Most one sided games involving United

For ones I've personally witnessed, I remember a 5-0 midweek demolition of Rotherham during Warnocks reign, maybe 03/04. Rotherham could barely kick the ball they were that bad.
On the other side.. I was at the Emirates to watch us get beat 6-0 by Arsenals kids, as many have mentioned. That was pretty embarrassing.

Scoreline wise there’s obviously the 6-0s in recent decades, though on that screening the other week of the Spurs game Sheringham missed a couple of great chances. In contrast the 1-0 win over Northampton on NYE in the promotion season is the one I’d pick out. Such was the one-way traffic we were even prepared to bring the defensively woeful Done on at LWB as we knew there was no risk of that backfiring. A late and scrappy Freeman winner for us, but as one-sided a game as I’ve seen.

We had a very decent team at the time which included the likes of Woodward , Currie etc . but on the day , we were totally outplayed and outclassed to the point of it becoming embarrassing , resulting in a 4-0 defeat .

I still think of it as the finest performance I ever saw by an away team at the Lane . I've watched several other matches in which we suffered heavy defeats , but most of those were when we were crap so they so they came as no big surprise .

On this occasion , our decent side was made to look like a bunch of amateurs by what can only be described as an utterly brilliant performance by Cloughie's team that day .

Liverpool 2-0 Blades. January 2020 is one of the most one sided games i've witnessed against us in many a year.

Worst thing was that they nearly won it at the end from the volley. Anti-Football springs to mind!

We had a very decent team at the time which included the likes of Woodward , Currie etc . but on the day , we were totally outplayed and outclassed to the point of it becoming embarrassing , resulting in a 4-0 defeat .

I still think of it as the finest performance I ever saw by an away team at the Lane . I've watched several other matches in which we suffered heavy defeats , but most of those were when we were crap so they so they came as no big surprise .

On this occasion , our decent side was made to look like a bunch of amateurs by what can only be described as an utterly brilliant performance by Cloughie's team that day .

TC didnt play as he was recovering from the facial injuries he got from the car crash two weeks earlier

We were the better side in the first half of the 5-1 defeat at L**ds in Sept 1974. We attacked a lot but L**ds scored twice against the run of play. We had a chance of a pull back when we were awarded a penalty before half time but Keith Eddy's effort hit the post.

Could quite easily have ended 5+ that one.

Yeah that’s true thinking about it. Just watched the highlights again. If Barcelona second that goal we’d still be hearing about it now.



Not shown on there but I’m sure I remember Lundstram putting it wide when through on goal, which should’ve been his hat-trick.

Us dominating - Reading at home last year. They were horrific.

Worst ones against. 0-6 away at City. But the very worst was 0-4 at home to Sunderland. Michael Bridges embarrassed us

My Dad brought along his Derby supporting colleague with him that day who sat with us in the BLUT. He was understandably very chipper and kept offering 7 year old me some of his humbugs which I steadfastly refused, smug twat.

Mick Walsh scored a great hat-trick for them in the first half and it was 0-4 at half-time

Sir Keith scored for us but we were battered
Bob Hatton played for them

Not one of our finest days

Fulham at home not many seasons ago, Coleman was managing them. I honestly don't think we touched the ball for the first 15/20 minutes but didn't we end up somehow drawing the game.

Both us dominating and being dominated. It isn't necessarily reflected in the scoreline (there was a 4-0 home defeat to Scunthorpe where we were almost unlucky to lose).
In terms of United dominating, in recent years the 4-1 home win against Aston Villa, a couple of years ago, we absolutely pulverised them in the first half. In our 'Centurians' season in League One, we beat Bradford 3-0 and battered them. Going further back there was a 6-1 win against Chester City where we looked leagues apart.
Against us, I have to admit that the FA Cup Semi Final against Wednesday, they could have beaten us by three or four goals but for a superb performance by Alan Kelly. I also remember losing 4-0 at home to Sunderland, when Michael Bridges destroyed us and the game was over by half time.

I have to say that on reading the headline that the match that I thought of straight away was the 4-0 loss to Scunthorpe at home. We absolutely battered them.....and lost 4-0. Remember saying to my dad that I couldn't believe we had lost that game,

There were so many games in the 4th division that we cruised in 1st gear yet still smash the opposition. The Peterborough one was the best but we hit 4 or more numerous times and then just stopped playing. Halifax away we were 1 down in the first minute yet won 5-1 and barely broke sweat that day

Correct. We must be the only side that scored 7 at home yet were booed when they pulled it back to 6-2. 6-0 up with over half an hour left. I’ve never seen a Blades side think ‘job done’ so much it was embarrassing. We genuinely could have hit double figures if we had put the effort in

Pigs 1 Blades 3, the Bobby Davison game. Thought we fucking battered em that night. I was on their kop making new friends, and I remember being a bit twitchy, hoping that we wouldn't throw it away when I looked at the scoreboard. It was 10 last 9, 3 - 1 and I relaxed. Okay it was a derby match, okay we were at the sty but there was no danger. We were better than them, we wanted it more and when the final whistle blew and 7000 Blades started singing 'Always look on the bright side' it was something I'll smile about on my death bed

We played Fulham twice when Coleman was manager.

I keep hearing of this Scunthorpe game (I wasn't there), and am fascinated to watch highlights of it! I realise it's probably a long shot, but if anyone knows of any..

For the Fulham game, it may have been when they were managed by Jean Tigana? Seem to remember they were a very good side at that point

It's a complete myth.

I find it laughable that a team can win a football match 0-4 and be deemed to have been battered.

There was only one team that got battered that day and it wasn't Scunthorpe.

Even Martyn Woolford scored FFS.

Was that home game v Sunderland, the one where Paul Beesley had a nightmare against Marco Gabbiadini? If so, I remember it well. I'd always liked Beesley up to that point and thought he was a good player, but Gabbiadini gave him, what in today's language, may be called, "a right arse-holing". In fairness to Beesley, I think he was a very good lad for us, but that Marco Gabbiadini was one hell of a player - few defenders could live with him - he was very fast and dangerous if you let him get anywhere near goal. I found a good YouTube clip here about him - and I think I spotted a couple of goals he scored against us in it?

First game that came to mind when I read the OP was one a few years ago when we played Arsenal in the FA Cup at Bramall lane. We put out our regular first team and they played their reserves - and spanked us 6-0! That was a complete performance from them. I think we may have been a couple of divisions apart at the time - but I remember going into the game, hopeful. I remember also feeling a bit let down when I heard Arsenal's team sheet - because they'd got loads of young players in there and I was really wanting to see the big name players.

Those young players included: Theo Walcott and Eduardo. And those two, in particular, ran riot on the night.

Many years before that, I remember the 0-5 home defeat to Arsenal, the match where Alan Ball, sat on the ball, and John Hope was literally praying to God for divine intervention, because he just absolutely lost it completely. Poor kid - I mean, looking back I was probably like the majority of fans, feeling annoyed at Hope for being so incompetent - because that's what he was on that day. He missed just about everything, shots, crosses, the lot. The piece de resistance being when he went down, legs wide open, to stop a tame shot and it rolled straight through his legs into the goal. But I look back now and think the lad must have had something going on in his head, some kind of confidence attack - because that just wasn't normal to go to pieces like that.

He looked like the real deal, did Johnny, when he took over from Hodgy - 6' 2", good looking young lad - fantastic reflexes, athletic too. But ultimately, error prone to the point where he lost confidence in his own ability. I was sad to hear of his passing a few years ago - and the poor lad finished his life suffering from Parkinson's Disease as well. Not nice. He leaves us with some good memories though as well. But the 0-5 home defeat to Arsenal wasn't one of them.

No it was a midweek game in the Championship, as it is now, the year Sunderland went up. They won 4-0, I think all the goals were in the first half. I remember the game you mention, one of the most annoying games I have seen!
