That line ran from Bury and it closed in about 1970, but the nearest station was Bolton, which is about a 10 minute walk away down Manchester Road, so your memory’s playing tricks 🙂

Must be somewhere else then. Hull? Lincoln? I've definitely been to an away ground where the train stopped bang outside and we were stood on the away end looking up and seeing hundreds of Blades pouring off it towards the ground. I'm probably going back to the 1970's or 80's.

Thanks both (Deaneandagana and Wapping Blade).

I knew I'd not imagined it. It was indeed the old Boothferry Park. What an occasion that used to be! Some fair aggro between the fans back in the day. I never went by train myself, but I remember looking up and seeing all those Blades getting off the train and heading towards the ground - it was like the D-Day landings!

Portsmouth in the late sixties. Station (Fratton) was above the large terrace opposite the main stand. I remember using that station in an FA Cup tie. We lost 4-0 or 4-1 I think. It`s a faded memory now so maybe "Silent" can provide the score.

It's not the match you're talking about, but I remember a first match of the season, away at Portsmouth. I went by train. It took 4 and a half hours and we got there about half past three, just saw the last few minutes of the first half. That was either a 4-0 or 4-1 to Portsmouth. Alan Biley hat trick I think? Then it was marched off to the station for another 4 and a half hour train ride back home - couldn't even get a seat on the way back - sat in the corridor. Reyt day 'art! 😳

I went that day on the very same train, remember arriving back in Sheff at 10pm - went straight into Old Queens Head in Pond St & got hammered

Bet you wished you'd had stayed there all day eh? Just looked it up. It was 28th August 1982. 4-1 to Portsmouth. 9 hours of train riding for about an hours worth of dire football - and not even chance for a beer in between. I think that was the last time I went on the "footy special" train to a match.

Fratton station is about a ten minute walk from the football ground. I used it myself the last time we played there.

Last one I went on was to Carlisle in 84 or 86 looking at soccer base, can’t remember the result (1-1 or 1-0 to the Cumbrians respectively).

I do remember it taking forever and being held in a siding in the middle of nowhere for ages, then getting the full police escort to the ground.

Maybe Fratton Park Station then, if it exists/existed, or if it was Fratton we used, then a 10 minute walk when you are young and excited is probably far quicker to accomplish ! However I remember looking down on the ground from the carriage as we alighted.

Already posted as my first entry on the thread, "Sheffield's special little shops".
Well done CB, and please excuse my total ignorance on the subject.
Note to self, keep yeh large hooter out when y've not read read thread properly.

I believe it was the first match of the season following on from Promotion from Div 4.

Maybe CB is thinking of the old Hull City ground.

You can see the ground (floodlights and tops of stands) from Fratton station but it's still a 10 minute walk

I can’t see it being Fratton Park you’re remembering as Fratton station isn’t elevated. You can see the floodlights of the ground in the photograph.

Hampden Park in 1978

Sadly TC falls into the group of talented English players that were often overlooked in favour of more pragmatic players over the years .. add in Bowles , Worthington, Hoddle , Le Tissier to name a few off the top of my head and to think that Woodward was only capped at B level bewildering?
I know a few Bolton fans through work and was interesting speaking to a couple of the older lads from another club how much they rated both Currie & Woody , one of them recalling how old thunder boots couldn’t half strike a ball

You should remove Hoddle from that list (53 Caps) and replace with Alan Hudson (2 Caps) :)

My mate who is a season ticketholder at Stamford Bridge told me that Alan is now persona non grata at the ground

I wouldn’t be at all surprised, he cuts a really tragic figure and has done for many years. He comes across as believing that life dealt him a bad hand, he has no apparent sense of being responsible in any way for what happened to him, even his serious accident when the story goes that he was pissed. He lived in Stoke for many years when no longer playing for the club and his drinking exploits there were legendary.

I’m a bit surprised he’s lived as long as he has, he’s had other health issues to contend with as well as the self inflicted ones. He was certainly a wasted talent.
