I was looking back for a quote I made about not spending a million on a right back in relation to comments about Brayford on another thread when I came across this.

It's in response to a rumour about Wilder becoming our manager in April 2013.

If only Kev had listened to me then 🤣

Christ that thread is embarrassing for a lot of people looking back. Fair enough, no one can ever call things spot on, but the certainty with which some people were claiming Wilder wasn’t a good manager and would do terribly here. Worth remembering that when you see all the current threads about McBurnie, Sander Berge...
 
This, recounting my trip to Bury away

I found a reasonable spot to stand behind the goal, near the back, but quickly realised I had Mr Shouty-Singy man and his pals immediately behind me. I should have moved. I didn't. And my ear drums paid the price, for the first half at least.

We didn't start too well but I was reasonably pleased by the positivity in the away end. Good noise (around me anyway), an unchanged side from the one which eeked out an unlikely win at the weekend, and JCR finally realising that you don't have to beat a man 9 times before crossing, and there was hope.

But it soon became a bit, meh..... The ball went from side to side with no purpose. Occasionally JCR would find space from his two markers, I'd wait for the cross, but then he'd pass it inside and I'd find myself longing for him to beat his man 9 times. Jay Mac did almost stuff all to support him, and when he did receive the ball back, played a sideways pass to, well, nobody really.

Then Bury scored.

Half time came, my fag got wet, I couldn't be arsed queuing for a pie so went back to my seat to find Mr Shouty-Singy man had moved. Good. A quick, half hearted rendition of the GCB and away we went.

And so it began. The turgid, pathetic, boring passing from side to side with no attacking intent whatsoever. Apparently Bill Sharpie came on at half time but you wouldn't have known. The ball never got anywhere near him. And then we'd pass the ball sideways again when all somebody had to do was stop, look up, realise that Bury are crap, and run at them. Put them under pressure. Even Beardy didn't have more then 1 run at them. Pathetic. And turgid. And boring.

Then the fans got more and more agitated and started with a few sarcastic cheers for more sideways passing and long balls down the wings doing nothing other causing the receiving player problems controlling it.

George Long had a good game, thank goodness, otherwise we could easily have lost 3-0. At Bury. In League One.

As the game finished I wouldn't have been too amazed if some seats were flung at the lilly-livered limes, such was the anger and frustration among our fans. As it was I think the players got away quite lightly with boos and some animated gesticulating.

Then I fell over. My toes were so cold they were no longer able to keep my 16 stone of pure muscle in perfect balance. Marvellous. It looked like that would top off a perfect evening perfectly, but it was outdone by the ketchup escaping my burger and running down my new coat on the way back to the car.

That cheap, overly sugary, tomato based condiment showed more attacking intent than 11 footballers in Bury this evening. I should have stayed at home, put my feet in an ice bath and burned £22. The pain would have been over much more quickly.

There’s I guess a case that it might have been the wrong time for him then – how much did the Northampton challenges he had in his following job prep him for taking over the shambles that we were back then? Would we have ever seen Coutts play, or Sharp return? Would the amazing system we have now have emerged?

On a separate point, I don’t think I’ve ever heard Wilder speak about this near-arrival at the club. Would be good to hear sometime about exactly how close it was, and what his plans would have been with that squad at the time.

Also, Knill only became his assistant in 2014 (he was still managing Torquay in May 2013) so would we have missed out on him too? It could have been very different had he been appointed in May 2013 – and not necessarily for the better. The wait has been worth it.

40k To Wembley

This as been niggling me for years since the pigs done it but could we ever take that many to Wembley I know loads were part timers but do we have the part time fan base to take 40k I’m sure I read somewhere we struggled with 34k for the Huddersfield game.

May even have been David Frain's brother for all I know 😉

Edit: will be eternally grateful to David Frain for a winning goal against Leeds, in fact that's the only thing that I can remember about him
 
Back on Bladesmad I posted the suggestion that Ched should convert to Islam whilst in prison to curry favour with the Prince and that I'd seen someone else do this on Prisoners Wives ( a popular TV drama at the time).

Plenty flopped in the net dispite the utter stupidity of the suggestion, but that's the internet for you.

I've had a few good ones, comedy ones generally score more highly than those I consider sensible. I've thought all our managerial appointments have been decent or better bar Robson. I've called most signings correctly, the obvious failure I always go back to was Geary who turned out to be an incredible bit of business but I thought was a waste. I can look back and say I was right or wrong about things but one sticks in my head more than any other (and I know this is the opposite of what you asked for but) I remember suggesting United played in a DPM shirt of red, white and black; I reckon somebody had slipped me an acid pill before I came up with that cracker!

I have the utmost respect for him. He's a model professional, motivated beyond belief and a key reason we're going up. But he is simply not as good as most of our other players and I think better opposition will find him out. Hope I'm wrong though!
