Just picking up on some official SUFC stuff on Twitter from CW.


"...we’re looking at a couple of signings around 2 or 3 to help us after January. We need to be strong, have cover and some competition within the squad...”

"...We’re in fantastic shape, really good. We make it competitive in training from Monday to Friday. It’s brilliant when they all come through unscathed. We’ve lost John (Fleck) through suspension but we have some brilliant cover to come in ..."

So it's still 2 or 3 to come in, interesting times!

That makes sense, I don’t think we’re far off really and it’s interesting that when he’s talked before he’s said we’re light in a couple of positions, so perhaps we’re after back up rather than immediate first teamers.

Very sensible approach as ever to evolve the Squad rather than replace. Bringing a couple in now really strengthens the depth of the squad.
 
Another one from the gaffer, nice to see we won't be shying away from a crunching tackle this weekend!

Agreed. By the time Osborn, Freeman and Morrison get regular starts, they will slot comfortably into a system they know and understand. :)

It’s almost like having new players, it seems that it takes a lot for anyone to come in and dislodge the regulars. Baldock has done that with Kieran Freeman and thrived.

I think apart from the strikers, which we will probably always rotate, other positions are much more difficult to get into.

  • Still in contract talks with a few players including John Lundstram. Wilder then started making a point about not wanting to jump from (I'm paraphrasing) one wage structure to another. Implication was that player(s) - be it Lundstram or others - are asking for more than we'd like to pay. Wilder then said we could get into a situation like with Brooks where we can't give them what they want, and then we have to see how much we can get for them instead from another team. This was all very hypothetical but reading between the lines you can probably draw some conclusions about contract discussions not being as easy as they'd like.
  • Said the "two or three signings" in Jan wouldn't all be permanents, probably a mix. I know we currently have two PL loans, so not sure what that means. Doesn't seem like there's a chance of Besic returning so perhaps Henderson is happening? Wilder specifically mentioned loan to buy as an option, but I don't think that'd get us around the rule.
  • Key targets for strengthening are depth / competition for JOC and Basham. Wilder said Kean Bryan needs first-team football and so will probably go out on loan. Wilder was asked specifically about Mason Holgate and was coy. I'm pretty sure we're interested. Said something could happen in midfield, you never know, but didn't bring up anything about new forwards. I reckon we're keen on Watkins, but we'll see what happens. I don't think there's a need to chase it if Brentford are asking too much, particularly with McBurnie coming on a fair bit in the past few weeks. I think it's fair to say we've got three good striking options now, rather than two, which is an improvement on how it looked six weeks ago.
  • Morrison's name wasn't mentioned when he was calling out our midfield options.

Again, agreed, we just need to learn a bit of patience with the new players. Most will come good eventually.

I think apart from the ones that we’ve left behind (Holmes, carruthers etc) we’ve not done badly. Patience is key as you say.

As many people continue to say, nobody else plays the way we do so players need time to learn the way we play and get fitter/ stronger

Lunny might as well go for it if he’s leaving in January anyway
 
Can see us buying Besic, he's got 18 months on his Everton contract and they're probably not going to give him a new one. Maybe a deal can be done and we can free up a loan spot.

Can't see us getting Holgate though, if Big Dunc is staying on as a coach if Ancelotti goes there, he'll at least be given a chance you'd imagine in an Ancelotti team.

The only reason I could see loan to buy being used was if we had no money now but would have in summer. It makes no sense otherwise. I can't see teams doing business with us if we want to insert a relegation clause.

I also can;t see us buying another striker unless it's someone for the future. We currently have 5 on the books (plus Leon)
 
I really, really hope Rodwell isn't one - The guys a lazy prick. Other than that I'm not worried about what we do.
 
Why would we loan a midfielder (probably our strongest position and least in need of reinforcement) from a dogshit Stoke team?
 



Please not Rodwell. Anyone watch the Sunderland till I die series would see he didn't give a shit about the plight the club was in but was still on Premier league wages.
