Yes, I live near to where he was brought up. There's a signed framed picture of him in my boy's old junior school. I met someone who works in a golf club where former Newcastle players go including Rob Lee and Steve Harper. Not Shearer's usual club but he went with them and took exception at being asked to pay for a round. "Don't you know who I am?" or words to that effect. The guy responded "of course I know who you are Alan, you'really one of my heroes but you do have to pay". Shearer threw the money down and one of other ex players seemed embarrased and gave the guy a tip

I think he plays near me at Close House these days.

Just reviving this thread to save creating a new one.

Has anybody been to or spent time in and around stockton? BiggerBladeThanThou might be able to help here.

It looks like I might be offered a job there and I won't have the opportunity to visit the area before deciding if I want to accept or not.

Just my wife, myself and my dog, no kids. We like getting out at the weekend, going walking, taking the train into the nearest city (Newcastle or Leeds i expect) for the day and we like the countryside. Would the surrounding areas be ok? I'd be working near to Thornaby train station so was thinking Yarm might be nice? Thanks in advance for any advice.
