UEFA have said that they see no other option than to cancel the league cup to deal with fixture congestion.

Personally I dont think the league cup really means that much to anyone and never has done so I'm not that bothered. We never seem to have taken it that seriously.

The traditionalists amongst us will probably disagree, I like the UEFA presidents turn of phrase: "you like things that have been there for ages". But what does it add? Does it even spread the wealth to smaller clubs that wel?

Yeah you're right.

When Jags scored that screamer against Leeds I didn't even get up out of my seat.

And when Che Adams scored those two goals against Tottenham I booed.

Surely UEFA couldn't just cancel a country's domestic competition. it would be up to the football authorities in the country concerned. Do you have a link to a news story detailing this alleged plan by UEFA?

Most teams tend to give their second eleven a run out in both cup competitions anyway, at least until the latter stages

Nothing to do with UEFA

‘Big clubs’ agenda, they can’t make enough money out of it so everyone else is under pressure to go along with what suits them.

Most clubs don't have fixture congestion, we have hardly played some months. I couldn't care less about Manchester City and Liverpool having ', too many fixtures' and hope they both get knocked out of the Champions League. The League Cup is important to the finances of lower league clubs. Unlike UEFA those are the clubs that I care about.

How about making it an 'opt-in' kind of thing?

I think that would in practice destroy the competition. Clubs can choose to play weakened teams, which increasingly they are doing. I do admire Guardiola who treats all competitions including the Community Shield seriously (I dislike Man City now for other reasons!). I would scrap the two legged semi finals, have it at a neutral ground, not Wembley though. What gets me is the big clubs complaining about fixture congestion, then flying across the globe to play friendlies whenever they can, or playing daft preseason tournaments that are meaningless. Let's listen to the views of Accrington and Crawley Town more and listen less to the views of Liverpool and Manchester City.

Remove the Premier League, let the EFL clubs play it among themselves. It's their competition, after all. Maybe they can then cancel the Autowindscreens as well. EFL can even play with it a bit more, invite the Scottish leagues plus another 14 clubs from Wales/Norn Iron to make it more interesting, who wouldn't want to see Airbus UK v Scunthorpe

How did "UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has told The Times that "it would be better for everyone" if the League Cup was scrapped in England."

Become "UEFA have said that they see no other option than to cancel the league cup to deal with fixture congestion."?

Anyone who watched the recent League Cup final between Villa and City will know it does mean a lot. It was the best atmosphere I've heard at the new Wembley. 40000 tickets apiece for the clubs unlike the FA Cup final. There have been some great scenes and shocks in the League Cup over the years aided by the fact the fixtures are at night under the floodlights. The fixtures are sparsely attended early on granted but if you reach the 5th round it kicks in.

In principle I'm not averse to shake up of the competition but not purely to accommodate few more pointless European games in far flung corners of the continent for a handful of clubs.

Plus its hardly like English clubs are at much of a disadvantage are they? 2 all English finals last year.

We wouldn't miss it though, yes we celebrate when we're in it but we're not that bothered if we're out of it. Scrap it.

Of course you would, we all would. However, if something had to go it would be the League Cup.

Something doesn't have to go though so we might as well keep it.

The big clubs still value it as a major trophy, evidenced by the past three winners. Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea.

I think that says more about the strength in depth of their squads. Anyway, agree to disagree.

Other way's to deal with fixture congestion for the poor dear's would be making all cup competitions knock out and doing away with the loosers from one competition being dropped into a different competition. FA cup & League cup winners into eufa, league winners and runners up into the champions league.

Clubs who think they have too many fixtures should be able to opt out of the competition before the draw is made. I imagine The League Cup provides much needed revenue for some lower league clubs, not that UEFA will be aware of their existence of course.

Anyway, we don’t take notice of European dictates anymore, we are our own independent sovereign nation, all hail The League Cup ✌🏻

I've said it before and I'll say it again - any team competing in a European competition is removed from the EFL Cup for that season. Either that, or as Ainsley Harriott has suggested, give them an "opt in" option. If it's that much of a ball ache to them they'll opt out anyway.
This is where it's probably heading until they are allowed to opt in to the league so they can concentrate on all their champions league and exhibition matches, but will still want their share of the premier league money. So for me they can foxtrot Oscar

It comes down to greed from the top end PL clubs, they just don't earn enough out of it, so don't want to be in it.

EFL clubs play 8 more league games than the PL with smaller squads, so I just don't buy the 'fixture congestion' argument. PL teams could easily play twice a week in the first few months of the season to avoid fixture build up, but the sponsors only want weekend games, so would put the blockers on that.

Just keep it as it is, teams can always put their U23's out.

Clickbait. 😉

"you like things that have been there for ages"

This nits the nail on the head for me. Just look at this season, no one was arsed about the League Cup (and the FA Cup by some) it was all about the Premier League, but as soon as anyone says we should scrap it, people moan.

Even if you win it I wouldn't be over the moon, even though I should be. It's just a competition that's belittled by the FA cup and is overlooked by practically everyone.
I don't know of any other country that has two domestic cups anyway. It will just make the FA cup more appealing, if scrapped.

Considering that there is hardly any decent reserve matches the League Cup is essential for those squad players trying to get a look in, and for years it gave youngsters a chance at first team experience.

The tickets are always much cheaper and for us there are more loyalty points so people can get on the ladder, if not have the chance to see the Blades for the first time if our PL matches are continuing to sell out like hot cakes.

I would scrap the JPT though and the Irish Welsh and Scottish League Cup and set up a similar format to the World Cup where you have three guaranteed games but make them local matches against your rivals.

Guaranteed income and games for clubs that people would care about, and if your team needs to focus elsewhere just play the kids.

We've all changed our tune on the League Cup, remember threads on here bashing it to death when we're in League One.

Is there anyone who is not foreign calling for the cup to be scrapped or a reduction in fixtures? The league cup has been largely destroyed by its own administrative body messing around with it until it's lost its appeal. It should be returned to a much more standard format and if a team wants to field a second string it should be allowed to (none of this U15 malarky).
Clubs that don't want to be a part of a nation-wide footballing family with the competitions that are organised to include them all should piss off in to some sort of European or global super league and leave everybody else alone.

I assume this is coming up now because France is scrapping its own league cup after this season and therefore we are the only "big" nation left operating one.
