Always impressed me when playing against us and in the clips I saw of him.
Preseason confirmed my thoughts of a player who was skilful, intelligent and pacey.
Hits the premiership and it’s like a brick wall, first touch dire, seemingly lost his pace and more importantly not making the runs to either receive the ball in space or to stretch the opposition defence.

Yesterday was a perfect opportunity for him to step up to the plate against inferior opposition, but he failed to stand out.

Is it confidence, an inability for him to understand our system or lack of desire?

I think he is a bit overawed by the move to a bigger club in the premiership, where he expected to carry on his previous good form yet found defenders better and things therefore not coming off for him. Think he has subsequently lost his confidence.
Wilder keeps saying that he is one for the future but the only way he will improve is with confidence which he can only achieve with games. The ridiculous situation of having no competitive reserve fixtures means the only thing to do is send him out on loan; this will weaken the squad unless we Bring another in.
If Wilder likes besic he may have to sign him on a permanent to enable him to bring a young premiership striker in on loan, look abroad for an established loan or player coming to the end of his contract or look for a young developing talent for £2-3 million from the EFL.
Interesting times but I can definitely see him going out on loan.

Needs to go on loan and get back to doing what he's capable of.

If we need a replacement there's been no shortage of foreign links and a loan from abroad is allowed in addition to 2 domestic loans.

Balls down the channels are his strength. How many of these did we see? incidentally I didn't appreciate who good the goal was until I saw it on the TV. Great skill.

I haven't seen anything. With struggling players you can usually see their best attributes, but they just struggle to utilise them for one reason or another. With Robinson, he looks slow, weak on the ball, an average finisher and just plain lethargic. I've not seen any spark whatsoever. I couldn't tell you what his game is.

Desperately hope I'm completely wrong and he suddenly comes good, but it doesn't look like happening this season.

Remind me, who set the equaliser up at Chelsea and who set the equaliser up against Man U. He's young, struggling for consistency, but stick with him for the future he will develop.

Against Chelsea he played well, but gone off the boil since

It's not Robinson's fault. He's a winger in a team that doesn't use wingers and he's been asked to become a striker whilst making the step up a division.

He'd be better going out on loan, playing as striker in the Championship to build his confidence in that role, then come back to have a go again. The risk there is that he goes out on loan and the manager of that team just uses him as a winger, as it's his best role.

Agree. Question being why did we sign him in the first place knowing he's a winger and we don't play with wingers?

Robinson is great on the ball but he is a physical coward and avoids contact all the time.

This makes him a problem, as he never presses properly. He runs towards people but stops and never affects their progress.

His problem, therefore, is attitude rather than ability. Sterling was like that early in his career, so it may be something that conditioning/bulking with Prestridge and mental strengthening with Tufty can improve.

His touches for McB’s goal v Manure and a couple yesterday were outstanding, so let’s hope that Wilder has enough patience and Callum has the desire to improve.

He seems incredibly half-hearted like he doesn't care. I'm sure he does but I find it incredibly strange. He seems to avoid contact at all costs.

This is the thing, he naturaly drifts wide. I said it when we signed him he would struggle to fit in with our system as he's naturally a wide forward and it seems he can't adapt, not yet anyway. Same for Ollie Watkins, he's not an out and out striker more of a wide forward.

Our system is pretty unique and we should only sign players that fit that model.

It's a good question and one I struggle to understand the reasoning behind. Perhaps Wilder saw a natural striker in there that he wanted to coach and develop?

In any case - I don't think he should be given a hard time for struggling to adapt to a playing a new team, playing a different position and at a higher standard. The problem I see is the lack of application or desire. He reminds me of Lee Evans who had clear quality with the ball but seemed to prefer to play safe and drift out of the games he played.

At a guess he signed him for his pace, which he now seems to have lost. We went into the summer with only Clarke, Didsy and Sharp on the books, none of which are what you'd call speedy. Robinson scored 12 in 27 league appearances last season, so Wilder probably thought he could convert him and end up with a pacey striker up front.

Which he might do yet

Interesting one that. Pre season he looked rapid and tricky, albeit against weaker opposition. Looks anything but now. His confidence has probably been affected but not sure how that impacts on his speed.

Agreed, I was talking to a PNE fan today about Robinson and he said his best attribute was his sublime crossing, as we saw against Man Utd. I did wonder at the time why we signed him when we don't play wingers?

Aye, he has done those things, but generally he does next to nothing.

Hope so.

Did he actually touch the ball when he came on last night?
Yes. He actually dispossessed a Man City player in the right corner (with the help of Baldock), stopped their attack and set off a counter. Probably had some other touches but that’s the one I distinctly remember.

In fairness to Robinson, I got excited when I saw the attacking substitutions but City kept the ball supremely well after their goal. The last minute free kick aside, the whole team did nothing for the final quarter.
