Mentioned this before but never saw any feedback. During the 1950's an ex-Blades player keep the Tavern. Unfortunately can't for the life of me remember who. On occasion, from school, we caught the bus from outside the tavern to town. Distinctly remember seeing the name over the door, whilst awaiting the bus, thinking he played for United and wanting to go in and see him, despite the pub was closed at around 1600.

The only landlord of the Broomhill Tavern who played for United was Harold Barton who played in the 1936 Cup Final & was a player in the second division promotion team of 1938/39. Having worked in a Bank in the 1960's Harold used to come to us for change & we frequented his pub regularly especially on Friday's after late night working. Harold used to tell us plenty of stories of his time at Bramall Lane & he was a gentleman in every respect & an excellent landlord. United signed him from Liverpool in 1934 for £1600 but he never mentioned any stories of his time at the club.

Found this and thought it should be interesting to footballing afficionados. The boots worn are interesting as at that period the 'continental' style boots had past their initial introduction, mid 50's, developing onto what we have today but still fairly 'primitive'.View attachment 78611

I remember vividly being in that, or a similar crush, that day. I had the distinct impression of being entirely amongst Blades outside the stadium. We certainly got there pretty early. My recollection is that, at first, the queue was orderly and good humoured. Then for no apparent reason, we were shepherded and corralled by police on horses, into a shapeless, disorganised and down right dangerous mass of humanity - men women and children. It was genuinely frightening. There was absolutely nothing any of us could do or say except to be edged towards the turnstiles, desperately trying to remain upright. When my mate and I finally got through into the stadium, we were soaked in sweat, top to bottom. My legs were shaking from the strain and effort.
I'm not usually given to melodrama but...How no one was seriously injured or worse, I'll never know. There but for the grace of God ..
As for the match, there seemed to me to be a fair few Blades inside. As it turned out, we had nowt to shout about at the end.

Back then I was lucky enough to go to most of our away games with my dad & uncle, who would come & watch me playing for the school in the morning before setting off for wherever we were playing, but on this day the school game was a much later kick off & I wasn't able to go to Old Trafford, much to my disgust. When they got home they said they too hadn't been able to get inside the ground & were locked outside with what they said was "thousands & thousands of Blades fans", also that they found it very scary at times & in hindsight they were pleased I wasn't there with them.

Just been sent this.

It's my childhood graffiti of 40 years ago on the wall of the house I grew up in and seems to have weathered well considering it was just a bit of chalk.

Strange you picked out Bill Brown, as when first seeing his boots I thought they looked like a pair I bought in '63. They look more 'advanced' than the Puma ones of which Jones & Blanchflower's believe are running spikes.

Thanks for that, place always looked well kept '53-58, could see inside, door open, on warm summer dinner time jaunts. Maybe you remember some of the regaled tales? If so could we be privy to the intriguing world of pre-war SUFC and BDTBL.

This feller could have a fight. Interesting story behind him as well, including allegations that he was a coward because he didn't join the army or something like that. It would have taken a brave man to say that to his face though 😉

Oh and, look at his gloves, must be no more than 4oz. Not much point wearing them to be honest.

😷
Jack Dempsey and is his opponent the big Italian who's name I can't spell. Believe Jack cut him down to size.
Ref. gloves - that's 'elf and safety for you.

You're thinking of The Ambling Alp, Primo Carnera. But they never fought. He was a few years later. Apart from Tommy Burns and Marvin Hart probably the worst heavyweight champ.

Thanks for putting me right and also to the others who did like wise. Always get mi eras mixed up but followed boxing from a kid, listening to fights on steam radio.
First I recall was Freddie Mills for either a European or World title. He got cut to ribbons and knocked to the floor numerous times but still kept getting up took a right beating, ref. stopped the fight eventually.
Another was Turpin, in London, when he beat 'Sugar Ray' for the world title. Then the disappointment, when getting ready for school, to be told he'd lost in New York. Remember mi mother saying Robinson beat him with a rabbit punch. Never went to see United but a true Blade. Know it's not true but that generations resilience, knocked down but get up again. Also suppose she didn't want me to go to school too despondent.

That will be just prior to those been coverted to the 'village' for the ill fated Student games wouldnt it ?
I remember the dog track round the back.
Yes, indeed. Coincidentally, I was later a volunteer for the World Student Games at the village itself.
I've no wish to drag up an old debate but that experience was absolutely brilliant at the time. As one of the organisers said, "If were going to have a headache, we might as well enjoy the party"
And, yes, there was also a dog track at the back in earlier days. I believe someone's posted a pic before somewhere on this thread. I never went.

He had more than a little help from the mob as well, allegedly 😉 Big bloke though, and I think he went on to wrestling when his boxing career was done.

Played in a few movies eg " Kid For Two Farthings". Never heard about mob involvement, but wouldn't be a surprise, think a few of his fights were fixed. The other boxer is Max Baer.

I started collecting boxers autographs a bit back, not necessarily the big boys but lads who I've had great pleasure watching over the years. Dave 'Boy' Green, Livingstone Bramble to name a couple but as well as them, I had to get Hagler and Hearns because of 'that' fight. Hagler was a machine, hard as rock and even the big punchers shots didn't bother him. One of the best jabs ever as well so what a fighter.

Hearns is on a pedestal for me though, him and Herol will always be my favourite fighters. Not saying they were the best but they were both awesome boxers, way different in style but for me they were entertainment all the way.

Modern boxing lost bit for me. The fitness levels are incredible but the game's got just a bit too showbiz 😷

Is that Marciano?

Fighting Harada, also, one of my favourites Tony. Fighting in the early sixties as a flyweight- Do you remember another Japanese fighter, Yoshio Shirai? He was prominent in the fifties and was the first Japanese boxer to wIn a World title, also Flyweight or, maybe Feather. Shan't ask you if you remember a Danny 'Bang Bang ' Womba- Black fighter from Nigeria who took on all comers at the Fairground just by Broad Oaks Bridge on Staniforth Road. (Just after the War (2nd). I didn't challenge him as I was only 8 or 9 at the time. Don't know what is there now but it was used as a Barrage balloon launching site in the War. Sorry I don't have a photograph.

The late, great Willie Pep. 241 fights and only 11 defeats. Now that's an impressive record.
