Player Suggestion Luke Woolfenden

Interestingly, the Blue Monday Pod are talking about how Paul Lambert went to watch us vs Fylde. Next League game, two of the 3 centre-backs bomb forward and set up 2 of the goals. Bloom is pretty clear that it’s not the same as our system, as no patient build-up, but interesting none the less that they seem to be applying some of our ideas. They’ve even bloody got someone called Norwood in their team!

Replacement?

Ipswich have confirmed the signing of Josh Earl from Preston on loan until the end of the season.

✍️ Town are delighted to confirm the signing of Josh Earl on loan from @pnefc until the end of the 2019/20 season.

The left-sided defender will wear the number 3️⃣ shirt during his time at Portman Road.

I don’t know and haven’t seen the player. But it does seem to tick a lot of boxes. Young and English with a resale value at the ready even if he doesn’t cut it.

Plays our system wouldn’t cost the world.

Starting to get excited about a player I’ve never seen play.

Interestingly he sets up the first goal for Ipswich with a very JOC-esque overlapping run down the left from LCB. Excellent late run, well picked out, cuts it back with his left for a tap-in.

Looks like it’s cover for JOC to replace Bryan. But, and as pointed out by Bloom, he’s not left-footed! And we know Wilder insists on that for this position. Perhaps Woolfenden is equally comfortable with both feet. Which as a backup centre-half would be pretty useful to cover both Basham and JOC...

See if they will take Bryan as part of the deal.

I can’t believe Bryan is being linked to championship teams, he’s L1 at best. Any average team he’s come up against he’s struggled badly, in particular Sunderland.

I will say this about being in League 1, it does give you the freedom to try and ideas as a manager.

It's too early to make a decision on that he hasn't played often enough yet as his 1st year was ruined by injuries .Hes now fit and trying to make a career for himself.

Although I agree with a lot of what you’ve said, he has been shocking in every game I’ve seen of him inc this season.

The best ‘game’ Ive seem him have was vs Chesterfield pre season. I think he’s definitely going to have a career, but I don’t see it any higher than mid to low end championship and he needs league one experience now to get to that level.

I've not seen anything of this Woolfenden guy but after going onto Twitter and listening to Benjamin Bloom and his colleagues on their podcast, they all seem to rate him very highly and say he has all the attributes to be a quality player. They reckon he could be snapped up for around the £2m mark. Would be worth a punt at that price, surely.

This lad from Ipswich isn't a household name of course, but apparently he's taking Ipswich by storm from what I've read, but also from what I've heard first-hand from a mate who is an Ipswich fan. He's only a young kid, but he's built like a brick shithouse, 6'4" tall and he's not just defending but also creating chances for the team all over the field of play. Sounds absolutely great to me and I hope we sign him. If so, you'll be seeing in our first team in the second half of this season.

I think me and you know the same Ipswich fan. He called me earlier to say "hands off our best player"

Basically said everything you've said above but also he said he was LEFT footed. Said he gets forward loads and sets goals up.

He reckons he's at the same level that John Stones was at his age and it's only a matter of time till he's at the top of the PL

Left footed? Oh no! Don’t want him then. ;)

Not wanting to doubt your mate, but I’d be surprised if Bloom and two other of his Ipswich associates were wrong yesterday when they described him as right-footed. in terms of him bombing forward and setting goals up, that on Saturday was seemingly the first time he’d done that (they picked his left-footed pass as being particularly impressive given it was his wrong foot) as they’ve only just switched to this formation. He has one other assist for the season, presumably not of the same type if he was playing in a central two.

Most other sources seem to describe him as right-sided too. Though as I said above, he is currently in Ipswich’s LCB role, presumably because he’s comfortable enough with his other foot. But we know Wilder prefers a lefty there, which is why Cobbaut looks the likely person to compete with JOC.

East Anglia Daily described him in the summer as follows: Luke Woolfenden, 20, has enjoyed a super development year on loan at League Two club Swindon. Stepping up to League One looks to be his most natural next step. He is quick, comfortable on the ball and could be right up Lambert's street. He's a right-back option too.

Well it is bit harder when you have the likes of McEverely and Sammon to work with.

You'd have thought inheriting those two clowns (plus several others) would encourage Adkins to come up with hundreds of ideas to reshape the squad. However, I understand (from someone on the Board at the time) that he had a grand total of one player on his list of targets for the JTW - Dan Burn.

I'm still amazed at how bad he turned out to be considering the good jobs he did at Scunthorpe, Southampton and recently, Hull.

He was just a puppet regime and Brian Laws was pulling his strings.

He is exactly the profile of the sort of signing that is successful a large percentage of the time.

It’s interesting looking at the Ipswich reaction to this rumour on their forum. Demands that they hold out for £8m vs acceptance they’d probably accept £2m as it’s good money for a League 1 club. It’s genuinely like heading back in time to our League 1 days.

Not only that, but they're all agreed that we're the perfect club for him; both in terms of how we play and our management/squad. They seem pretty resigned to him going.

Reports from their end local papers suggest a 3m offer is imminent they also suggest a 7m offer is imminent for Coubatt (or however you spell it).

Getting these 2 players (never seen them) would bulk out our defensive options and I would say is a fantastic window for us.

That particularly stood out – along with comments along the lines of working for Wilder being an excellent opportunity. Think I said it last season, but the increasingly levels of respect from fans of Ipswich, a club I historically have disliked over the years, is taking quite a lot of getting used to still.

Agree Loughborough, one of my favourite matches ever was the second leg of the play offs at their place in the late 90s where bizarrely our fans were at both ends of their stand. It was a 2.2 draw and we went through on away goals.

I think their hatred of us started back then. Memories fading but I think Simon Tracey was sent off in that game.

Kelly played on injured in that game (which was why Tracey played in the final). While the playoff semi occasion might be a source, mine is very much localised around Mauricio Taricco getting three separate United players sent off in 3 matches.

Know very little about him but seems to have just broken into the scene for them. They seem to think he’d be worth a lot more on the next few years and don’t want him to leave so could be a bargain.

I think we are as well trying a 4/5 punts from champ/league one. We really only need one or two to work.

Probably the type of signings we need to look at given the shortcomings of our own academy over the past few years.

🤤

Reading those comments by Ipswich fans, it's clear that the player has great potential, so to recruit him at such a young age makes enormous sense. Let's hope that we sign him, that his potential is realised, and that we bag a bargain in the process.
