Anyone know what the situation is with this wage stealing thief? Up there with the worst signings Wilder has made and one that seemingly won't fuck off. Contributed nothing to this club over the past 3 years but still taking a wage.

In fairness to him, he looked ok on the few occasions he played and it sounds like he just can’t get fit. His career is probably over.

Isn't he one of those that has ties with reality tv "stars" from that Essex program? Maybe I'm mistaking him for someone else.

Is he still on our books? Jesus.

I can only guess he signed a contract on decent money which included a pay rise if we get promoted.

Meaning he would now be on much, much more than he'll get anywhere else and is happy to see out his contract towards the end of his career.

His last two loans were both cut short by injury. The last I heard was that he was still struggling with a back injury. Prior to joining Utd her was a bit of a crock as well so I'd assume his career may well be done. Shame as he was a lovely player on his day.

In many ways its sad that it never worked out, but the club moved way too fast for him and we were stuck as he either couldn't get a decent move or injuries prevented it. He's been up for sale since the summer

According to this from the Official Site, he signed a 2 1/2 year deal back in January 2018.

It means that he will be released in the summer or paid up now.

I feel for the lad really. Footballers want to play football. There are very few that just want to sit and take the money

He has had injury problems and he hasn't had a look in. But what would you do in Holmes situation when you have a contract with the club? I wouldn't voluntarily give it up and be out of pocket. At the end of the day, we agreed a contract with him and we should honour it (if we can come up with a mutual agreement to cancel his contract that would be best). But what evidence do we have that he is a wage thief? I haven't heard of any criticisms about his attitude.

Most people would do the same as him 1973Blade - they'd be mad not to. I can go back to when Wilder took the job - I looked at that Northampton Town team to see if there were any players there that Wilder might one to bring with him? This lad Holmes stood out. He'd had a great season for them and looked an attacking threat. Then I saw him play against us at the Lane for Charlton. If I remember correctly, he tore us a new one and scored a good goal. He was a threat for most of the game that day. So I was pleased when we eventually signed him.

We've not seen much of him since then! I think it was Wolves away, when we got easily beaten 2 seasons ago, when I last saw him play. And I thought he was our best player in that game - lots of energy, getting on the ball, and attacking. I thought it strange that Wilder didn't pick him more than he did - and I remember some comment from Wilder about "individual" v "team"- which I think was aimed at Holmes. He was a bit of a maverick (but I like that and I think sometimes it's exactly what you need in some games). It's never been made that explicit why he's not played, which is a bit of a shame really as some folks will no doubt jump to the "wage-thief" conclusion. But he is approaching the end of his career and I don't blame him one bit for sticking in there and taking a much higher salary than he's going to get anywhere else. If the club don't like it, they shouldn't have engineered it - and they can always pay him off.

Sorry I might have missed it, but you feel sorry for the lad yet I haven't seen any evidence that he does want to play football. He could still play football if he wanted to. For example if he's on 18k and Charlton only wanted to pay 4k, I wouldn't imagine under the circumstances we wouldn't let that happen over paying his full wage.

I feel sorry for him for two reasons...
  • Injuries - seems to have had a lot recently and has either prevented a move or made it difficult to get in any shape to earn one.
  • Circumstances - He signed for us when we were the league above Charlton and probably for a slightly increased wage and it was, i think, the highest level he'd played at. His wages now will most probably be higher again and given that our average wage at the start of this season was £9,000, i would put him in a bracket at around £6-8000. At the very best that means he'll be earning £416,000 a year. He's 32 years old. He was expecting to join a team which was going to be in the upper half of the Championship... things changed and then he was no longer good enough for where we were going

If you had moved to a new job for a better salary and better prospects, from a stable one on reasonable salary, then the company changed the goal posts, wouldn't you stick it out and just do the job.

I'm in a position at the moment where the job i am in is well paid, but i have no possibility to progress. So I am looking around and i've had a few opportunities to move, the money wouldn't be as good, the position would perhaps be better, but when you weigh everything up, its not worth the move. It doesn't mean that i don't want to work and be at the top of my game...

I'm not about to speculate about that him or any other footballer doesn't want to play first team football, but i'd say that most footballers want to be at the highest level, earning their maximum wage as near to the end of their career as possible. I understand that the Footballers pension rules changed a couple of years ago and instead of receiving their pension at 35, now they receive at 55.

Where's the evidence he doesn't want to play football? Don't know your personal circumstances but have you never been unfit for work? Illness? Injury? Did you decline your sick pay? The lads done nothing wrong at all.

There is no evidence, however Carruthers is playing for cambridge and the same rule applied to him. Do you know how long Holmes is injured for?

No. What has Carruthers got to do with anything? What rule?

I can’t believe we have given Chris Wilder another 4 year contract after he is responsible for jeopardising the clubs future by giving wage stealing thieves like Holmes contacts like he has., and signing the bottlejobs who tried their best to throw away promotion last season. I’m discustard

Well Carruthers received 2 promotion wage rises the same as Holmes so he was on a good packet when he went to Cambridge.

So I am guessing when Holmes is injury free he can find himself a club and we can pay a % of his wage.

Let me know if you need me to draw pictures.

Carruthers was out of contract, so didn’t have a great deal of choice. Holmes is not

Dont be facetious. We've just signed Rodwell. How do you feel about his behaviour regarding his time at Sunderland?

We should sack him

Why shouldn't he take a wage ? Wilder and the board agreed a contract with him which should be honoured. It is not the player's fault that Wilder doesnt think he is good enough for the team

I thought I drew it out for you in my comments about Holmes.
What you've done is comment on something you know fuck all about. It's fine to have an opinion on anything at all but be prepared to be taken to task over it. What colour do you want?
