It really shouldn't have, if you watch the replays his arm changed the direction of the ball, Egan headed it and it was going across the front of Rice and to relative safety, his arm made it go in front of him, as hand balls and VAR goes, that one was absolutely spot on

I'm quite happy that it's them that got stuffed by it, but the rule is stupid and I expect it to change for next season.
Also I agree with Gary Neville's comment, this isn't VAR, it's the new rule. No one can blame VAR, it just spotted it, the rule itself is what caused the goal to be disallowed.

The new rule aside, it would have to be deliberate for it to be hand ball, it makes no difference if it controlled it (unless the rules have changed since I last looked). There's no way that could have been deliberate.

The new rule aside, it would have to be deliberate for it to be hand ball, it makes no difference if it controlled it (unless the rules have changed since I last looked). There's no way that could have been deliberate.

The whole point is though is that it doesn't have to be deliberate. I disagree with stupid decisions where it doesn't divert the course of the ball, or brushes against someone's arm and continues on its path then fine but when it contributes towards the play and changes the outcome completely then it has to be given as a handball.

Slightly hypocritical I know, can't have everything but personally, I'm all for that kind of VAR decision be it for, or against us and is exactly what VAR should be used for.

As far as I was aware, it has to be deliberate to be hand ball. Maybe they've changed the rules - so many changes I can't keep up - I'll check it.
 
Really harsh on West Ham. Much like the referee's intervention vs. Man City that cost us a goal, sense wasn't applied to the 'rule'. That being said... we've had enough dodgy VAR decisions go against us, so let's enjoy the 3 points ⚔

This is the new rules taken from the FA website. As far as I can see, had the move not led to a goal, the first point under "NOT" would have applied:

Law 12 - Fouls and misconduct (handball)


Deliberate handball remains an offence. The following ‘handball’ situations, even if accidental, will be a free kick:


  • the ball goes into the goal after touching an attacking player’s hand/arm
  • a player gains control/possession of the ball after it has touched their hand/arm and then scores, or creates a goal-scoring opportunity
  • the ball touches a player’s hand/arm which has made their body unnaturally bigger
  • the ball touches a player’s hand/arm when it is above their shoulder (unless the player has deliberately played the ball which then touches their hand/arm)

The following will NOT usually be a free kick, unless they are one of the situations above:


  • the ball touches a player’s hand/arm directly from their own head/body/foot or the head/body/foot of another player who is close/near
  • the ball touches a player’s hand/arm which is close to their body and has not made their body unnaturally bigger
  • if a player is falling and the ball touches their hand/arm when it is between their body and the ground to support the body (but not extended to make the body bigger)
  • If the goalkeeper attempts to ‘clear’ (release into play) a throw-in or deliberate kick from a team-mate but the ‘clearance’ fails, the goalkeeper can then handle the ball
 
Its not that it was deliberate hand ball it was handball which gave the player the advantage. If you look it hits his arm and goes forward the way he is running. If it had not hit his arm it would have gone to his left and he would have lost control of the ball.
