Thought I might start a thread to count down until the cut-off.....!

5 hrs to go and nothing yet!

Personally I don't think anything will happen and we will get the same old spin, "we tried for one or two but nothing cam off and the ones we could sign were no better than we already have"...

Rob Hulse off to QPR says Sky. Such a shame that we bottled it and sold him at the first opportunity, rather than giving him a pre-season to prove his fitness post-injury.

Whatever does/doesnt happen between now and 6pm will determine our season. If United dont sign anyone they dont sign anyone its as simple as that and you just have to accept it....but from what ive seen so far we are nowhere near good enough to challenge for a top six berth. Without being a clapper or a sunshine boy, thats just my honest opinion....

If we dont sign at least a couple of players today, then we're stuck with what we have until January and its very unlikely the loan market would offer anything that could make a considerable difference. If that happens, expect United to finish mid-table this season. If they surprise me and make two good signings today, then it will give us half a chance.

All I would say is lets give the club until 6 o'clock before forming opinions etc. :)

Let's be honest, the loan window reopens again soon as this seems to be our modus operandi in recent seasons.

Well exactly and thats probably what we'll form our plans around. Today will simply be a measure of any ambition this club has (or probably hasnt) got left. With a new manager in place and a change in style imminent you would expect that this would be the best time for the board to loosen the purse strings and make a move in the market. If not now, then they probably never will.

Birchy and McCabe have to show we're serious about promotion and giving Speed some money is the only way to do that. If the window closes and we've made no serious moves then fair enough....we've come to expect it and you just have to shrug it off. But under those circumstances all it would say to me is that our aim is to maintain our Championship status and do the bare minimum.

No matter how much of a clapper or sunshine boy anyone is....no one can honestly say that what we saw on saturday is good enough for promotion. Its a million miles away and thats the sad truth. If we dont sign anyone....fine, but then dont try to tell us that our aim is promotion when its not being backed up.

In the worst case scenario, good luck to Speedo (he's going to need it).

ive been glued to sky sports and the bbc live up to the minute transfer updates all morning and theres been sod all mentioned about united not a sodding peep. goodbye championship hello league 1 and i say that not has a put down or a whinge i say it has i see it. i will say one thing though no matter what league were in il still and always will be a blade. I dont think we were a million miles away, just a couple of decent pacey wingers and we'll be up there.

Whats the limit of loan signings we can make in a season? I know you can only play 5 on a match day but not sure how many we're allowed in total. I think when the premiership clubs cut down to 25 we could see a couple of decent loans coming this way

Rumours from inside are that most deals have broken down due to Agents demands.

I'm loving this little rumour. It seems to have started from E89's statement that there are greedy agents still to overcome in his "stay calm" thread. This then seemed to spawn its own dedicated thread on BM. The rumour then gathered pace when it headed over here and now someone has created the same thread over on BM again following the post on here.

We wont be signing anyone.Mcabes away trying to secure links to a club made up of yak herdsmen in outer Mongolia. He stated its an un-tapped area for up and coming footballing talent and a club like sufc need to be at the forefront to have first pick on what they have to offer.

I dont think we should be that worried. We have enough about us to stay well clear of trouble IMO, but not enough to be serious contenders up the top end.

I hope you're right TD. Somehow I get the feeling that the truth is somewhere in the middle of what you and cresswell have said. Mid-table mediocrity is written all over us IMO. We're not a bad side....I wouldnt say that we are. We're just considerably average and lack the sort of quality that a few other sides have.

Yep, and it'll be all too easy to wheel out the Pesky Agents/No-one out there better than what we've got routine. It may even be correct. But I think there's extra pressure on the club this year because

a) they admitted an over-reliance on the loan system last year
b) they said they wouldn't make the same mistake this
c) they need something to try and re-interest 5000 or so fans ( or "fans" if you prefer)

Yeah, I'd go with that.

It gets trickier this season however due to the 25 man squad rule. I suppose we won't know for certain who is available until those lists actually go in and agents are informed that their players will get bugger all football until January at the very least.

Think the transfer window needs to be reassessed with that in mind tbh.

It certainly is BB, it certainly is...

Aye, but they'll probably give it a couple of years to see how it pans out, or introduce something more complicated in the meantime.

Atm it just makes the course more difficult to navigate, though I'd suggest if "wages" are the stumbling block for, say Wellens, we're going to be in bigger trouble trying to bag a Premiership No 26.

It will be Same Owd, Same Owd because McCabe cannot be trusted and has got Speedo under false promises of money for transfers!
At the forum he stated that this season we would NOT rely on the loan system..............Nosworthy, Bartley, Calve and Free Transfer Jordan made up Saturdays back four
Seems to be a bit of reliance there don't you think!

To be honest that may not be the case, there was an article in one of the papers this weekend (probably the mail) saying how premier clubs would be subsidising Cardiff to the tune of £5m over the course of this season

Fully take the point Oakland, but if in a parallel universe we were offered Bellamy on the basis most reported to Cardiff and were asked to contribute £20k of his wages, what would the answer be if we're not signing players on less than half that? A lot of what we do is going to be based on the levels of generosity of clubs and players. I suspect the pull of "The valleys" has led to Bellamy and Koumas driving these loans through because they actually want to go there. Here's hoping Kevin Davies is tired of Bolton.

When a man is tired of Bolton he is tired of...well...Bolton I suppose.

Wouldn't take long either I imagine.
I've never actually been into Bolton or to their snazzy ground. I've driven past them on several occasions though, and that was enough. I find Lancashire is best treated like the Top Gear test track - try to get through as quickly as possible, and don't talk to any of them, the wierdos. :D
