Like I said to someone else, calculating a margin of error is incredibly easy. Easy enough even the Daily Mail managed it.

But I can only think the footballing bodies thought they'd sound good if they said stupid things like "8cm offside".

The bullshit thing with these figures, is two things:
Frame rate of camera - between 2 frames the plater can move a few feet at full belt.

How is the moment the ball is kicked judged? They always put loads of microscopic detail on player position, but itsimpossible to get an accurate angle to say when the ball was kicked.

Yeah, the level of accuracy they're trying to use is complete bollocks. But they could've just taken the two seconds to do a bit of maths and come up with some sensible estimates, have a margin of error and say offsides are only given if the distance exceeds the margin. Everyone could have access to the maths, we'd know how decisions were made, and we could all talk about whether that's better than linesmen are. Which it probably would be.

None of these rules were implemented sensibly. They were all done to try and make VAR look better by gaslighting fans into thinking refs could now judge fractions of a cm. It's backfired horribly.

I sincerely hope not. I fear it’s the thin end of the wedge that will lead to more breaks in play to facilitate TV advertising and the game will end up like American Football.

Bloody hope not ! That’s one of the main reasons why I struggle to watch the vast majority of American sports !
