This time last season I was saying maybe we need another season in the Championship and it's too soon for us to be promoted to the Premier League.
How wrong was I!
A couple of weeks ago I was thinking European football next season could ruin us as we don't have enough depth in the Club. Then I started to think, no why not, with the management team we have why couldn't we give it a go. Bring it on!

The main priority is to stay in the prem league. That’s the only target that matters this season. If we qualified for Europe , it would be akin to Leicester winning the title a few years ago or if we win the fa cup the same. It’s turned into a fantastic season already. Why did Wednesday only play 38 games? If Palace went down after playing 42, that implies there were still 22 teams in the PL.

PL increased to 22 clubs for 1990-91 season and then it was reduced to 20 clubs again for 1995-96 season

Sorry, I meant increased to 22 in 1991. If the PL had stayed with 20 clubs then Wendy wouldn't have got the 3rd automatic promotion spot.

I’d forgotten about that. Apparently there were 22 clubs when we went down. I have no recollection of it being increased.

If we end up in the Europa League then we deserve to be there and I am sure the club will take it in it’s stride. We should take everything we can get while we can. Our points tally means we can have a serious go at the FA cup and depending on the draw who knows how far we can go. If we did get in the Europa I would almost just run two squads, that would nullify the early start and the drain on our Premier League players. With two new wing backs an extra centre back, another striker and a midfielder if we don’t keep Besic I think that would work. Depending on the two loans we have this January. Use it to give games to those not in the Premiership team and even some of our youngsters like Norrington Davis.

I agree with this. If we get in the qualifiers then use them instead of pre-season friendlies to get the squad match fit and then if we did qualify for the group stages, just use the shadow squad as we've already just about got a full team of players who basically aren't getting a game. And obviously we'd be looking to strengthen in the summer anyway so the 'back up squad' should be stronger, in theory.

I don't think for one minute that Wilder and the team are thinking 'oh I hope we don't qualify for Europe because we'll have more games to play'.

Silent you are right Palace before PL was cut by 2 clubs, I'm certain that since we went down with 38 points in 07 no relegated team since has matched or bettered it. Also in 93 pigs needed 1 point from last 7 games and lost the lot culminating in 3-0 defeat at the Sty to Florist, whilst we were burying Leicester 5-2 May 5th 1990.

Stop being deliberately controversial FFS. Still at 40 points get us home. Anyone who isn’t needs to look at a league table from 3 years ago.

points spread mate , when the top clubs get 98 and 96 the bottom clubs like last season get less hence 36 points saving brighton
the seasons when 38 or 40 were needed the champions only got 89 points and runners up 86

those 20 points were shared out amongst the bottom clubs

looks like liverpool will get over 100 and city could still get 90 so its more probable the bottom 3 wont get 36 again

you cant have more points at the top and bottom unless theres a dramatic drop in drawn games which isnt happening

theres only 380 games a season so if no draws a max of 1140 points but every drawn game loses a point theres usually 240 and 300 draws every year so as total of 900 to 960 points per season shared out if the top 2 take nearly 200 thats only 700 to 760 between 18 clubs

Im of the “get to 40pts mark ASAP and see where we go from there” mindset. Not negative, just the first thing to tick off. Bournemouth and Brighton at home are very winnable, so we could (should?) crack that barrier by the end of February; which would be a huge achievement in itself.

Getting into the Europa league is a weird one; would be a huge challenge to get a squad ready for it. Its such an early start in the season that it can knacker the league campaign up from early on. Plus theres not (comparatively) that much money in it until the latter stages. On the flip side, it raises our profile, helps attract a new level of player and would no doubt provide some great nights at the Lane and away trips. So I’m 50/50 on it.

But nicking 4th place? Fuck me- Champions League IS game changing, both financially and the prestige of it. If we have a sniff of that, we have to go full throttle for it. That could set us up for a loooong time.

If you hit 5th place, don't you enter the Europa league in September? It's finishing 6th that means you start in July.
