Good player. People are writing him off after seeing him in bit n pieces. He's "become a thing". Even the "trust in Wilder" cultists don't defend him now. He's a BashamCouttsLundstram -a-like. He's here. Now. Might be needed. Gets my support. Good player.

Always thought he looked good technically and rusty in terms of competitive play... I think the problem for a lot of commenters is, he's come from City and people expect to see something stand out and grab them, rather than a player looking like he needs more game time to get up to speed.

I’ve got nothing against him, and wouldn’t rule him out either improving in the future or making a successful career elsewhere. But for me, when I’ve seen him play he still looks like a player we’ve just signed and is playing our system for the first time, rather than someone we’ve had training with the squad for a year and a half now. Watching Sunday’s game, one of the first things he noticeably did was to midway through a typical patient build-up smash a ball at goal from about 30 yards – something none of the first choice centre-backs would have attempted. It wasn’t even remotely close. More generally, he just doesn’t seem to do the basics of the role – he’s neither a good tackler asked to pass more, nor a good passer asked to tackle more. It’s not an easy position – we could sign an established centre-back and they might not adapt well to the asks required. But he’s had a year and a half of watching JOC in the role under little pressure, and for me doesn’t seem to be getting it anywhere near as quickly as we’d hoped. The next player we try there might not either. But I think it’s time to move him on to try another person in the role that might be a credible back-up – as Bryan is not.
While Rodwell seemed to understand and attempted to play our system Bryan despite being here longer does not seem confident enough or capable enough to do so.

Am I getting this right? People who've seen him play at most a handful of times at LCB saying he's not suited there, but NEVER having seen him in a back four saying he'd be suited there. Superb......

Genuine question here …..
Do our reserves play the same 3-5-2 formation in competitive games as the first team or do they have a different system?
UTB & FTP

Same system, but Bryan never plays.

Exactly, the U23s aren’t the reserves – Wilder’s recently been pretty vocal over what he considers to be a big mistake in scrappy the reserve leagues, and the likes of Bryan are therefore limited to training and the occasional behind-closed-doors game we arrange for those not featuring much in the first team. It’s no wonder he’s not really developed the past 18 months.

No, he isn’t. You’re allowed over age players, he could play. What Wilder is talking about is that the u23s is a pussy league where almost any contact is deemed a foul. It’s not competitive enough. The old reserve system gave them the chance to play against hardened professionals in a more competitive and physical environment. It was a halfway house between youth football and full first team football.

Sorry, I meant limited by our approach to it rather than limited by the over age rules of the competition itself (which, given Bryan is still 23, don’t apply anyway for him yet).

Restore the Pontins League.

Who usually plays LCB?

As Phil Rose has said we have played 40 different players in our U23s this season, the whole thing is a mish mash.

Belehouan has played there, but played right centre half on Monday.
Ashton Hall played left centre back Monday, but is usually central.

Right wing back Sheppeard played left wing back first half, right wing back second half.

One home win all season says it all about the U23s this season.

Who manages the 23's is it that fella that could not hack it at Chesterfield.

Andrew Hughes ex Leeds and Reading player.
Jack Lester is in charge of the whole thing, effectively replacing Travis Binnion.
I was doing some research for one of my books yesterday. In October 2015, Andrew Hughes was a 37 year old over age Sub for Bolton Wanderers U21 against Sheffield United U21 in The Premier League Cup. He was Bolton Academy manager at the time & had kept his playing registration. The Carrier Bag Firm are looking this shit up so that no one else has to.....

Actually saw him play in a couple of pre season friendlies and thought he looked calm, composed and comfortable on the ball.
I'm sure there's a player in there somewhere - a loan may well be the best option to discover how good a player he is.

You Sir, are a subscriber to the “He’ll come good eventually” club.

And one day you’ll be right! 👍

But not on this occasion. 😉

Is it possible to report a crime before it happens?

Because if we are really about to get 750k for the lad whose been more famous for his paternity leave than anything on the pitch, then that's daylight robbery!

It’s an O’Rourke piece, so comes with my standard “it’s O’Rourke” warning. I think anything totalling that fee would surely be add-on related. His most memorable appearance for the club was in the promotion celebrations last season, sparking such questions as “Who is the guy with the dreads?”, “Is that Kean Bryan?” and “What’s he still doing here?”

With J-Robs signed, and on a contract till 2022, we’re clearly looking to move Bryan on permanently. If he gets a Championship club that has the intention of playing him he’ll have done extremely well.

Seemingly a positional swap for Robinson and not costing any money which explains the willingness to spend £500k on Robinson when in only his last 6 months of contract

Forest had an option of an extra year on Robinson mate (which they were going to exercise), that is why the fee is what it is.
Eriksen has only six months on his contract but Inter are still prepared to pay £11m for him. £500k for a player we think is good enough for the PL, even if it’s just back-up, is peanuts.

Think he might have hung out and gone for the big signing on fee on a pre-sign but I think the Spurs fans gave him alot of stick in their game in the week may have influenced him otherwise. That and he has tripled his wages.

Yes, but my point was that a player may still have a value to another club even if he’s only got 6 months on his contract.
Apparently Spurs are hanging on for £17m. Levy playing his who blinks first game. If I was at Inter, I’d give him three days to accept the offer or it’s off the table and I’d be making very public enquiries over the availability of Ceballos from Madrid as he’s not getting games for Arsenal whist opening discussions with Eriksen for a pre-contract to sign him in the summer for nowt.

Right, I've started the car. Where am I driving him to?

Tough one that, because Charlton and Huddersfield are in different directions. Tell you what, drop him off at Woodhall Services and let him walk from there. The exercise will do him good!

I think it makes an even bigger statement about "development squad" football. It's almost a total irrelevance. It's not a serious competition and it is not a good measure of whether a player is capable of playing competitive football in the first team. Surely clubs (and fans) can see this? I will repeat again that I think it would be best for everyone if we went back to a proper "reserves" team and a competitive "reserves" league, like the old "Central League" was.

I used to enjoy watching United's "second-string" because many of them were on the brink of the first team, or had played in the first team and it gave a fascinating insight into our squad depth and quality. It was also great to see a proper league table and compare how our reserves were doing versus other major clubs.

It also meant the players were getting competitive games every week - so they were more ready to step into first team action.

I've not heard a good argument against it really - and I don't know why it ever stopped being a thing? Money no doubt had something to do with it?

Back to the main topic then and Kean Bryan. I hope the Manchester City fan who vigorously defended Bryan on here is reading this.

I am delighted that it looks like we are getting shut of him. He has offered zero in all the time he's been here. A long malingering injury marked his arrival, followed by the occasional, totally unconvincing appearance, in our second string. As others have said, he made a bigger impression with his paternity leave and promotion celebrations than his football. He was also a bit of a beau on the fashion front. A "fashionista" no doubt. That just makes it even harder to stomach tbh. We brought him in to be famous for his football, not his "Hello" magazine shoots.

Sometimes there are players who look a bit rough around the edges, but develop progressively into good players. I can fully understand folks having faith in such players and feeling that they may come good eventually. But I'm afraid Bryan doesn't come into that category at all. There is nothing, and I mean nothing, about any of his performances for us that you could look at and say...."Hmm" he looks like he might offer something". Those who are saying otherwise are just trying to be the first to predict something for their own vanity, not because there is any evidence to support it whatsoever.

Hesitant, slow, ponderous, indecisive, reluctant to go forwards with the ball, poor positionally...and those are just his strengths!

The phrase, "stealing a living" is not one I use lightly, but in this case it seems to fit quite well. Now he's got a chance to go and earn one for a change. I expect he'll choose Huddersfield over Charlton as it's handier for his Manchester roots and thriving hip-hop scene.

And if we get £750k in the bank for him, it will be

So the general consensus is that we don’t want to keep this young player?

For me, he’s another example of a lad clinging onto the kudos of a club rather than thinking about his football and sticking the graft in.

No doubt he has earned good money up to now, but his next contract is crucial because if he’s not playing in that period, wherever that is, then he could be in the lower reaches by 25/26 and having hardly kicked a ball as a pro!
He could have declined Man City contracts....could have sought first team football lower down in leagues 1 and 2 as a teenager and developed by playing the game rather than hanging about the academy and playing the odd 23s game
But I suspect saying you play for Rochdale or Morecambe doesn’t get you the soap star girlfriend!!

No sympathy for the lad. Needs to put football first otherwise there will be no football at all.
