The League One Adventure - 6 years in the making...the Good, the Bad and the Weird - A look back

The Ched season was the most enjoyable one for me personally. I went to loads of away games. A particular highlight was when we went to Notts County (who were in fine form) to find us 0-4 up at half time. We went on to win 2-5. The atmosphere was immense.

The week after, I went with the same mate to Rochdale. On the way we said, we shall never get an away game like last week when we won 2-5. Those games happen once in a lifetime.

FT Rochdale 2-5 blades

That Rochdale game was the day before the trial started. I seem to remember McDonald and Doyle both scored belters.

Cheers for that Deadbat Enjoyed the read but being the pedant that I am, I have to raise a couple of minor issues.

1. I believe Clough rolled into town and beat us one nil, not two nil and.

2. I believe Sean McGinty only played 2 games for us so wouldn’t qualify for the worst 11. Surprised you couldn’t find room for Cofie on the bench but there are some real gems to choose from in terms of strikers.

Surprised Rochdale away last season hasn’t been mentioned by anyone as a low point. 2-0 defeat (despite dominating the first half). Fans getting in bother with that whole ridiculous tug of war over the pitch cover. Chants of “we’re fucking shit” and “you’re not fit to wear the shirt” echoing round the ground.

One of the high and weird points for me was the applause after Hull’s fifth goal. Proper goosebumps moment even though our defeat had just been sealed.

What a good review that is mate enjoyed reading the highlights & lowlights and made me so fkg glad we're out of this league of nothingness ! UTB

Meant to add high points - this season , the magic party at MK , Charlton home in QF best atmosphere & actually turning in a a performance at Wembley against Hull .. low points obvs dipping out to oinks , woeful semis against Yeovil & Swindon and the others I choose to resign to room 101. Having seen us promoted out of this division on 2 previous occasions to this , this is without doubt the best footballing & promising team of them all & I can't wait for next season and some re-acquaintances with old 'friends'

Low point fan wise, MK Dons after Cheds conviction. 6000+ there and it was like a morgue.

Team wise, Bury away. Wet windy night and a team with no redeeming qualities at all. Abused at full time like Ive never seen before and fully deserved. Absolute low point in this division.
I was at both those + concur.

The Ched one was weird. I think we all knew the season was over. It was also a shock as the other guy Johnson(?) Had been found not guilty. I think the team were in shock too.

I don't know how I missed this thread. It brings back a lot of great memories (and some not so good!). Some random ones:

Driving all the way from Cornwall after doing part of the Southwest Coast Path and calling in at Crewe for a midweek game - sitting in an Indian restaurant and thinking there weren't many fans around, then realising the game had been called off because of a frozen pitch!

Being stoned at Tranmere - kids walking behind me and a young chap on the way to the railway station, being pelted with gravel and suchlike off the road.

Sitting at Exeter with two friends thinking we were with Exeter fans but once the game started, realising we were surrounded by Blades.

Northampton in the away end. A young fellow sitting with the Northampton fans at the edge of the segregation - he kept looking furtively in our direction and it was only later when I saw a video that I realised he was a Blade.

Leaving Port Vale at the end of the match and having to walk through a cordon of police to get to the station. It was a tight connection and I was one of the first out of the ground and doubt I would have got through a minute or two later.

Feeling really chuffed that I had enough loyalty points to get an away ticket for Wimbledon but then having vape blown in my face for the entire game - to be fair apart from that he seemed a decent bloke.

Some of this sounds a bit negative but I really enjoyed those times in League 1 and saw some places I would never have dreamt of going to otherwise. It culminated with going to every match home and away during 2017 - this was only ruined at Burton when Paul coutts broke his leg. That was terrible.

The Ched Evan's conviction was another "curse" on the club by the football Gods. We were cruising to auto promotion and then his hearing started. If it been 2 or 3 weeks later we would have clinched promotion by then. He was convicted and sent down so didn't play again. Without him and his goals we were awful including the PO Final v Hudders but even then we were up on penalties in the shoot out but still blew it. The final blow was that the Pigges went up instead of us.
Then the final irony was that his conviction was set aside so he was found not guilty!
It could only happen to SUFC!

It wasn’t a curse. It was a consequence of Evans’ idiot behaviour.

Sorry there was no "curse" Evans behaved like prick and cheated on his wife, he was convicted of a crime which if his family didn't have money would have Probably still stood.

The fact that Wilson/Board knew this could have happened and didn't prepare for this was the problem.

Weirdly I think the Southend 0-3 under Wilder was the lowest I felt during those 6 years. That night it truly felt like we would never escape. Ended up being a part of a catalyst for much greater times.

Southend United who are now stuck mid table in the National League.

Also, Scunthorpe United are now in the National League North with Andy Butler as manager, yes the same Andy Butler that fell out with Clough and was immediately shipped out.

I think you are confusing criminality with morality

I will always defend Wilson and the Club on the allegation we were not prepared.

We already had Cresswell and Porter.

We signed Beattie, O’Halloran and Hoskins as cover.

Hoskins got injured and the other two turned out to be useless, but there was a certain amount of bad luck involved there.

League One wasn’t all bad.

Before the Adkins season I switched my season ticket from the Kop to the South Stand to where me and the young un remain to this day, in seats that are amongst the best in the ground
