A few more of alleys around Hartshead. Taken around March 1988
First, High Court: from Hartshead to High St. Both ends.

Below, the peculiar Aldine Court. From Hartshead end only.

The other end of this alley comes out on High street a little above High Court, through a narrow arch way/doorway. I didnt take a pic.
Google earth street view still walks you through both today. Not changed much. But I bet they were "interesting" in the real bygone days, along with all the other snickets around there....

Dove & Rainbow that brings back a few memories used to meet a lass in there I was knocking off at the time .. good looking bird but lager was fkg awful .. cant have everything eh or was it the gods tellin me to pack it in ?

Keep these coming mate ,its just like reliving my teens ,loving them.

Just noticed Laitners solicitors above the Dove ,that was the guy who got murdered by Arthur Hutchinson along with his wife and son. He moved onto East Parade outside the Cathedral I think ,although this was 83 so the timescale is confusing.

My mother used to work for Laitners

Here is a view of Waingate looking towards the Exchange St brewery. On the right is the Royal Hotel and Hotel Vaults which was a pub. Is this what you were thinking of?

Found my APOEC book. Ref. your above photo, APOEC just references Royal Hotel, no reference to Hotel Vaults. Maybe some discrepancy there, certainly says Royal Hotel Vaults but strange the interior seems visible from the street, opposite to dictates to licenced premises.
APOEC does however reference a Norfolk Vaults on Dixson Lane, positioned between The Rock and the Norfolk Arms same side of the lane. Not under the market hall as my memory recalled Apologies to all involved.
We must assume Mr D Lamb research is more extensive than ours and my memory is all at sea, possibly Biscay or Roaring Fortys. Certainly blown of course.
To summarise, the 'Cowshed' must be the Norfolk Vaults. When it closed, no idea, all I can say is APOEC was published 1996 with no indication to dates for Norfolk Vaults.

To be honest SEB, the Royal looks a bit fair to average, the Cowshed as it was nicknamed was reputed as its name suggest, an absolute shithouse. From the tales I heard the Cowshed was still trading late 40s to 50s, and maybe nearer the bottom of Dixon Lane area, nether the less, a very interesting photo, would what is or was the Bull and Mouth stand somewhere on theright-hand side

Didnt frequent it that much but in the odd occasions I did go in the Dove and Rainbow, all the women looked like weirdos. This would be probably early 90’s.

I used to drink around that side of town about 85-90 .. Golden Ball being my main watering hole at the time used to be a good craic in there always packed.
The Dove wasn’t one I went in that regular , only really went in at the time as the afore mentioned lass liked to meet there .
Blue Bell on High Street was another I’d only go once in a while as used to be by a few Weds fans that let’s say we didn’t see eye to eye , in fact the last time I went in there was around 90 ish , we were playing Boro and I gone to meet some of the lads in the Bell and about 30 Boro fans came in and the lot went up .
Used to meet for early drink in Barrow Boys then up to The Mulberry , then any combination of Legends , Three Tuns , Golden Ball , Stone House .
Pre marriage to this rogue Mrs JSWT being a hairdresser in town used to drink in all the the posers bars / club Henry’s , Metro , Josephine’s Cairo Jax .. .. for me it was Leadmill , Limit , Roxys , Isabella’s of that era ... fuck knows how we got together ..... often wish we hadn’t lol

That's a cracking photo XM657. I've never seen that particular shot in technicolor before. Can I ask where you found it?

Sounds like I may a bit younger then you but not by much. Started drinking round town as a 17 year old in the late eighties. Like you I often did the Golden Ball but also the Wig and Pen across the road. Generally fitted in the Fountain bar later in the night before walking up the old ramp to Roxys to see what the end of the night had in store 😀

After a couple of years tended to go up West Street into the Saddle and usually managed to get barred most weeks, however they always let us back in the week after with a warning to behave ourselves.

Avoided the limit due to the pig persuasion.

Was a regular in Silks in the early nineties.

Yes, you can ask but I haven't a clue, possibly Pictures Sheffield. When I've nowt to do I'll trawl sights like PS, Pinterest, Getty etc. Just like old photos, seeing my parents, grandparents and great grandparents generations. Big believer in 'a photos worth 1000 words'.
The photos put on from the glass negatives, absolute gold. Learn a lot from just looking at them.
Obviously look for owt to do Blades, also WW2, A/C and owt to do with what my life has passed through. Since having a computer find can recall parts of my life which have faded over the years, e.g. someone posted a picture, BDTBL match 1950's with good view of crowd. Faces aren't recognisable but good outlines of individuals, know it was where my grandfather stood and I'm 95% sure he is on it, means much to me.
Sudden thought could have been off here.

Tears of joy no doubt, seeing her son join such an august institution. As I alus say 'ye mams ye bestist ever friend'.
Did you join as a boy entrant? I had a mate went in at nineteen, Photography, did the 30. At present he's somewhere on the planet cruising.

Fucking iPhone & fat fingers !!! Very similar path Digs for me to 👍

Don't think so, just the Disney, Warner Bros. Directed by Fred Quinby, name that always amused me. Got the adrenalin rush from the cowboys, then a little later in life on the back row.
In't life great, not so much now but even so it's what you make of it.

It became the Cartoon Cinema after News Theatre. I definitely saw Superman cartoons there.

Lew Burgin's son had a ladies hair salon next to the barbers. My wife used to work for him and left after a couple of years and found out the robbing bastard had been deducting NI from her wages but not paying the stamp, he had to pay the lot in one go.

Cracking photo. Foreground, Austin Somerset next to a Ford Consul, to the left would be the King's Head, which had a revolving door at the entrance. The Bell in the square as it was known in the late 50s, once stood outside on the pavement with my Dad and watched the best fist fight I have ever seen. Wiggy's to the right, everyone had a telly on the strap at sometime from them and the GPO extreme right, going in there in that era was like going in Church, if you uttered a sound yer Mam would clip you round the earole.

Next to the bus is John Spencer's, think it was a Taylor's shop. Along the skyline would that be Pitsmoor flats, can't remember them looking that impressive

Sorry, I follow what you mean now seeing this excellent photo of Fitzalan Sq. Although the cinema has had many name changes it's always been "The News Theatre" to me and was when I did the Satdis circa 1951. In '51 all that was shown was newsreels and American cartoons. On Satdi mornings change of programme for kids. Presumably it was The Cartoon Cinema when you saw Superman some time after my Saturday jaunts.

Kings Alms, Commercial St. never went in but as you say revolving door which must have been unique for a pub. Sad story from long standing neighbor no longer with us. 1945 demobed with his mate celebrating victory in Kings Alms, hoky coky strikes up mate puts his hands on a lasses hips, husband objects fight follows mate knocks husband down, Husband dead mate goes down for manslaughter.

A lot of that went on in the past, had to keep your eye on it otherwise you got robbed. Good to know it all went well in the end. No doubt a Billy Big Bollocks.

Found this, looks like the same photographer, possibly the same day.
Just noticed your use of 'technicolor', never heard that term used with still photography only movie film. With your undoubted knowledge on this subject I wondered if I could learn something here. fitzalan sq 1960's.jpg
