I don't believe that he was Speed's first choice assistant. I think the club have missed a good opportunity to make a statement of intent that this is a new start.

Len will have a field day, and the worst bit is he will probably be right.

I'd guess Speed probably earned somewhere near to Blackwell if not more given what his original playing contract was.
Now he's boss but we've got rid of Blackwell, keep Ellis and can appoint a much lower paid coach than Speed.

I think its the fact that he's ugly, ginger and a pig that people find reasons not to like him. Quite understandable. But as you say we don't really know what he does. Maybe Speed is waiting on someone else to become available and then Ellis will be shown the door.

Exactly Duncs he might have a ruddy complexion or high blood pressure as some have pointed out but Speed wants him as his #2!Thats the way it is.

There really is no way to know if he's a good assistant unless you see him at work. All the speculative rubbish I've read (over many years) about our assistant managers is tiresome.

That said, the point about him being Speed's or Birch's choice is a very good one. And we won't find out for while on that.

When a manager is sacked, his assistant is often promoted into the job or more often shown the same door. The fact the former was never going to happen suggested he would be on his way. To be fair Grumps, we were only reacting to the fact that the OS's carefully worded statement suggested that he was being retained in another role.

You must admit, it's unusual for a No.2 to be retained following the sacking of a manager when the two have worked together for a while.

That's a bit harsh grumpy - I would think that the fans most natural reaction was to assume the AM would go as well given that's what usually happens.

It could also be highly embarrasing that they have passed over the AM and given the managers job to the coach instead, wouldn't most (ambitious) people in football usually take their bat home in this case and go to another club?

Ellis was a disgrace on a couple of occassions when speaking after games last term but his continued involvement does not detract from the point that this has been a great start to the season for many supporters of SUFC.

Interesting the debate that is going on around Sam Ellis's suitability or otherwise to be Assistant Manager and whatever we think of him and his pig connections, the man ceratinly has a wealth of experience behind him and having read this Wiki article I can properly understand why Speedo has kept him on.

"In his younger days, Ellis played as a centre-half for Sheffield Wednesday in the 1960s. As a teenager he made his debut in the 1966 FA Cup final against Everton, in which his team lost 3–2. He then moved on to play for Mansfield Town, Lincoln City, and Watford. It was at Vicarage Road that he became coach and assistant manager to future England boss Graham Taylor. With Ellis' help, Watford climbed the divisions before turning down a new contract in favour of trying his hand at management. When the Blackpool job was advertised, Ellis applied and was given the job on 1 June 1982.

Ellis was manager at the seaside for seven years, from 1982 to 1989, with no prior managerial experience under his belt, but the new board at Bloomfield Road were confident in his ability. Despite finishing in the bottom four of the Fourth Division in his first season, thus forcing the club to apply for re-election to the Football League, Ellis managed to turn the side around and gain promotion two years later with only limited funds handed to him. Although he kept the Tangerines in the Third Division, they were unable to make further progress and Ellis' contract was terminated on 28 March 1989, with relegation looking a possibility.

Ellis then had a brief spell as manager of Bury before moving to Manchester City as Peter Reid's assistant manager. In 1994 he was appointed manager of Lincoln City before returning to Gigg Lane as Stan Ternent's assistant the following year. When Ternent moved to Burnley in 1998, Ellis followed him. After six years at Turf Moor, Ellis became assistant manager to Kevin Blackwell at Leeds United. Ellis later worked with Blackwell at Luton Town (after a spell at Stoke City) and, currently, Sheffield United."

There's a heck of a lot of experience in Sam Ellis and some small success as a manager. For a young manager in his first job, I can see why Speedo would want him around.

I do recall the number of people who maintained, at the time, that Blackwell was the real brains behind Warnock. Now forgotten...

Speedo could easily get another manager job, with less expectation and lower profile than here. Do you really think he would have accepted Ellis if he didn't think he was the man for the job. Do you think that Birchy would put a millstone round the new guys neck if he didn't want it? The overwhelmingly logical conclusion is that we dont know what Ellis does but whatever it is he must do it really well...
