The only reason I could see loan to buy being used was if we had no money now but would have in summer. It makes no sense otherwise. I can't see teams doing business with us if we want to insert a relegation clause.

I also can;t see us buying another striker unless it's someone for the future. We currently have 5 on the books (plus Leon)

I agree. Realistically we have 2 strikers - Moose and OliMc. Sharp and Clarke are bit part players at best now (Clarke being more or less out of the picture) and Didz is essentially a link player, not a striker in the real sense of the word.

We are light up front. But of course, ready made strikers cost big money! I think we will be ok points wise to go with what we have this season, but we need to plan and prepare for next - which will be in the premier league! One or two shit off a shovel young lower league or foreign strikers showing plenty of potential would do for me. Chuck maybe £6-8m at it. Give them time to get used to our way of playing then ramp up in pre-season and see if they are up to it.

Well I'll tell you what I did do in my working life ............................Be happy working hard and enjoying a quality and comfortable working environment on a salary that reflected this.

There is much more to life than pound notes, but I do acknowledge that of course financial and future security is important. I don't think it's a case of 'pushing the boat out'; we should now be in the position as a club to compete wages wise with lower end prem teams. More importantly, if we want to remain in the prem for the foreseeable future, then we have to do this.

I know what you mean - but football is their livelihood and its a much shorter career than most.

It's only natural that the average footballer wants to maximise their income, just as much as any other average person in any walk of life.

I think the general idea of securing your family’s future is that your kids grow up in a nice area and are privately educated at a good school so they can get good jobs and ensure that them, their kids and grandkids have a much better life than you or your parents had when growing up.

A man in their position can realistically think about leaving behind money so that even their Grandchildren can be comfortable. Not bad for such a short career.

In the same position as Lunny, I would look after the bank balance & back myself elsewhere if the money was a significant increase from anything we can offer. It would be a big shame to lose him, but as Wilder said - you can't look the lad in the eye & tell him he'd be better off here when the numbers start moving too far apart.

There’s also an argument for staying though. He fits in here, he’s probably going to continue to do well and, if he does, he’ll get a big offer. Another season playing like he is and top six clubs will be looking at him.
There’s a risk going to another club - he might take a while to settle in, that could set him back a year. Or worse, he might never settle, some transfers just don’t work out.
So, does he play the long game, stay with us and hope for a big move in 18 months it does he grab the bird in the hand and move to the highest bidder now?

It’s a difficult decision. In the old days, you took the money because your career could be quickly ended by injury. I’m not sure that’s the case now, most injuries are treatable. If I was advising him, providing we offer him a decent contract, I’d say take it and continue to develop under CWAK.

True but the difference could be between £30k and £60k. You’d have to think very carefully before turning down the opportunity to double your wages, however much you’re on.
I’d be very surprised if he turned down £30k from us to take £40k from a similar sized club to us.

Not necessarily. He's a free agent. He may have just been offered 40k a week to go & play somewhere else. He'd be foolish not to at least use his contractual position as leverage to get the best possible deal for him & his family.

No one really knows what happened at Sunderland in the time leading up to all this. He may have been poorly treated at the club and be bitter, he may have been aware of other players on similar money that received good payoffs. These documentaries are heavily edited to form narratives. I’d trust Wilder’s judgement on this.

They offered him a deal then wanted rid but didn't want to pay him to leave. Ridiculous people on this forum who act like they'd give a shit about their multi multi million pound company if they did the same to them in any job knowing you're not going to get close to the same money again.

That makes zero sense. Why would a club allow us to loan to buy cheaper than they could sell a player for? We're in the top division now. Why would a team take less in summer than in January? If the loan is just covering the wages then surely they'd prefer the money now?

Oh he is. But we still have 5 strikers. I imagine he'll leave in summer, but then we'll have 4.

Rodwell might be offered a six month deal with an option for us to extend it. Then we're not committed to him long term. If he wants a better deal then he'll need to knuckle down and force his way into the reckoning.
