Postpone, play behind closed doors or carry on?

The reason I get the arse about football being behind closed doors is the lack of consistency.

I can do my job from home, but the government aren’t telling employers to make this mandatory. So I’ll be in the office interacting with people from all parts of the country, but I’m not allowed to go to football!

If it’s such a big deal put the fucking country on lockdown! Don’t cherry pick which aspects of life we can and can’t do.

If you can do the job from home, then do your bit, and do your job from home. Why do you need to wait to be told to do so by the government?

In response to OP, YES. Shit will hit the fan very soon. We are are on the verge of lockdown for several weeks. What can we do? Nothing, nature will take its course. But we will come through it, fighting, strong and ready to go again. This season is already written off unfortunately. Sorry

Because it’s not as simple as that is it, I’m an employee, I can’t dictate to my employer. I can’t ring my boss tomorrow and say I’m working from home until further notice, when the government haven’t issued any advice on closing places of work.

Right, so you can’t do your job from home then, or at least not until your boss says so.

The company has a policy on working from home, the odd day is fine, but working from home for what could be a few months would obviously need to be agreed.

When the government hasn’t issued any advice on closing places of work, why would that request be agreed?

Stream matches? Are they suggesting we won’t get any money back as we can watch online?
Check the small print of ST contract , it will probably have some clause in there that protects the club from stuff like this out their control so they dont have to issue refunds . Its one of them things cant really blame the club they dont deserve to lose a load of money becuase of something not in their control

Your place seems a bit slow on the uptake, at the place I’m at it was all sorted over a week ago. We’re all working from home for the next two weeks (15 in my team).

Government take advice from phe and some workplaces are being advised by phe to take in turns working from home

That is what are place was initially going to do, split the team in half and one works from home one week, and in the office the next, but they’re using it as an opportunity to see if the team can be fully distributed.

Here are some facts...(based on estimates I should add)...

In recent years there have been two threatened pandemics that did not materialise, both from strains of coronavirus: Serious Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in 2002-03, and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) in 2012.

Neither of these outbreaks have been linked to any deaths in the UK.

The number of coronavirus cases in the UK, as at 2pm today, stands at 90.

The number of coronavirus deaths in the UK, as at 2pm today, stands at 0.

We have some way to go before this is anywhere near the severity of the swine flu epidemic of 2009. We didn't close down public events, like football matches, back then.

The Chief Medical Officer for England said today that there is a risk in taking such measures too soon.

It is, too soon, at the moment, to know what will happen.

And in less than a week it's doubled confirmed cases and 8 deaths. Anything to slow it until it gets warmer is sensible.

Here's the deal. They will make certain decisions (for eg football behind closed doors) and assess the impact. If there is a dramatic improvement from the package of measures, then they might not have to implement other measures (like mandatory home working). If the package of measures doesn't have the direct impact they/we are looking for, they will then escalate. Not everything has to be done on the same day. That's sensible, not inconsistent.

Mandatory home working is a very easy measure to implement would you not agree?

Seems to be happening a lot . My mate manages a team of 35 and he got word from phe to tell all his employees to work from home for 2 weeks and if anyone gets any onset respiratory symptoms they must report it to him and he has to then ensure that person stays off for another 2 weeks from when the symptoms end

According to the figures from Italy it's killing about 7% of infections which is extremely serious. Are the figures right? well the deaths probably are, the number of cases less likely, let's hope so in any case. One possibility that might be making it worse in France and Italy is smoking. It was always the case that even when smoking was really common here it went up another level in those countries and even today smoking is still more common there.

Not sure if we can trust the reporting of data in all countries but the death rate in Italy does look to be strangely higher than everywhere else even China (where smoking is very high among men) according to this breakdown https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/#countries

A bigger issue here for clubs if this goes ahead might be the sale of STs for next season, which usually begins around now doesn't it?

Seasons over in 8 weeks . Just carry on
Or close Meadowhall where large crowds gather or supermarkets. It targets old and the weak keep them away from gatherings. If people are worried don't go. But let the majority make up our own minds

Sir where did you study and why are experts worldwide not following your advice?

Sounds like games could be played behind closed doors as early as today. I guess my Newcastle ticket could be used as toilet toll if I run out!

Good, but doubtless people will moan that a football game is more important than containing/delaying a pandemic.

ive said on shoutbox. that just pause the season like Serie A. because whether playing closed doors or pausing the season. lower league clubs are still going to the wall. & English game has got plenty of money to help clubs pay the bills for a few months. & pick it up when things are safe again. whether thats May June July or August

they don’t know when the season could be paused to.

nobody knows. but Serie A has the right idea. suspend the league til its safe. playing behind closed doors is a stupid idea that helps no-one. delay euro 2020 til 2021. football games are nothing without the fans. carrying on without is pointless. because i dont see the point of completing for the sake of it just postpone it

then if you have to play more midweek games to catch these next 2 seasons so be it

So can factory workers, construction workers, hospital staff, transport workers stay at home for 2 weeks and get paid or only office staff?

I’d back myself to overcome the 0.5% risk of catching it followed by a 0.2% risk of death. pathetic draconian measures being put in place with zero grounds to do so. If you have an existing condition or you’re over a certain age then use common sense and don’t go, or go if you want to it’s completely up to you. But there’s absolutely no reason for the vast majority to not do so.
