I don't get the anger. Is it your money? Players have contracts. Some work out, some don't. For every £ we are paying Holmes for fuck all we are getting tens of thousands of value per week by having JOC, Fleck, Mousset etc on deals thst pay them less than if they signed the right now

I’d also expect him to be looking at the possibility of getting a longer contract elsewhere as at the end of the season, as it stands, he’ll stop earning. It will be for a lot less but he could negotiate a payoff that would cover some of what he’ll lose. As it looks like he’s not going anywhere, that makes me think there is some kind of injury issue.
 
You can't really blame any player if they are getting a good pay day, I just find it disappointing to see players who are good enough to play at professional level choose to rot in the reserves of a team instead of play week in and week out.
 
Calling Ricky Holmes a wage thief really get a grip ffs the lad had injury problems plus the fact we got promoted quickly from league and the championship too and the transformation was rapid it is not his fault so calling him a wage thief when he was offered that contract is embarrassing quite frankly.
 
I suffer from a bad back and have done for years, it comes and goes and ranges from severe pain to niggles but imagine having to train 5 days a week also you get pain memory so you feel like theres a pain when it’s your brain playing tricks and you end up tensing up which then brings on back pain so I sympathise with his problem.

He had a contract under the end of this season. We released him for Cambridge to pick him up. He signed a 3 1/2 year deal January 2017 Apologies, badly worded - I meant re; Carruthers signing for Cambridge as he’d been released (by mutual consent, ie paid up) and needed a club!

Totally forgot about him! Last i can remember was him in some type of pre-season video getting out the pool like some type of model and think wilder praised him for how hes come back a better player then heard nowt since!

As for his contract, same as Dean Hammonds.. clubs fault, its what happens! He could have come, hit the ground running and then we would have been in a situation where he was 'tied down' and we were all happy! Got to wonder if some of the players we have currently wernt on the length of contracts etc they are on would they have already gone elsewhere?!

Apologies for responding to a comment from a couple of weeks ago, Danny, just catching up on this thread now: do you know for certain that he trains at Shirecliffe regularly? I'd just assumed that he was either too unit to train, or perhaps trained individually with an injury rehab specialist, or something along those lines. Have you seen him there?

I honestly believe Ricky Holmes was a bit of a mystery. He always seemed to do ok and make things happen when he came on. I remember Wolves fans even picking him out as our best player the season they went up and thrashed us at Molineux. I feel Wilder must have made his mind up based on what he saw in training as he didn't seem to get the same amount of time on the pitch as Leonard or Lee Evans who we can write off and say they just weren't good enough. So was Holmes no doubt but just weird how I never felt like that based on his on pitch performances.

That debut at Wolves seems to get better and better with every year that passes. He was the best of a bad bunch – we were awful that day. When introduced off the bench in the handful of other games he had little to no impact from what I saw.

I didn’t rate it. I got the impression he wasn’t doing as he was told, not following Wilder’s instructions and plan.
 
I stick him the same box as Carruthers. Was bought to replace Duffy but ended up spurring Duffy on to greater heights so never got in the team...

And as has happened to numerous others, the trajectory of the side/club has far exceeded them.

Pay him up and let him go back to mid-table championship which is his level...

I will be amazed if any Championship club picks him up. Given his age and lack of games, and the fact he hasn’t done anything of note at Championship level, he’ll be fortunate to get a League 1 club that takes him. Coutts is a much better player, with evidence of actually playing well at Championship level, and he had to settle for Fleetwood.

Why pay him up? Is he toxic? I don’t get all this ‘pay him up’ stuff. As it stands, we’re obliged to honour his contract so we have to pay him in full to get rid. The only way that will change is if he can find another club and we can do a deal to pay him, say 60% of what we owe him, which he might accept. If he was offered a really good contract then he might even just agree to cancel his contract for nothing but I don’t think it’s likely because he won’t get anything better than a short contract from a lower league club.

So, if we have to pay up his full contract to get rid, how does that benefit us? If anything, it messes with our cash flow. We’d be better off loaning him out to a club that would pay 10% of his wages than paying him off in full.
 



His wages will also have increased with our promotion to the PL. There is usually a hike if a club gets promoted, so he'll now be on top end Championship level wages.

No way is he going to let go of that kind of money easily, when the end of his career is just around the corner.
