Does anyone know how these are supposed to work, ie is it purely a case of agreeing the fee that the player will be re-purchased for if he returns or does it give the selling club the right to re-purchase the player at any time as long as they pay the agreed amount? The latter surely can’t be allowed but the former could be rendered worthless by selling to another team, so it’s hard to see why its exclusion would be a deal breaker

Clause will depend on terms agreed between the two clubs. Normally a period is inserted whereby the selling club can't buy back. So in a four year contract could be the first 2 years not allowed to buy back. Selling Club can then buy back in the remaining contract period for the price agreed. Agreement on the the actual terms are probably the issue at the moment. Brewster will be our player but the back buy allows Liverpool the right to purchase him at an agreed point in the future should they so wish.

It can broadly be whatever you want it to be so long as everyone is in agreement.

This but I’d hope it only becomes active after a set period e.g two seasons time.

It’s quite common abroad. Real Madrid do it with a lot of players, including the full-back who’s just gone to Spurs I believe. Can’t recall another instance between two English clubs though.

City did it with the midfielder at Villa. Chelsea also did it with Ake I think but decided not to buy him back.
It is a decent idea. If Liverpool end up paying us £40m for him in 2 years time, I’d imagine he’ll have scored plenty of goals in a blades shirt in the prem

Shows how crazy football has become. Can you imagine this happening in any other situation - eg you buy a house for the asking price but the seller is allowed to buy it back if it appreciates, without having to give you a refund if it falls in value. The world has gone mad!!

Didn't we agree this with Man City for Bryan

I suppose the analogy with a house is that someone sells you a £400k house for £250k but you agree to sell it back for £500k in 5 years if they want it back.

It's not totally 1 sided is it?

Great analogy. We'd all take that deal wouldn't we.

Just thinking of the players ,we have had direct from Liverpool , Rush ,Thompson , Woodburn etc have we had a good one ?

What happens if he loves it here and doesn't want to go back?
Doesn’t have to go, Liverpool can activate the buy back but he still has to agree terms with them etc. Think of it more of a 1 club release clause

Lots of buy back and pre-emption clauses in the business world, including property.

So in theory Liverpool could activate the clause, give us 40 million and sell him on if a third club offered them 80 million?
yes they could, or i would imagine said club who wanted him for £80m would approach us first, we would then have to ask L’pool if they wanted to activate their first refusal, which i would imagine they would, or alternatively they would seek to settle an amount with us to cancel the buy back clause (let’s say £40m?), Brewster would then be transferred directly from us to the club involved

Fat chance of this happening though unless fees really do skyrocket between now and then.... apart from VVD, is there any other non-top 6 teams who have engaged in this kind of money for a transfer?

We will be lucky to get £40m for any of our players tbh, £40m really does seem good value for all sides involved, bare in mind at the £80m+ mark we are lookint at world class CL proven young players like Sancho and Haaland

What happens if he is worth more than £40 million but because Liverpool are so heavy with strikers they don't want him.

Can we sell him to Barcelona for £100 million instead

In that scenario, no, but the noises coming out of Liverpool don’t suggest that they are selling him cheap, more that they think he will be worth a lot more in the future.

But pre-emption rights normally relate to new shares or property, not shares or property that you sold in the first place, and I can’t think of any scenario where you would be forced to sell a property against your wishes, other than a CPO?

I see it more like the house seller who sells his house with an acre of land, wants £300k for it (more than the going rate) but also wants a 'clawback' in case the land is sold for building later on. (Yep this was a house sale I saw and thought that's almost the cost of building land anyway).

Buying a house with a clause that says the seller can buy it back for double the price in the future sounds like a much better deal than rent actually.
