Chesterfield are currently live-streaming a classic match on their YouTube channel. About 55 mins in, 1-0 down, Bryson has just missed an absolute sitter.

This is from 2 years before I started watching United I think, 1989 (assume old Div 3). No spoilers please.

Update. Bryson now equalises with an absolute belter into the corner.

The person filming the match is a workmate I have known since the mid 1980s. He now works 2 floors above me.

Just watched it. Hilarious Phoenix Nights bit at the end.

I hope his camerawork has improved since then! Though in fairness, a lot of the ball was in the air.

I could hear a few “cheerio” chants indicating a few had been kicked out.

Thoughts on the game:
  • when I started watching us, of Deane & Agana Deano was by far the better player. The opposite seemed to be the case at this time – Deane was mostly anonymous, whereas Agana was busy throughout and was unlucky with an effort second half that pinged against the ball.
  • This was obviously pre-backpass law coming in. I hadn’t really been aware before of the goal-kick tactic to play a one-two with a defender so that the keeper could kick from their hands. Was this to time-waste, or to help keepers like Benstead not to kick on a potentially dodgy pitch?
  • Bryson made up for that awful sitter missed with a peach of a goal
  • Mark Todd and Peter Duffield, who I’m sure had better times with us, looked garbage. Todd’s set-pieces were particularly poor in this game.
  • disappointing loss – Bassett out

That was appalling. I wasn’t aware of this game before now and, whilst expecting a defeat I wasn’t expecting that. Curran tearing us apart, Butlin scoring against us, Edwards missing a one on one. I don’t know how it could be much worse than that. What a pile of shit.

I don't know the result, but at a guess, based on it being a "Chesterfield classic", we didn't win!?

Shortly after Bryson scores you can see a pocket of Blades cavorting in the bottom corner of their main stand. We were sat just behind them . The Union Jack they were waving was emblazoned with ' SPIRE BLADES', which the locals appeared to have some sort of issue with.

I read in the Derbyshire Times after that Chesterfield game that a ridiculous amount of money was picked up off the terraces afterwards due to all the coin chucking.

Can believe it as I watched both sets of fans on the side terrace at it throughout the entire game.

Why would anyone want to watch that 6-1 embarrassment and that Cnut Curran playing for them too?

Bastards, why are they showing that ? Bastards :)

Fair bit of trouble in town after that if I remember right.

Was there that day. Chesterfield did the double over us and yet we got promoted, they got relegated. Funny season

Remember the Bryson hit and miss. Firstly beat the defenders, went round the keeper, got a fully open net and went to pass it in. And passed it just outside the post. Bit later hit a screamer from outside the area straight into the net. We played all over Chesterfield yet lost 2-1

Just finished watching it. Slow internet connection in our house.
Chico's penalty was an absolute bullet!

I remember a nasty crush on the way out of the away end that day.

For reasons he can't recall Bert sat in the Directors Box that day. It was not a happy day.

How's about this for a "tackle"!

Weren't many lows in the 88/89 season, but both games against Chesterfield were awful. Make no mistake, they were a dreadful team.
