So this lad is set to sign if you believe all the recent paper talk and rumour. The very same player who couldn't get into the Plymouth team last season and spent most of the campaign on loan at Crewe.
This screams out Ryan France mark 2.
You can be guaranteed Blackie will come out with comments like 'great attitude', 'cracking lad', 'can play in a number of positions' etc etc.
Is he better than what we already have? If he is I'm very worried at the quality of our current squad.

I dunno. Perhaps wait and see?

This was said about Taylor.....

I'm all for giving players a chance, but this signing - if turns out to be true, is totally uninspiring.

The good work United have done in bringing in some good players this summer, could easily be undone with a few poor signings.

He'll have all on claiming Simon Walton has a "great attitude".
Plymouth - can't remember what happened to them last season - are desperate to get rid.

I don't think Taylor was a bad signing. We have a real tendency to right players off before they have been given a real chance.
Last season we expected Taylor to come to a new team, step up in class, come into a constantly changing defence infront of a new keeper and perform brilliantly. The same goes for Bartley we expected too much, if the side had been settled at least they might of had a chance.

Taylor is a steady player, our expectations need readdressing.

This is a strange one to me. He had completely fallen off the radar of most clubs about 2 years ago. Walton did actually come through from the Leeds academy with a lot of promise and started quite well. He was highly rated and broke into the Leeds side under Blackwell at a very young age but he seemed to lose his path somewhere.

He's one of those that despite moving down the divisions, could turn out to be a little gem if someone can get the best out of him. My gut feeling says he's peaked very young and will be a squad filler at best for us, but I hope I'm wrong. If he can recapture some of the promise he showed as a youngster he might develop into a decent player. I think KB is hoping for just that and is taking a chance on him because he's cheap. We'll see!

I agree with what you're saying about expectations Bob, but not about Taylor. He's not the worst full back ive ever seen and I like many have had a tendency to exaggerate about him a little, but he is definately not good enough for the second tier. He looks out of his depth in most games and he manages to pass for a good one if he can make a couple of tackles and put in a cross. I feel bad saying such things as the lad is a trier who works hard for the team, but he's just not good enough.

When we played QPR in the cup at home, Routledge (admittedly a good player) took him to the cleaners, it was embarrasing. Watching our left back get absolutely nowhere near the opposition winger for 90 minutes is not something I want to see. I'm not writing him off completely but I struggle to see where he will get any better.

Bartley is a different story. He clearly has good physical attributes and can pass the ball so I see potential there. At such a young age and with little experience, people were very harsh to criticise him for a couple of poor games. He will get better and better.

Signed. Season long loan, Plymouth have recall from January if they get an offer but we have first refusal.

I can only think he's low risk... low reward. Strange one really, but he's cheap backup I suppose.

Going back a few years, he always became a world beater on Champ Manager, on which basis I think he's going to be a fantastic signing. Wonder if we can sign Cherno Samba as well.

Cherno Samba!!!! Yeh he was the best striker in the world on my game. Dont forget Tonton Zola Mokokou - I had both in the same team. Epic!

I think it's enough to say low risk. Players who showed promise not long ago always have the possibility of getting back to that.
If we are low on funds, this is ONE of the types of player that will have to make up our team.

Young, had potential, lost his way a bit, on loan, can't see any problems with this deal at all. If he's not good enough he won't make the 1st team so where's the problem ?

If he has a good few months, the moaners will be on here slitting their wrists aying we're going to lose him in January !!

Aren't you answering your own question here Fleety?

''WHY DID WE LET THEM GET A JANUARY RECALL CLAUSE IN? IS TURRY BACK??????? IT'S NOT BRAIN SCIENCE!!!!'' Etc etc etc.

Indeed, and I shall have to paste my link to the FA rules on transfers AGAIN.

As far as I am aware, a January recall is present in all season long deals provided the 'owning club' move him on somewhere else. The Kyle thing last season, well yes, that was a cock-up and one you hope we've learnt from.

I know nothing of this guy, but if he can defend then maybe he'll be a decent signing. His transfer fees in the past suggest that he has (at the very least) potential. The guy left Leeds for over 500k (rising to 1m) and Plymouth singed him for 750k (a club record). Not massive amounts, but when you consider he is still onyl 22 then it puts things into persective. This (extrememly circumstancial) evidence would suggest he was a good young player who had lost his way a little.

All I'm saying is, it's a no risk signing. A squad player who may turn out to be better than that but no real problem if he is just that, a squad player who can fill in and 'do a job'.

The one problem I have is that the only time ive seen him play he was torn apart. He was very young though (like 17). Does everyone remember the time we won 4-0 at Elland Road a few years back?..........

The right back that was being torn to pieces by Danny Webber was..........yep, a young Simon Walton. Remember it vividly as we was subbed off very early by Blackwell. Super Dan gave him a torrid time!

I can remember a right back being torn apart by Matthew Etherington at the Lane a few years ago, Jaggy something he was called :)

I know what you're saying but the problem is that we are a big club in CCC terms with a great support and a great stadium. We pay big bucks to watch the club and we are presented with seriously damaged goods like Walton managed by, for me, pound for pound the worst manager in the section by a long, long way.

All this in spite of pretty sound assurances from the top brass that we would not be using the loan market to fill the squad in the way we did last season. There are plenty of players out there, Blackwell hasn't got the ability to coach and improve players he doesn't know or who are anything but 'solid, experienced pros' (code for poor footballers) like Ertl who will kick a few attackers, and launch the ball aimlessly forward.

I don't want to come over all len, or tread on his toes, but the lad's 23, he's played 88 league games and we'd be his 10th club, that suggests something's not quite right with him.

To be fair to him you have got to give him a chance.

Look at Greg Halford when he came here, a lot of people thought he would be trouble with all the stuff that had happened off the pitch. But he turned into one of our best players that season.

So why are people already dismissing this lad?

I think we'll like him cos he loves a tackle and a scrap :D lets give him a chance before slating him.

Know what you're saying Trig and he's obviously had plenty of problems since Blackwell gave him his debut but it's not as if he's come out and said 'I'm going to build my team around this lad'.

Re your first comment, he is a young(ish), hungry player with something to prove :)

I'm not entirely dismissing him - we've had lots of players who come with bad reputations and end up as bargains. While Ipswich supporters rate him highly, they're the only club supporters who do. Every other supporter who have had him at their club are pissing themselves laughing over on 365. Plymouth supporters in particular are loving it.

I'll give him a chance like I always do, but I'm not hopeful, not excited by this signing.

Because he struggled on loan at Crewe?
To be fair to SUFC, we do not have to give him a chance.

Oh fucking ell ....... (eeek as BB would say) ...... send him back!!? ;)
