Surely we're not going to play one (or even two) leaden-footed striker up front in a home match against one of the relegation favourites? My team would be:-

Simonsen
Calve Bartley Morgan Jordan
Lowton Ertl Britton Yeates
Ward Creswell
Subs:- Aksalu, Nosworthy, Montgomery, Quinn, Chappell, Evans, Bogdanovic

If Speed does manage to sign a pacy forward before Saturday, get him straight in! Ward back to the wing and Lowton to the bench instead of Chappell.

What about trying this?....

A-la World Cup????? :D

I like it. Wardy did seem to have license to roam last Sunday, and the only decent moves we did make were when he was coming through the middle.

Id swap Bartley for Nossy, Im just not sold on Bartley.

Got to admit I watched the game through very bleary eyes on Sunday and couldnt take that much of it in but I just get the impression Wengers sent Bartley here to make his mistakes (which is acceptable for a young player ) and get toughened up abit. I think nossy is much more the finished article and although he looks like hes going to cost us a goal or 2 each game he hasnt actually cost us any yet. Hes also much better playing in the middle than as a full back

If you believe the rumours, we pretty much broke the bank for Nos though so who's going to miss out presuming Calve will slot straight in at RB ? Bartley is the best ball playing CB IMO and if that's the way we want to play.......

So everyone happy to leave monty out the guy who has just signed a new contract???? oh and quinn

Got the impression that Nosworthy was played in desperation to change something. To me he's never been the quickest of players, but didnt look fit at all on Sunday.

it looks good on paper, but I fear that Evans would be isolated up front. You've also got our main goal threat playing out of psotion on the left wing. I think I prefer Southall's .....

I like this Sothall. Maybe Nos playing right back (as i know very little about Calve).

Yes. Until they find some form absolutely. They have both started the season quite poorly and would be on the bench if I was manager. Dont get me wrong I love Monty's effort and spirit and Quinny is a little trooper as well.

I'm not suggesting we get rid of them but if we're going to start passing the ball and building a proper football team their performances need to improve/change. Ertl and Britton is a much better midfield pairing in my mind (at the moment).

I think you are probably right. But a change of manager should mean that there are no sacred cows.

That is true I have to agree with that. Ive said before that I think we will only truly change our style if the spine of the team is changed. With Morgs and Monty (I like them both for the record) I am not convinced we can play the way fans want us to with them in the team every week.

You can either have a West Brom style approach with the appropriate players....or go more basic/direct with players like Morgs and Monty. This is where the tough decisions has to be made. Morgs is a great leader but he will look to play the easy ball (long) on most occasions. Asking him to do something else isnt in his nature. Its a tough call for me but I think Speed will play Morgs anyway, whilst trying to find a happy medium with the style. If he's a good manager....he'll be able to achieve that.

Fair points. You could tinker with it though. Perhaps something more like this?

....................Simonsen....................
Calve......Morgan......Bartley......Jordan
..............Britton........Ertl.................
Yeates..............Ward........... New LW
....................Cresswell....................

I agree that Cresswell is much better up front. The first formation featured him there because I dont see another realistic option on that side. I kind of shoe-horned him into that role really. If Speed has a left winger in mind then as above would be a good shout. If we're insistent on playing one up front then this system is a much better option IMO. Britton looks a much better player running from deep as well. He carries it well out of our half so would allow other to make runs ahead of him.

To be honest I'd probably stick Cressy on the bench, he's not looked like do anything as yet (albeit out of position) so I'd try Evans and Ward up top.

Something like

- - - - Simmo- - - - - -

Calve Nos Morgan Jordan

- - - - Britton- - - - -

- -Yeates-Ertl-Quinn- -

- - - Ward-Evans- - - -

Any ideas for a new left winger??

If he's available for a decent looking fee, I'd opt for George Boyd who's still wasting away at Peterborough. Clearly has lots of talent and too good for division 3

Thats an excellent shout and I championed this guy when I saw him at the lane last season. Very good player and composed on the ball, I rate the guy.

I would be tempted to look for someone with a bit more pace though. Perhaps someone like Nathan Tyson or Craig Fagan could fit into the 4-3-3? Or for a more out and out winger....dare I suggest Michael McIndoe? (not my choice but the only left winger I can think of off the top).

What has everybody got against Yeates at left wing all of a sudden? He played a blinder in that position against Ipswich in the last game of last season and everybody was raving about him. I thought he did well against Estudiantes and since then he's only been played about 18 minutes as a sub. I certainly think he's the best option we've got at the moment. Not sure what he's done wrong?

He should be first choice on the right hand side for me. The only thing I have against him playing on the left is that he's right footed. Thats not to say he cant use his left foot at all but his natural instinct will be to go inside the full back onto his right foot. Most full backs will know this and will show him the outside (good ones will anyway).

If youre right footed and going to play on the left (or vice-versa) you have to be a very good player and have a well practised weaker foot. Besides, playing him out of position on the strength of one game is debatable to me. Might work though, we dont have a lot of other options there........

We need wingers with pace, so I'd go with Ward on the right and someone else who we bring in on the left.

I'd like to see:

.................Simonsen

Calve....Morgan....Nosworthy....Jordan

............Monty........Ertl

Ward.............Britton..............New LW

..................Cresswell
