I find it laughable that a team can win a football match 0-4 and be deemed to have been battered.

There was only one team that got battered that day and it wasn't Scunthorpe.

We were the better side in the first half of the 5-1 defeat at L**ds in Sept 1974. We attacked a lot but L**ds scored twice against the run of play. We had a chance of a pull back when we were awarded a penalty before half time but Keith Eddy's effort hit the post.

People definitely mis-remember that game. We'd been served up so much shite in that season, that the mere prospect of us improving and actually looking like a decent side has translated into the fact we battered them. We didn't, we had spells where we were playing better than we had done all season and didn't take our chances. That was it.

The most one-sided against us that sticks out for me was Watford away in that same season. somehow only a goal down at half time depsite being down to 9 men. We never laid a glove on them and were luck to lose 3-0.

The most dominant I've seen us was the Port Vale home game under Wilder in league one. One of the few games I've seen United dominate a game from start to finish and make the scoreline reflect it. We had 4 disallowed goals as well. There was a few from that season where we dominated though, the Bury game at home was a relief when EEL got the last minute winner when we really should have been out of site.

Most frustratingly, I can remember a couple of occasions when we've really had the pigs on the rack in games and either lost or drawn. They're the ones that frustrate the most. The 0-0's at the Lane stick out and a couple of the defeats at Hillsborough we really should have taken something from. Even the 3-2 at home under Blackwell we nearly threw away, at half-time I can remember thinking this could be 5 or 6 we'd played that well.

Scoreline wise there’s obviously the 6-0s in recent decades, though on that screening the other week of the Spurs game Sheringham missed a couple of great chances. In contrast the 1-0 win over Northampton on NYE in the promotion season is the one I’d pick out. Such was the one-way traffic we were even prepared to bring the defensively woeful Done on at LWB as we knew there was no risk of that backfiring. A late and scrappy Freeman winner for us, but as one-sided a game as I’ve seen.

If I remember right LB the Oldham game was a replica a few days earlier should have annihilated em and won with a very late winner

We lost 2-0 in the 80s Cup game I think , it was in the away game in the promotion season I think we lost 5-1 Stuart Slater ran our young right back ragged ... can’t remember his name but his initials were CW ?

Anyone remember 4-0 defeat at White Hart Lane under Bassett? I was only about 8 at the time so an unreliable witness but i have a memory of spending the entire second half playing some sort of climbing game around the away end with my little brother as we were utterly played off the park.

Segway - I've just looked this up and it was 1990, not long after promotion, but i also noticed what a good record we've got against Spurs in the league considering they're a "top club" - played them 11 times in the last 30 years, W4 D4 L3

In my experience, the most one-sided game was against Rotherham in December 1956. We were 6th in Division 2, Rotherham were 4th from bottom. We had beaten them 4-0 at Millmoor, and had thrashed other teams near the bottom of the league - Barnsley 6-1, Notts County 5-1, for example. The game almost started in comic disaster, with Burgin running towards the goal at the Kop end as they kicked off, and a long-range Rotherham shot was heading towards goal as the Kop yelled at Burgin to look out, and he turned round just in time to stop the ball. Things got worse by the minute, and we ended up losing 7-2. M. Barrass at centre-half lived up to his name, and Joe Shaw was quickly restored to centre-half, and Burgin had a nightmarein goal, and was soon to be replaced by Hodgy. Not a happy day.

I remember us battering Wednesday at Hillsborough around 2002 and somehow managing to lose 2-0. Memories are hazy (given the 18 years that have passed) but I think Owusu got one of their goals and Pressman had a stormer, as usual. I think it was an early indicator that we were a decent footballing side in 2002/03.

We did indeed play them off the park. Tonge was literally unplayable and one of the best performances I saw him give in a Blades shirt. Seem to recall we missed a couple of sitters (Ndlovu?) and as soon as Owusu came off the bench I knew he would score.

Positives: Villa at home last season. Possibly the best I've ever seen us play. Scored 4 but it could have easily been 7 or 8...we would have beaten anyone on Earth that day. Also the 6-0 tonking we gave west brom under warnock.

Negatives: We got a lesson in football at anfield this year. They completely schooled us and we did well to come out of that at 0-2.

Dominated - 2005/2006 promotion season - 3-0 at home against Burnley one week after we'd beaten the pigs...we looked so comfortable that day and it was a pleasure to watch with zero jeopardy.
Outclassed, I would go for 2-0 loss at White Hart Lane - never laid a glove on them and for the first 30mins we were chasing shadows. Think it was Berbatov's debut. Could have been embarrassing if they hadn't taken their foot off the gas.

Was that home game v Sunderland, the one where Paul Beesley had a nightmare against Marco Gabbiadini? If so, I remember it well. I'd always liked Beesley up to that point and thought he was a good player, but Gabbiadini gave him, what in today's language, may be called, "a right arse-holing". In fairness to Beesley, I think he was a very good lad for us, but that Marco Gabbiadini was one hell of a player - few defenders could live with him - he was very fast and dangerous if you let him get anywhere near goal. I found a good YouTube clip here about him - and I think I spotted a couple of goals he scored against us in it?

No, that was Autumn 1990, the season when we didn't win until Decelmber. The 0-4 was Autumn 1998 I think. We'd had a good run and fancied closing the gap on them but they battered us. Only young Curtis Woodhouse got applauded off the pitch.

Yes I would go with the 6.0 loss to City as the worst - I went with a load of city fans and had arranged to give a lift back home (Manchester) to one of the guys but I left about 15 mins from the end when the 6th goal went in as I couldnt stand any more pain !!

Both us dominating and being dominated. It isn't necessarily reflected in the scoreline (there was a 4-0 home defeat to Scunthorpe where we were almost unlucky to lose).
In terms of United dominating, in recent years the 4-1 home win against Aston Villa, a couple of years ago, we absolutely pulverised them in the first half. In our 'Centurians' season in League One, we beat Bradford 3-0 and battered them. Going further back there was a 6-1 win against Chester City where we looked leagues apart.
Against us, I have to admit that the FA Cup Semi Final against Wednesday, they could have beaten us by three or four goals but for a superb performance by Alan Kelly. I also remember losing 4-0 at home to Sunderland, when Michael Bridges destroyed us and the game was over by half time.

That Sunderland game stands out for me. I was there and Niall Quinn was on fire as well. I believe Bridges even missed a penalty and they still hammered us.
