Old Photos For No Reason Whatsoever

I really love looking at this old pictures, but I really can't understand those who suggest Sheffield was nicer back in the 70s and 80s (doesn't seem to be anyone on here - I'm thinking your typical Star reader/contributor). It looks a lot scruffier and more deprived than it does now.

Apologies for replying so late. You seem to have some knowledge of the Mooney family.
The reason I ask is that I am led to believe there is a marriage connection between the Mooney's and my family. According to my maternal grandfather his youngest brother married a 'sister' of the Mooney family. I have little knowledge of my mothers uncle and none at all about his wife. If you have any info on the females of the Mooney family you wish to divulge I would be grateful.
You may give me the kick start I need for searching into this quandary through official records.
Thanks in advance.
No problem XM I'll have a look see what I've got, although I believe George's kids were into double figures by his 2 x wifes

We've got to remember over the decades Sheffield has had to suffer and then recover from the Blitz, Thatcher and Meadowhall, bit like the Blades really

These belonged to my Grandad who will always be the Blades Godfather in our family , and is directly responsible for mine and my extended families long life love affair with SUFC.

Not sure of the provenance of either , and a bit sceptical that they are all real autographs. He will have received these from his mate Albert Nightingale who features on both.45B6AA36-5E7F-459F-93E4-D6E573F727A5.jpeg0EBC3030-9654-4F25-806A-BAF344DC0A0F.jpeg06DE31CE-C2F3-41FC-80A0-72F162F5D548.jpeg

Bert has Hagan's autograph. Yours looks an exact replica of Bert's example.

Wow , thanks , I was hoping someone might clear that up.

The only reason for scepticism was some of the handwriting looks similar ( not Hagan's as it goes) but that was possibly just the style of the day.

Not sure where the training camp was , but a Google search shows that all Lewis Clarke pubs were exclusively in the Worcester/Malvern area.

As long as it wasn't wet, or you didn't try to corner at above 18mph.

The 2.8 V6 was the car of my young dreams too. Simpler times.

The Capri was the car that really did it for me back then, my first ever car was a Sebring Red 1.6 GT XLR with a black vinyl roof & I loved it so much. I went on to own quite a few more over the years, a blue 2.0 with the key snapped off in the ignition so I had to start it with a 20p piece, then a succession of 3.0's, mostly modified with the engine bored out, & then finally a 2.8 Special blue over silver that had a Turbo Technics turbo conversion that took it to 240 bhp, not a lot these days but back then was really something. It also had a few suspension mods, including a sort of A frame that bolted to the rear axle that did wonders for the cornering abilities. Yes the standard cars were happy to swing the arse out but equally it was pretty easy to control with a bit of practise.

Everybody wrote like that years ago and surely nobody would bother faking Second Division footballers autographs 60 or 70 years ago.

That's entirely right, my father told me you had to copy the style exactly as to what the teacher wrote on the blackboard otherwise you'd cop a belt round the earole.

Our greatest ever player no doubt winning the toss because he won everything else. Football League Champions 1898, Great Britain Trophy winners 1898, FA Cup Winners 1899 and 1902. FA Cup losing finalists 1901. Football League Runners up medal 1897 and 1900. Plus 17 caps for England. Our most successful period ever when the Blades were one of the top teams in the country long before the likes of Newton Heath came on the horizon. The original United.

With regard to the autographs I am 99% certain that they are all genuine as I have most of them which have been handed down. In respect of the team photo you are right that it was taken on Worcester City's Ground in January 1947 prior to the Wolves Cup Tie on 30th January when we lost 0-3. The player on the bottom right was Albert Nightingale.

Our greatest ever midfielder is Fleck apparently..

Good player but trophy cabinet determines greatness. Needhams exploits are not mentioned enough by Club and supporters. It would put paid to the "little old Sheffield United who haven't won anything" comments by to-days uneducated national journalists if we shouted about the achievements of the class of 1898 more.

Apologies !! Just had a telephone call from an old friend the game at Wolverhampton was on the 25th January 1947 when we drew 0-0 the replay was at Bramall Lane on the 29th when we won 2-0. The relative programme for the home game is United's rarest programme as mentioned in previous postings. The game against Wolves which I quoted when we lost 0-3 was on the 20th January 1949 at Bramall Lane.
