I'm happy he's been training with us for 1 month. That bodes well. Wilder was also asked on his spell at Sunderland where he angered fans but also dismissed this and said two sides to every story.

I think this could work well for us, still only 28.

WHY RODWELL?
Chris Wilder has been speaking about why he’s decided to offer Jack Rodwell a contract at Sheffield United.
“Hopefully we can kickstart his career,” he said.
“He’s certainly got the desire from a physical point of view. No issues from an attitude point of view. I think there might be a club up in the north east – their supporters will chuck a load of stuff at Jack Rodwell. There’s two parts to that story by the way. I’m not a lover of fly-on-the-wall documentaries, I think they’re always looking for a villain.
“But from my point of view that’s history, and all the boxes that I needed to tick, and Jack needed to tick he has done.
“He plays a number of positions, and hopefully we can get him going and Jack can get himself going. So, I should imagine that will get done this morning.”

"Jack Rodwell". That's a proper footballer's name. None of your la-di-da hyphens or fancy foreigners. ;-)

Like Morrison, he could turn out to be anything from a hidden gem and bargain of the year through to a waste of a place in the squad.

CW obviously loves the challenge of turning around players' careers when they're on the wane (see Clarke, Mousset, Duffy, Morrison and several others). Not all work out but he does have a fairly incredible success rate.

I just hope Rodwell's signing is seen as an opportunity too good to turn down rather than an indication of the budget available to him.

wow, i thought we had moved on from this kind of signing!

It is a gamble much like Morrison glad its only a short term deal.

i get it, and i hope he does well, but really ! Is this our kind of target?

We haven't got the budget to sign a team full of £10m+ signings, so we're always going to have to take the odd gamble. Most won't come off, but if they do it'll be a masterstroke.

Proven at this level, more so than our other experimental signing of Morrison which has been a bit of a let down where it seems that he can't put any roots down anywhere and really knuckle down.
Rodwell wouldn't be in the mess he's in if he hadn't signed such a huge contract at Sunderland and got trapped in a basket case of a club. Having said that if there was genuine demand for him, someone would have taken him long ago. At his best, he should walk into our team, just a case of getting that out of him

Wilder has often said we identify different types of targets....based on value for money and what they offer now but also in the future.

Obviously Rodwell isn‘t a major signing....he’s just a low risk punt, like Morrison was.....might work...might not.

Well that's one in......

I'm saying next one in is the loan from abroad
Then if any players leave we will then have money to spend but that will depend on who we'll sell first

Are you saying that any of the players who may "leave" could be BIG players, currently in the 1st team/squad?

Realistically we are going to get peanuts for our fringe/out-of-squad players (in Premier League terms) .If so, then that would say to me that there is very little money available to push on?

I’m more confident of this working than Morrison. He was a good player at Everton but it didn’t quite work out at Man City, these things happen. His mistake was going to a car crash club to revive his career. We’ve had him for a month and he’s already known to Jags, I’m pretty sure if he was a dickhead Jags would have told CW or we’d have found out by now after a month.
We haven’t actually received loads more money than the other PL clubs, they’ll all get £100m+ too so whilst we’re richer than we’ve ever been, we’re still relatively poor. Every other club bar Villa and Norwich have had previous years’ money to invest in their players. We have to keep doing what we’ve been doing, looking for good value signings. We don’t want to go all ‘Stoke’ and think we’re bigger than we are, nor can we afford to right now.

Just confirmed on TalkSport

There are a couple of ways of looking at this.

Why hasn’t he had a club? Well could be either “values himself higher than the teams who looked to sign him” or “simply
Nobody came in for him or offered a deal”

We will never know I suppose, and it seems odd that a lad who featured a fair bit for Blackburn last season ended up leaving and not having a club for 6 months. If it’s the first option then not taking deals offered suggests he might know his worth and was waiting for the right chance to get himself back into the game at a level he believed he should be. I certainly hope it was never about money!!

Just surprised no championship clubs fancied taking him on, I mean the pigs for one who are a squad full of shite would have been just the sort of team who’d take on the wages with zero initial outlay.

But I will be keen to see what he can do, though dare I say he’s here as back up to the first team at the moment.

Signing Ravel Morrison was a bit of a dumb move...

If we were pinning our seasons hopes on Ravel or Rodwell...then agree they were dumb moves because many people think both moves were likely to fail.......
pre season comments from fans of other clubs said “if Sheff Utd are pinning their hopes on Ravel Morrison and Phil Jagielka then they will struggle”.

At the time I remember thinking it’s unlikely that either will even play...they were both low risk back up players.

Its the same with Rodwell....Wilders expectations are probably low for him....but there’a chance he could become a top PL player again.
He won’t be costing much....so it’s a worth while gamble....we’re not exactly pinning our hopes on him....if he delivers it’s a bonus.
