Probably a good point to have a reminder of the difference in prize money between the positions. The below is from last season – though the tv cash for this season is I believe changing to allocate it via position too (and obviously there have been major changes on the amount the league gets this season). £7m difference in prize money between 6th and 10th based on those figures is pretty significant though. That’s two Ben Osborn value players we could sign.

Athletic Bilbao is an interesting one too, must admit I don’t watch Spanish football any more so curious if anyone knows why they are so good defensively. Standout player(s) or unique system?

I hope your stats extend to when we play them. All I am saying is that the I’ve watched their games post lockdown and they look very good and I’ve watched Everton and they have been shite.

Bilbao are a unique one as they have a policy of "cantera?" where almost all of their players are from the Basque region and come through the academy. This season they tended to play a flat back four with either one or two holding midfielders depending on the attacking quality of the opposition. What they do have is two very good fullbacks in Capa and Berniche. Berniche in particular has had probably his best ever season at the tender age of 30 having returned from PSG 2 years ago.

There have been occasions where they have played five at the back a la Wilder with the two full backs pushing on. Inigo Martinez an experienced La Liga centre half has been their Egan if you like, no matter how they have set up with the younger Alvarez the more mobile "continental" type centre half who is good with both feet. I would probably say their defensive success is down to a combination of experienced players playing in the right positions, with plenty of athleticism (which isn't too often seen in La Liga) and then being able to play pretty much the same back line all season.

Went to watch Villareal at Bilbao before the lock down
Fantastic stadium and amazingly loyal fans .Although not totally copying our system they are a very competitive outfit
