falls in value. The world has gone mad!!

There is often an uplift clause in land transactions. Seller sells for X with an uplift clause of say 25%. Once the land is developed and valued at Y then the seller gets 25% extra. Not quite the same but it does go on.

I like this buy back idea if it means we get a player whose goals may probably go a long way to help us retain our Premier League status for the next 2 seasons. That alone is worth several squillion quid.

And don't forget, just because there's a buy back clause in the contract doesn't mean Liverpool will necessarily want to buy him back. They could well be where they are now and be blessed with some of the best strikers in the world and not see him as an improvement over those. The other thing is, he might not want to leave - once he's had one of those "Sheffield fishcakes" (you know, the ones made out of 2 thick slices of potato in batter, with no fish in them) and a bit of Hendo's, he'll likely be smitten.

My understanding of a buy back clause is that IF we decide to sell or someone else comes in with a bid, ‘Pool have to be given first dibs at the prestated price. I don’t think they can just say ‘sell him to us now’. What if we were pushing them for the title and he had scored 43 of our 46 goals? January window comes around. They could offer him squillions to jump ship.

Buying a house with a clause that says the seller can buy it back for double the price in the future sounds like a much better deal than rent actually.
Not if you’ve spent a fortune on maintaining / improving the property, the sale makes you homeless and it would cost 3 times as much to buy a replacement.

Unfortunately not - I could live with that.

Just thinking of the players ,we have had direct from Liverpool , Rush ,Thompson , Woodburn etc have we had a good one ?

Rush came from Newcastle and he'd been at DirtyLeeds before that.

Thompson was finished and knew it. I hated him as he wouldn't put his body on the line, but to be fair, he did organise our back 4 and we stayed up.

Ryan Flynn and Gary Ablett both started at Liverpool, but had moved to other clubs before we got them. I can't think of anyone else in the last 50 years...

Silent Blade ?
Revolution ?

John Newby on loan. He was hopeless.

City did it with the midfielder at Villa. Chelsea also did it with Ake I think but decided not to buy him back.
It is a decent idea. If Liverpool end up paying us £40m for him in 2 years time, I’d imagine he’ll have scored plenty of goals in a blades shirt in the prem

Exactly. Why we are squirming over a buy back clause is beyond me. If Liverpool, the elite team of football currently, want to buy him back then he must be performing at Liverpool levels for Sheffield United, which means in the interim he's improved our team immensely. I suppose the actual buy back figure will be the issue. I imagine we are putting a very high amount on the table which is putting Liverpool off, but it really needs to be a high figure. If Liverpool wanted to sign a new top striker for their first team from anywhere else two years from now, I imagine they would have to pay some where between £70M-£100M for that player.

So if I offered you a deal where you bought me house for 100k then you spent another 100k on it. But I can buy it back for 400k in 2 years, you'd turn that down?

You could then go buy another cracking property for 400k...

Need to sign the player before we bother about this!!!???

That just goes into the calculation of the prices. You'd have a set amount you could invest into maintenance/improvement before you were losing on the deal. Whereas with rent you pay the amount required to maintain the property + profit for the landlord and then have nothing to show when they want the property back.

To make the football analogy, think Henderson. We've invested time and money into a good player but never stood to make a financial profit off his sale. Brewster would be a bigger initial investment but with the promise of either profit or the asset.

I'll grant it's not ideal, but presumably if we don't want the buy back clause Liverpool are just going to raise the asking price. Without being in on the negotiations and our financial situation I guess we can't have too strong an opinion.

The risk there is that you can`t get a property as good as the one you have just sold (which may actually be worth 700k, but you have to sell it for 400k) for that 400k.

I'm generally in agreement with others - as long as the price is high enough that the player must have been performing really well for us, it seems like the only risk (as with every player you buy) is that he ends up being not worth the initial investment.

Whilst this is clearly relevant to the Brewster situation, based on press reports, its the concept that I object to rather thsn the specifics of the deal. Arrangements such as this, allowing teams to buy shed loads of youngsters and loan them all out, and subsidised wage arrangements for loan players are all mechanisms which allow the wealthy clubs to protect their elite status. if the Premier League genuinely wants to improve, it should ban them all!

I have just done that on a house. I said I'll give x amount, which is somewhat less than the seller wants, technically is a temporary building due to some planning permission issues. And said if I come to sell in a 5 year period, I'll sell it back for the exact same price.

I have a renter in place for as long as she lives, so I'm probably not selling in such a time. If it appreciates I still make the rental income. And buy back price will be inflated based on necessary maintenance costs in the interim.

I've loaded the contract in my favour. The seller can use the funds now, rather than wait years or never to sell.

Win, win.

Not sure why you find so unlikely?

Perhaps in countries where property inflation is Guaranteed it wouldn't work I guess?

The difference in your scenario is that you are the buyer, not the seller, and it's your choice on whether to sell. You loaded the contract in your favour and haven't given the seller the option to re-purchase, only to share in the upside. In a football sense it's the selling club that has the choice and the buying club can't do anything about it, so they don't achieve true ownership of the player, unless he fails to develop to the selling club's satisfaction.

Went mad a long time ago. Such clauses existed in the 70s

I guess it’s also an incentive for the lad to play well for us.

Oh aye, just the incentive we want. “I don’t wanna play for Sheff Utd for the rest of my career they’re wank, so I need to start banging them in so I can go back to Liverpool.”

Edited it for you. Not everyone is a blade. Sometimes we need to take off the red and white tinted specs and accept we are a stepping stone for players.. I’d rather be a stepping stone than a destination club.. players wanting a pay day. I want players coming in giving 110% smashing it for us and earning a big money move away.

Who cares so long as he starts “banging them in.”
