:fishbowl:Hi all.Whats all of you beer drinkers prefered ale before the game?is it your traditional swills like stones`s or wards?or are u the feminine takers of bottled beverages?:D

If you could get proper Ward's, it'd be that. Even though it was keg, I still drank gallons of the stuff in the Matilda before and after matches. The sulphury pint of cold tea with a bubble on top which masquerades as Ward's now is drawn directly from Satan's bladder.

Seeing as there's no decent bitter in the Lion, it has to be Stella, which is also generally flat as well. If I have to drink piss, it might as well be the strongest piss they offer.

I was always a Stones man myself, but I can't deny I liked a good pint of Wards. the question should be "where can you now buy a decent pint of locally produced bitter?" as he cries into his pint pot of mass produced nitro-keg canned fart producer!

Got a soft spot for Wards personally... it was the first pint I ever bought over the bar myself. I can still remember the sense of achievement my smug little 16 year old self.

The original Wards was ambrosia (no, not bloody rice pudding..!). I still believe in the second coming and that one day, the messiah of all ales will return to be brewed in Sheffield to it's original recipe of..er... sulphur and horse farts. Not like that watery piss that currently masquerades as Wards and brewed in Stockport by Robinson's - a name synonymous with cock ups I'm sure you'll agree.

The best local brew now is Abbeydale Absolution or local-ish Thornbridge Jaipur.

Coach and Horses at Dronfield, or all through the Real Ale Trail.

The only thing is, I was brought up without having to look for a good local beer. It was on every bloody corner. As for a 'good pint of Stones', you might as well ask for the moon on a stick.

As much as I'm a member of CAMRA, they really fucked up by forcing the MMC report in the late 80s/early 90s.

Ward's was the best back 'in the day'or whatever that is supposed to mean. Now it is Kipling, Halycon and Jaipur from Thornbridge Brewery, makes my drive to Coach and Horses at Dronfield well worth it, but trouble is costs me a fortune to get home...

I dont want to sound too biased, but even though the birley is only a fart away from our gaff, its stones creamflow is quality.and at only £1.70(£1.55 mondays)its not to be sniffed at.

Magnet in the Sportsman ,even though its now only the keg thats available ,Moonshine in the Crown on London Road ,occasional (very) carling extra cold if i feel a bit girly

Used to be Wards in the old matilda ,why doesnt somebody reopen that place again with all those student places there now ?

Seeing more Thornbridge stuff in London lately. The Nicholsons chain have one on now and again and there's a place in Pimlico that had about 5 different barrels a couple of weeks ago. I hink it's called The Cask - worth a visit if you're round there, but take your chequebook :(

I like Jaipur but it's loopy juice if not taken in moderation. There's a 4% one that tastes similar. Can't remember what it's called now :( Wild Swan? Summat like that.

You can get plenty of good, locally brewed beer Sean. Kelham Island beers, Bradfield brewery, Thornbridge and (my favourite) Abbeydale Brewery. Check out the Rising Sun at Nethergreen this weekend as it's their beer festival and many local brews should be on tap, as well as a few more from further afield.

As for the original question, a good pint of Wards (Red Lion, Charles St) was always a pleasure but after a few at lunchtime, the guts would turn over that badly, saturday nights became an issue!! A good pint of Stones (few and far between in those desperate days of electronic pumps!) was always a pleasure though.

Fan of the Rutland for ales, they always have a good and varied selection and very different week-to-week. Usually something from Kelham Island, Abbeydale or Thornbridge in. Suits as well when meeting the boys off the train since it's halfway :)

Henry's aka City bar is now a real ale pub. Not bad but I think their cellar is a couple of degrees too cool for my tastes plus they never seem to have any S Yorks ales or Thornbridge ales on.

Stella, guinness, cider, London Pride, some gin and maybe a rum and coke or two if needing a quick pick me up from night before. Then probably more stella, guinness, gin and maybe some jamesons and a pint or two of local real ale for afters. I love awayday drinking in particular. :fishy:

When I was in Paris a couple of weeks ago I discovered Hoegaarden white beer ,about as nice a drink I have found abroad.

the only place i ever drank wards was in the standard b4 bdtbl,im not old enough to remember the wards golden years.ive not been in there for a while.

I think the Hermitage and Barrel were both Wards pubs from what I can remember. If you could get past the smell of bad farts it was really a nice drink.
I was a trophy man myself in the Royal Oak.
