Great insight as ever there SV, however do you, by any chance, have any similar insight into the transfers activity(or not of course) at the lane?

Fully take the point Oakland, but if in a parallel universe we were offered Bellamy on the basis most reported to Cardiff and were asked to contribute £20k of his wages, what would the answer be if we're not signing players on less than half that? A lot of what we do is going to be based on the levels of generosity of clubs and players. I suspect the pull of "The valleys" has led to Bellamy and Koumas driving these loans through because they actually want to go there. Here's hoping Kevin Davies is tired of Bolton.

I wonder if there is actually a player out there who would excite our fans in the same way Bellamy has? Is there any player who could persuade 3000 of our fans to fork out on shirts with their name and number? I can't think of a realistic one

Look at the other side of the coin.Never mind the players who might attract the missing fans back. What about fighting tooth and nail to keep the decent players we've had in the past. The most recent being the two Kyles.Ever since ive being going to the Lane,we have consistently sold players.Only the Blades would have sold their centre forwards just before an Fa Cup semi final. This is the trend that needs to be addressed at the Lane. We've changed managers, chairman, boards of directors, owners, the lot but the policy has always been the same.I started going in 1967,and my dad in the forties and he always said we should be the richest club in the country, the money we've made on transfers.

So how would you of kept them when they wanted to go?

..........very, very quiet..........nothing coming out of the lane.

:tumbleweed:

I think that tells us everything we need to know. 15:47 and not even a whisper of anything. Just forum gossip.....which is essentially nothing

Two hours to get Speedo's hoped for 'one or two additions'.
Though I notice he's already backtracked in today's Star to it not being the end of the world if we don't get anyone and some kind of vague notion about loanings.
It's like last season never happened.

So how would you of kept them when they wanted to go?

You could easily have kept Walker with the straightforward promise that he could go the following year if we didn't go up, increasing his pay along the way.

But could we have done that and easily paid the bills?

When a man is tired of Bolton he is tired of...well...Bolton I suppose.

Wouldn't take long either I imagine.

You're very wrong there Oreyt, Bolton has lots to offer, there's.....

Farnworth Social Club, where Phoenix Nights was filmed
Fred Dibnah's house

er, that's it.....

When all the stories at the time were that he was the one more determined to leave once he knew Spurs were interested

Mebbes it was the agents, those pesky agents. They run our club, not the chairman or the directors. They're powerless.

Highly unlikely to be true. Hey Walker you can forget that 20K a year pay packet we are going to keep you on your current terms until next season.

I'm sure he would of said no problem Len.

You could easily have kept him, just as Liverpool have kept hold of Javier Mascherano...

I know that was meant sarcastically len, but it's true. If we say no, then the player doesn't play to his full potential as he wanted to leave. what would you do?

a) Stand firm, pissing off the player, who consequently begins to under perform, seeing out his contract so he leaves for nothing, or leaves for a reduced fee later on

b) Get a decent fee, let the mardy bugger go somewhere else for more cash and sit on the bench.

I'd rather anyone who doesn't want to be here, not be.

If he wants to play for us, it's a totally different set of circumstances.

If you are being paid £2k a week and someone comes in and offers you £18k a week, even as loyal as you are, you're gonna take it aren't you! Even if united came back and offered £10k, not saying they did, you'd still take the £18k.

It's like any job in any walk of life, if you get offered more cash, 9/10 you're gonna go for it, i know i would.

And Man United Christian Ronaldo.

I would say Mick Jones did not want to go and that Tony Currie did( i.e did not fancy the 2nd division).

Source?Because i think im correct in saying they were both offered and accepted improved contracts at the Lane.Only for one to be almost forced through the door once the Spurs offer came in.

That's not true.

How can we force them through the door, down to WHL and then force them to sign?

Apparently David Nugent is going to Burnley and Tommy Smith to QPR. Portsmouth could only name four subs on Saturday. Will they get 11 out for their next game?

Yes, when a player wants to go, he always goes, doesn't he Bob?
He was an 18-year-old kid who'd played five games. If we'd didn't have the management nous to keep him for one year, we may as well pack up (which is pretty much what we have done).
It was a short-sighted transfer which was all about getting money in now - with the intention that Evans would make up for it.
In the event, even the short-sightedness could have been forgiven if they'd got the loan right but they couldn't even do that.
As for comparing Walker with five games with an established World Cup star, oh dear.

You claimed he was going to be the second coming, playing regular Premiership and international football, certainly more than Bartley.
You doing another Wardy on us Len?

I tell you what you whisper in a 18 year olds ear than he can earn nearly 10 times he wages playing for Spurs or stay at United and he ain't going to stay. Especially when he is coming back to his team for a season long loan.

But hey you have all the answers don't you Len?

I was comparing the situation between us and Spurs as being like the situation between Liverpool and Barcelona, and as Bob did, Man Utd and Real Madrid, in as much as when a "bigger" club wants one of your players and their agent unsettles them there's not a hell of a lot you can do beyond getting the maximum amount of money out of them.

Clubs do have ways of forcing through transfers that will make them the profit they crave.I do accept your point that we couldnt drive them down at gunpoint and make them sign on the dotted line. But being told they wont be considered for selection so they are better off leaving does happen.

Are you saying the Kyles were told they wouldn't be considered for selection?

If you are I believe someone is spinning you a line.

I've nicked this from F365 which gives an indicator of the players available once the 25 man squads have been finalised. Have to remember all players aged 21 or under don't have to be named in that 25 man squad, just 'senior' players:

The only teams that currently hit 25 are Bolton, Fulham, Man City, Stoke, Spurs, West Brom and Wolves.

So, here's who looks at present at risk:

Bolton: No-one
Fulham: Eddie Johnson, then two of Diomansy Kamara/Pascal Zuberbühler/Fredrik Stoor/David Elm (I missed Dembele and Halliche off the original list, oops)
Man City: Robinho (going to Milan), David Gonzalez, Gunnar Nielsen, Kelvin Etuhu
Stoke: Mamady Sidibe (out for season), Ryan Shotton, Diego Arismendi (not sure when his loan ends at Barnsley). Shotton may get in if both Lawrence and Kitson go to Pompey in exchange for Wilson, freeing up a spot.
Spurs: Jonathan Woodgate (out forever)
West Brom: Luke Daniels, Dean Kiely (goalkeeping coach so won't go anywhere). Possibly Luke Moore if they decide to retain Daniels as a third keeper.
Wolves: Matt Hill, probably Carl Ikeme or dependent on injury, Michael Kightly.

Not a lot to pick from. Kightly?

Its all about ambition ................or lack of it in the Blades case.
