I honestly think VAR, if used correctly, is a welcome addition to the league. As with any new system, there will always be a 'bedding in' period, and in the early part of the season, we along with just about every other team benefited and suffered from this time.
However watching the Man U game last night it became apparent that we are going backwards. Personally I would like to see the rules relaxed so that if any part of the attackers body is level with the defender then play should continue. This is the entertainments business, and we want to see goals, not offsides
One of these goals was ruled offside, one wasnt.
Hate conspiracy theories, but its hard to defend them when decisions like this happentoe.PNGshaw.PNG

They have admitted they pick and choose when to review, so the whole thing is fucked.

Did they not do the lines on the TV? I heard the commentator state that Shaw was played on by Burn but didn't see any picture to back that up, does look mighty close.

And wasn't the ball out of play in the build up, yet they decided to include Lundstram in the same phase, even though the ball was headed away before Stevens crossed yet the ball going out did so only 30 seconds before the goal yesterday.

You don’t even need them to draw lines on the pitch to see that Luke Shaw is onside on that image so I’m not sure what the issue is

Ball_Sup (Phil) has a very good (if slightly patronising 😉) blog about this.

2 bottles, one bigger than the other:

Same bottles with the smaller one closer to the camera:

The issue is that in the case of Man U, the offside decision was dismissed within a few seconds, with no evidence provided to make it transparent, whereas in the Blades case it took them the best part of 5 minutes to concoct an offside which wasnt.
As I said, they are BENT.

But Shaw was well onside, cant get more transparent than that!

The Spurs offside was one of many around that time that occurred. If my mind serves me right liverpool had one ruled out at Villa, i think Villa at Burnley (there'll have been more)...i dont think there's a major conspiracy going on that does United out of anything! Its the first year its in use, bound to be some teething issues with it

Honest question here, how many times (Villa non goal aside) has the VAR made a wrong decision?? The offsides, despite seemingly being ridiculous when its a toe, or an armpit deemed to be off, technically are offside. So just wondered as my memory struggles at times, what else has been wrong? And not just United related

The off the ball fouls which rarely seem to get looked at? like Norwood being on the end of a leg breaker at Bournemouth. The clear handball we should have had against Southampton?

There have been some poor decisions in other matches not including us as well, I am sure Wolves fans probably have a few tales to tell.

They admitted quite early into the season that it had got the wrong decision on at least 4 occasions. That was maybe a month or two in!

The point about the offside thing is it's simply not accurate enough to make some of the calls it has this season. The ridiculous one where they decided a Man City goal was 10cm offside or something daft. You can calculate a margin of error and just have the computer spit back whether it's far enough offside to be given or not. It's the standard of maths I did on my GCSE chemistry coursework about 17 years ago, pretty sure a modern computer could manage it today.

The technology is nowhere near good enough to base offside decisions on a distorted image of a toe or the point of a shoulder blade .

Allowance needs to be made for margin of error and it should be in favour of the attacking side .

Exactly Joe. Been cases where a player is level and even behind an opponent but was called off due to body posture. Such as sticking leg out or bending.
VAR is applying rules like those used in horse racing and athletics.

Maybe because it didn’t require 5 minutes to decide that Luke Shaw was onside because it’s fairly obvious to anyone with a good eyesight?

There have also been cases where it's been shown that the line drawn across the pitch was not precisely at right angles to the sidelines .

And is the technology good enough to determine the exact position of the players bodies at the precise nanosecond of the ball leaving the passing players boot ? The answer is no , so it's incumbent on them to abandon this farcical pretence that they can give a 100 % infallible decision in all situations and adopt a protocol which reflects this , as is the case in cricket .

As you say, it was dismissed in seconds without (from what I saw) the lines been drawn
Whereas some decisions are poured over for a number of minutes

This is the point, when I saw this real time on TV, I instantly thought offside, as mattbianco1 has pointed out, its about perspective
I have drawn lines here, now depending on whether its a millimetre here or there depends on whether he is on or off
How can anyone be so sure when even with lines its bloody close - thats why they took 2 minutes for Lunnys big toe, yet not even a check for Shaw?

For me the following are the major issues with the VAR use on offsides:
  • Is a ball played when the boot makes contact with it, or when it leaves the foot - how can this be determined accurately when dealing with such fine margins?
  • Blurred images and putting the line against the outermost part of a blur.
  • The inconsistencies in determining when a phase of play begins and ends in the build up to a goal (for the Lunny offside, the ball was cleared and the cross for the goal came from Enda on the opposite flank)

If none of the above can be determined definitively, then the tech shouldn't be used to such a precise level and a margin of error should be considered (or VAR scrapped)

This might have been explained already but anymore talk of offsides and VAR will make my head explode, but how can we be so sure that the VAR refs are putting the lines in exactly the right place and getting the right angles and perspective etc.

Every offside situation referred to VAR is completely unique in its own right so surely when the margins are so tight, the angles have to be 100% spot on every time for it to be worthwhile, otherwise we might as well judge it with the naked eye and give the benefit of the doubt back to the attacker.

I know Hawkeye isn’t flavour of the month at the minute, but how possible would it be for them to implement a system that converts a real life frame into a virtual one where the camera can be moved to be in line with the last defender?

I agree with you on the Norwood tackle at Bournemouth, it was a disgrace but not a peep from any of the match officials or VAR.

Why anyone continues to support VAR is beyond me. Quite simply it's ruining the game. Football is about skill, strength, speed, tactical awareness, decision making and luck. It's also brilliant. It doesn't need changing and certainly doesn't need sanitising for the benefit of the armchair, FIFA fans. It's a game played in the moment and if you can gain an advantage by 'cheating' you marker by an inch or two then fair play! That's their fault for not being switched on. Those who constantly bleat on about removing mistakes as they 'could cost a club millions' are talking crap. Firstly - its not removed the mistakes - we've all seen that and secondly you don't go down because of one refereeing blunder - you go down because you're not good enough to stay in the league!
