The end of the League Cup

Anybody who supports a team that has finally found itself with a realistic chance of winning something after years in the wilderness, should not be wanting to scrap 33% of the available trophies. If you do, you're a bit of an idiot.

I will only accept scrapping it if they do a Stalin like re-write of history and all the winners have it removed from their roll of honour.

Anyone know when that great TV spectacular, 'War of the Monster Trucks' is next on?

UEFA:

There are too many fixtures, you need to scrap the League cup to ease the burden.

Also UEFA:

Uefa was proposing a Champions League containing four groups of eight clubs, as opposed to the current eight groups of four, meaning 14 games, some of which could be played at weekends.

F**k right off...

"UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has told The Times that "it would be better for everyone" if the League Cup was scrapped in England."
It would be better for everyone if UEFA stumped up 20 million quid as prize money for the English League Cup. 8lade.
There, we're even now.

They might reccomend cancelling it but the majority of english clubs will want to retain it.Cant see how UEFA can do it without the agreement of EFL & FA, maybe some clubs will agree but they will be in the minority probably the ones who qualify for europe every year.
Not a lot of money in it but especially EFL clubs see an opportunity to bring some cash in ! In the later rounds.

UEFA have said that they see no other option than to cancel the league cup to deal with fixture congestion.

Personally I dont think the league cup really means that much to anyone and never has done so I'm not that bothered. We never seem to have taken it that seriously.

Fixture congestion is bollocks and only relevant to the clubs in European competition. We seem to have barely played this season. The clubs complaining have big enough squads to deal with it, it’s just the likes of Klopp can’t be arsed to prepare for the games and be at them.

Sure, the League Cup is seen as a second rate competition but it’s given us a few good memories and we definitely wouldn’t dismiss its importance if we won it.

Surely playing fewer meaningless and boring Champions League group games would be a better idea.
Less travel for games few people are interested in, better for the environment etc.

The League Cup has been a waste of time for as many seasons I can remember. It's only purpose is to give game time to squad members not playing in League fixtures. For that it does at least make some sort of sense, and as a result it means extra fixtures but no fixture congestion as such. Except last weekend when we had a completely unnecessary weekend off.

The final should have been played midweek.

Those who think that smaller clubs make money out of the League Cup should think again. There's little money in it because the prize money is so pitiful. Those clubs make more out of the EFL Trophy which during the group stages produces record low crowds as so many fans boycott it due to the involvement of PL U23 sides - whose participation ensures the prize money is decent. So, in conclusion, football cup competitions in England are all fucked up.

although I agree that league cup is tricky matter because the money is shocking when you think maldon & tiptree got £11,000 more prize money for winning the fa cup 1st rd match than Leicester did for making the semi finals of the league cups. which makes progression case of great if you do but no bad thing if you dont. as isnt til 4th rd does things get serious & we could do with a 1 legged semi final at a neutral venue like before the new wembley was built

but its amazing that uefa want to cancel league cup for benefit of 4-6 clubs out of 92. if any bloated & pointless its the group stage of the champions league. its most boring & predictable part of competition. instead of home & away just have 3 games or go back to straight knockout. you will lose games there

Scrap the Carabao Cup, make the League Cup only for Championship, League One and League Two clubs. Bibitty Bobitty Boo!

It’s shithousing. The managers of big clubs moan about the fixture list when half of the problem is that we bend over for the TV companies (to make even more money), have a chaotic fixture schedule over the Christmas period, then barely play a game for two months. So UEFA bloke says ‘if you’ve got a problem, cancel your shit cup then’.

Think it,s probably inevitable league cup will be scrapped so pep and klopp can have more champions league money..greed is a necessity for clubs like that...

How would scrapping the League Cup get them more Champions League money?

So not the bottom 13-15 of the Prem? i.e. the teams who would really like to win it, and already play the least games out of all the teams in the country?

Downsizing the Champions League and UEFA Cup would make more sense. Who gives a toss about the early rounds of them.

Also, the Championship, League One and League Two playing 46 games a season is crazy. Downsize each league to 20 teams like the Prem

If they're so worries about too many games, then why do they have a Champions League where at least 3/4 of the entrants from the bigger leagues aren't Champions?

Has you seen how many matches you need to play to win the Europa League?

If there's fixture congestion, then they've caused it.

The two easiest moves for the EFL and Premier League are:

Either to completely relax any squad restrictions so Premier League teams are free to play kids and it becomes a defacto U23s competition for the big clubs.

Or

Exclude teams competing in UEFA competitions.

I'd be surprised if we don't see one of the above in the next 5 years.

So UEFA bloke says ‘if you’ve got a problem, cancel your shit cup then’.

Yes but he says that not from compassion and concern for our game, but so they can expand the CL to groups of 8 teams.

More teams and more games in the CL, means more money.......

...for UEFA.

Overhaul the international qualifications and cut down on the number of utterly pointless games that shut down the domestic league matches.

So not the bottom 13-15 of the Prem? i.e. the teams who would really like to win it, and already play the least games out of all the teams in the country?
Either way, it makes it virtually worthless. It would just be a Micky Mouse school sports day trophy.

So kick a load of smaller clubs out of the league for no apparent reason? I haven’t heard any league clubs moaning about fixture congestion, they just get on with it because the bulk of their money comes from gate money so reducing the number of games would just be detrimental to them.

The bottom 13-15 Premier League teams are more bothered about making sure they stay in the Premier League than winning the League Cup. Hence why we played the reserves for all the matches. You can't pin the League Cup's demise solely on the big clubs when the Premier League bottom clubs as well as the Championship clubs aren't arsed about it.

This is the same UEFA who are introducing a new unneeded "Conference" competition?
They'll probably get their wish, but it's fuck all to do with them and I'd like to see it stay.
If teams aren't bothered about it then put our your reserves, but Man City seem to be OK taking it seriously, plus it's all done and dusted by the start of March each year.

I watch European football because it’s there. I’ve got BT for the PL games. If there is ever a situation whereby you have to pay an additional subscription to watch it, I won’t bother. I suspect that’s their end game.

Football will surely go down the online streaming route eventually with the Premier League, Football League, UEFA etc. all providing there own platforms.

The Premier League is now surely big enough that they don't need Sky and BT anymore?
