Is it just me who has always wanted to see how Fleck would perform in a more advanced No10 role?

Don't get me wrong he's doing a fine job in that midfield 3 and McBurnie is now the first striker in the team sheet even if he needs a partner to play alongside so I wouldn't change it

But a midfield 3 of Berge, Norwood and Lundstram (maybe a little unbalanced as all right footed) with Fleck in behind a front man? Take away the defensive duties and give him a little more freedom?

It's where he started at Rangers

Yes I think it's probably just you.

Although, having said that, there was an old bloke who used to live in a house on the Haslingden Grane road, a few mile from Rawtenstall in Lancashire. He once told me that they should try Fleck up front, because that's where his uncle Robert used to be most effective. But, he admitted, he'd never seen him play.

It’s likely to be the formation next season. Berge is a deep lying midfielder who is playing RCM as it’s the easy one to adapt initially whilst he becomes acclimatised to our system. I think he’ll either sit deeper with Norwood next year or compete for his spot.

I don’t see us adapting too much our formation. Maybe tactical tweaks to fit the new players etc.

But to me defensively we look good
Midfield we look good with a few goals from their too in Fleck/Lundstram etc.

For me next season is mainly about a striker or keeping Deano.

Keeping Henderson should be priority, but we're being linked with 2 or 3 Turkish keepers of late?

Sweet Jaysus Robert Fleck! What a player he was!

He’s the new Kevin Philips

I'd like to see Fleck in that advanced role. He's our touch of quality in the team. He's been given more license this season and we've all seen the rewards. Does this mean reverting back to last season's formation though? Or something new entirely? Are we thinking Norwood and Berge sitting deeper together? Would that work?

Berge Norwood

Fleck

McBurnie
Mousset

For example

What COULD work is playing an attacking 5-4-1. Back 5 the same. Norwood and Berge as more holding midfielders, dictating play. Fleck and Lundstram both bombing on (even higher than usual) to support McBurnie as the lone striker.

But as others have said, what we have now is pretty good... and Wilder wants to play with 2 strikers. Just a thought though.

The great thing about our system as it stands is that when we do get the ball up front we tend to have 7/8 players up there with it anyway. The tweeks in the system come trying to get the ball up there depending on who we are playing.

p.s how great is it to be talking football tactics like this as a Sheff U supporter!!

p.p.s Happy Sheff U day fellow Blades... Hope we stuff fooking Brighton!

I'm not suggesting a change in formation as such.. I mean on paper when Mcgdoldrick plays he plays that No10 role.

I'd just like to see Fleck in that role at some point because I think he would excel, he has all the attributes

I’d rather keep the flat 3 and see Freeman in the hole. He can tuck in out of possession and really get on the ball and create things when we’re going forward. That way we don’t upset the left foot/right foot balance in midfield either.

Then we get Lallana on a free in the summer and those two rotate the number ten position.

To adjust for life in the top flight - which we are doing very well at, I think.

You don't just "adjust for life in the top flight" and become tactically set indefinitely. Things change and we have to change and evolve too.

I can see why people want to see a number 10 again, at least, in certain games. With the exception of the games against the top teams, we've struggled the most against teams with a low block, who sit deep - similar problems that we faced in league 1. A number 10 might help unlock tight defences.

I think this thread tunes in to the one thing that we dislike about Chris Wilder. It's why we don't have many Blades phoning football heaven it stops the whole 30,000 managers in the crowd and the OP poster misses it. The fact is we can only really enioy being a Blade and marvel at what is happening rather than offer alternatives like our whining porcine neighbors. I didn't think I would miss the tactical discussions with friends and my sons 'cos I thought it would always be thus. I do miss it, having the perfect manager and management team has its single downside, but it's a minuscule price to pay for the best 4 seasons of my Blades watching life.

I enjoy people offering up threads like these, our system and style is constantly evolving so no reason to assume that this won't be the case again next season. I see our biggest tweaks coming in midfield next season, I think we'll try to replace McGoldrick's role using midfielders with greater ball carrying abilities. I'm pretty sure we'll target another couple in this area.

However, I personally think Fleck is better when he's heavily involved in games. He sort of plays his way in, gets his eye in with a few duals & uses this as a springboard to contribute to our attacks. I like him when he gets on the ball & drives with it from deep. I'm therefore not sure you'd get the best out of him as a 10, picking it up in tight pockets and trying to work little corner turns & intrinsic passes. I'm sure he'd adapt to it & be decent, he's got the skills, but I think you'd lose a lot of him in that position.

McGoldrick plays as a striker who drops deep which means as well as getting involved in the build up play in midfield he also plays with his back to goal and challenges for a lot of headers. I don’t think Fleck is really suited to that and is better making runs from deep.
Personally, I don’t think any other formation would get more from our players than the one we’re using.
