3 midfielders is overkill in that area.

A quick look at the League Table and particularly the goals scored column should focus Wilder's mind.
We need at least one more striker who can score some goals...
If Mousset gets injured we will struggle big style to convert and slip down the table.
Huge risk in the goalie position as well. Think we could gain points at Man U if we upgrade on Simon Moore, albeit harsh on a decent lad etc
That makes sense, I don’t think we’re far off really and it’s interesting that when he’s talked before he’s said we’re light in a couple of positions, so perhaps we’re after back up rather than immediate first teamers.
Very sensible approach as ever to evolve the Squad rather than replace. Bringing a couple in now really strengthens the depth of the squad.
Never seen Holgate do much to impress - or it could be me that hasn't seen enough of him.
Who would he be cover for?
Perhaps he wont be here for backup. It might be for real competition and when he gets in he might make a position his own.Right side of defence, Bash and Baldock.
He's alright, plenty of attacking threat but I imagine he'll be expensive, he's from Donny though so if he wants to live closer to family that's something.
Personally can't see it, unless Ancelotti comes in and immediately tells him to fuck off, why would he come to us where he'd be backup?
For the same reason we signed players like Cranie and Dowell last season. Not as good as Basham or Duffy, but still made huge contributions when the first choice were unavailable and were better than the back-ups we had previously. Football is a squad game and we will need them over the course of a season. (Especially for our Europa League campaign next yearAlthough I see your point in this post, I've never understood the 'sign players for back up' mentality.
Why would you spend money on a player that isn't as good as the one you already have?
I've never understood that.
I think it could be very important if we get a few injuries to the first XIIt could well be the least important transfer window in recent times.

Just listened to this on RS clipsJust picking up on some official SUFC stuff on Twitter from CW.
"...we’re looking at a couple of signings around 2 or 3 to help us after January. We need to be strong, have cover and some competition within the squad...”
"...We’re in fantastic shape, really good. We make it competitive in training from Monday to Friday. It’s brilliant when they all come through unscathed. We’ve lost John (Fleck) through suspension but we have some brilliant cover to come in ..."
So it's still 2 or 3 to come in, interesting times!

Saying that these new players are for back as we're light in a few areas may just be kidology for the first team players' benefit![]()
If Lunny has any sense he'll be signing a 3 year dealLunny might as well go for it if he’s leaving in January anyway

looking at our summer signings how many were signed as backup versus signed to fight for a 1st team slotPerhaps he wont be here for backup. It might be for real competition and when he gets in he might make a position his own.

financially I agree but a lot of these players need to think about their role in the system and how that works for themNot necessarily. He's a free agent. He may have just been offered 40k a week to go & play somewhere else. He'd be foolish not to at least use his contractual position as leverage to get the best possible deal for him & his family.
